1. Overview
The D-IO 55 ionization flame scanner is suitable for monitoring the flames of gas and oil driven
burners or igniters with a built-in ionization electrode. The D-IO 55-10 and D-IO 55-11 control units are
designed for intermittent operation and the D-IO 55-20 as well as D-IO 55-21 for continuous operation.
The housing fits on a standardized DIN rail for mounting to EN 50022 standards and can be fit into all
boxes.
If a single shared electrode is present in the burner for both ignition and ionization flame scanner, this
can be used with the D-HG 55 ignition transformer of DURAG or AF 800 T 51 ignition transformer of
Hegwein.

2. Operation

Together, the ionization electrode and the D-IO 55 control unit form a flame monitoring system. The
flame scanner utilizes on the ionization principle and the rectifying effect of the flame.

If a flame develops between the ionization electrode and the ground potential, this gap is ionized.
Through the alternating current in the D-IO 55 control unit, which is switched against the ground
potential, a current flows over this ionization path with a rectifying effect. This rectifying current
(ionization current) is amplified in the control unit and turns on the flame relay when a certain
threshold is reached. A green LED indicates the presence of the flame on the D-IO 55.

3. Installation
The installation of the ionization flame scanner follows the guidelines for the D-IO 55 control unit. The
electrical installation should follow all local requirements (for example VDE specifications) and the
D-IO 55 connection diagram. The housing can be mounted on a standard DIN TS 35 rail according to
EN 50022.
The enclosure rating of the D-IO 55 control unit complies with IP20. Once installed, the protection
class must reach at least IP40 (IP54 for outdoor sites).
A special shielded cable (part no.: DURAG KleZ912F0, HEGWEIN Z 912 F0) should be used to
connect the ionization electrode to the control unit inputs (terminals 6 and 7). This permits up to
150 m between the control unit and the ionization electrode. The cables shield must be isolated from
the ground potential and protected against unwanted contact (shielding current is approximately
120 Vac).

! When connecting the ionization flame scanner, all local regulations must be observed!

The internal resistance of the ionization electrode must carry several M. This is achieved by properly
insulating the electrode (ceramic insulators) and professionally connecting the cable. In dusty or damp
combustion environments, the internal resistance of the ionization electrode may diminish and
generate an error message (loss of the Flame ON signal) in the flame scanner. If this occurs the
insulators must be cleaned and dried.
Page 2 D-IO 55

To do a control check of the ionization current, there is a 0-50 A current output on the control unit.
This output is not intended for a continuous ionization current display, but aids in adjustments on the
burner or igniter!

If leakage spray or soapsuds are used for installation or maintenance near the ionization
! electrode or the connecting cable to the control unit, these may cause a simulated
ionization current and cause an inaccurate reading.

3.1. Start-up

If the control unit is properly mounted and wired according to the dimensional diagrams and the
connection plan, the flame scanner unit is ready for immediate operation when power is supplied.

Note:

The D-IO 55 is a certified device. Any modifications will result in loss of certification. Only the
manufacturer or its authorized representatives may make repairs. Only they can determine whether a
unit has been repaired and will function properly.

4. Safety Time

The safety time is the response time of the flame scanner to a flame signal outage (ionization current)
and the resulting shut-off of the relay contact for the Flame ON signal. The D-IO 55 control unit has a
standard safety time of 1 second. Safety times of 3 seconds (D-IO 55-10/3; D-IO 55-10/3;
D-IO 55-20/3; D-IO 55-21/3) and 5 seconds (D-IO 55-10/5; D-IO 55-11/5; D-IO 55-20/5;
D-IO 55-21/5) are also available. The safety time can only be adjusted by the manufacturer.

5. Flame Recognition Threshold

The D-IO 55 control unit has a set flame recognition threshold for the Flame ON signal. The Flame ON
signal depends on the level of the ionization current (min. 5 A). The ionization electrode must
therefore be located within the combustion zone of the flame. If the flame has moved further out and
the ionization electrode is located only in the fuel stream, no Flame ON signal will be detected.
