Simplifying and Designing Logic Circuits

4 Using SOP and POS

I. OBJECTIVES: At the end of this activity the student should be able:

Know the basic concepts of Sum Of Products (SOP) and Product Of Sum (POS) rules.

II. Parts
III. Basic Theory
IV. Procedure
V. Results and Answers to Questions

Circuit Diagram

Using Multisim simulation software, simulate the circuit shown below. Show every output
for every different input. (Copy and paste results.)
Implement the figures below on the breadboard:

Figure 4.1

1. Derive the truth table of the given combinational logic circuits.

2. Simplify the given combinational logic circuit using Boolean algebra rules and postulates.
What is the simplified Boolean expression? Show your solution on an extra sheet of paper.

Simplified Equation:

Simplified Circuit:

ECE 4104 Logic Circuits and Switching Theory Laboratory Activity No. 4

3. Connect the circuit of the simplified expression and derive its truth table.

Truth Table:

4. Are the table of original circuit and simplified circuit equal? ____________

5. Design a logic circuit that will allow input signal A to pass through to the output only when
control input B is low while control input C is high; otherwise the output is low. Draw its logic
circuit (assign it as figure 4.2). Show Simulation.
6. Implement in the logic trainer the actual circuit of figure 4.2 using POS rule and derive the truth
table from the actual circuit (show POS equation, circuit and truth table on an extra sheet of
paper)
7. Derive the truth table theoretically using SOP rule

Truth Table:

8. Compare theoretical table and actual truth table

9. Do they produce equal result? ________

QUESTIONS

1. What do you think is the advantage of using SOP from POS and vice versa?
2. Which among the SOP and POS would you find easy to use in simplifying logic circuits? Why?

VI. Observation

VII. Conclusion

VIII. Design

Design the simplest relay circuit possible (i.e. having the fewest contacts) to implement the
following truth table:
