Islamist extremists killed at least 17 people after opening fire Sunday on a restaurant popular
with foreigners in the Burkina Faso capital of Ouagadougou. There was no immediate claim of
responsibility for the violence. Monday morning, security forces were still exchanging heavy fire
with attackers who were believed to be holding hostages on the first and second floors of the up-
market Aziz Istanbul restaurant. Remi Dandjinou, the countrys communications minister, told
journalists it was a terror attack. Burkina Fasso in western Africa borders on Mali and Niger.
