HyperTerminal in Windows 7 or Vista

HyperTerminal is no longer part of the Windows operating system after Windows XP. However you can
copy the relevant HyperTerminal files from Windows XP to your Windows 7 or Vista.

Required:

Windows XP system
USB flash drive

Heres the trick:

1. Go to C:\Program Files\Windows NT\ and copy hypertrm.exe and htrn_jis.dll to your USB flash
drive.
2. Go to C:\Windows\System32\ and copy hticons.dll and hypertrm.dll to your USB flash drive.
3. If you want the help files, go to C:\Windows\Help\ and copy hypertrm.chm and hypertrm.hlp
to your USB flash drive.
4. Create a folder C:\Program Files\HyperTerminal\ for Windows 7 (32-bit) or Vista or C:\Program
Files (x86)\HyperTerminal\ for Windows 7 (64-bit) and copy the above files to it.
5. Create a shortcut to hypertrm.exe and put it on your desktop. If you want to have
HyperTerminal on your Start Menu just create a shortcut to hypertrm.exe and put it in
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\ and when you go to All Programs
under the Start Menu HyperTerminal will be there.
6. Open the shortcut to launch the HyperTerminal program.

What each file does.

hypertrm.exe is the application
hypertrm.dll is a required dll file for hypertrm to run
hticons.dll is the icons
htrn_jis.dll is the internal decoding library (RAW) for protocols
hypertrm.chm is compiled HTML help file
hypertrm.hlp is Windows help file

To get double click on an ht icon shortcut to your connection to work:

1. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
2. In the Command Prompt window, type regedit and navigate to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\hypertrm.exe\shell\open\command
3. Double click the Default value and remove the quotation marks enclosing %1,
"C:\Program Files (x86)\HyperTerminal\hypertrm.exe" %1
4. Click OK and navigate to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ht_auto_file\shell\open\command
5. Double click the Default value and remove the quotation marks enclosing %1,
"C:\Program Files (x86)\HyperTerminal\hypertrm.exe" %1
6. Click OK and close the Registry Editor.
7. Type exit to close the Command Prompt.
Note: If you are not comfortable editing registry keys, then each time you launch HyperTerminal click
File > Open to select an .ht session file.
