Symptom

You are looking for documentation on the Hardware Configuration Check Tool (HWCCT) that covers:

Download & installation
Usage
Examples & best practises

Other Terms

HANA, storage, hardware configuration check tool, hwcct, documentation, distributed system

Reason and Prerequisites

The Hardware Configuration Check Tool provides tests and reports for single host and scale out systems to
determine if the hardware you intend to use meets the minimum performance criteria required to run SAP
HANA in production use. SAP strongly recommends to use HWCCT to check the hardware infrastructure
setup according to the SAP HANA Tailored Data Center Integration (TDI) approach.

HWCCT provides the following checks:

Validation of hardware setup such as memory configuration (DIMM population rules) or core/memory
ratio
Validation of operating system settings such as Linux kernel settings (e.g. transparent huge pages
configuration) and supported Linux distributions
Measurment of data throughput rates and latency times between the SAP HANA computing nodes and
the external storage system
Measurment of the minimum bandwidth of the intra-node network i.e. the bandwidth available between
the SAP HANA computing nodes which comprise a multi-node system
[PowerPC only] Check of LPAR settings

Solution

To learn about download, installation & usage of HWCCT, see the attached document
"SAP_HANA_Hardware_Configuration_Check_Tool_<version>.pdf".
Check the attached configuration file templates (JSON files) for a quick start
Details on SAP HANA TDI are available at http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-59755

0 (SLES) or HANA-HWC-AP RH 1. HWCCT cannot be used to check data throughput and latency .0 HANA-HWC-ES 1.1 must use HWCCT of SAP HANA SPS10 or higher or a related SAP HANA revision In order to find out which version of HWCCT had been used for the certification of your storage system do the following: All hardware certified for SAP HANA (compute servers and storage) is listed at https://global. The following values are possible for certification scenarios: Appliance for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES): HANA-HWC-AP SU 1.0 (RHEL). under "Restrictions & Comments" you find the version of the certification scenario.sap. click the "View Listings" button -> the list of certified appliances (compute servers) appears -> click the tab "Certified Enterprise Storage" -> the list of certified storages appears Find your storage system in that list and click on the link to display its details -> a popup appears In the popup.1 must use HWCCT of SAP HANA SPS10 or higher or a related SAP HANA revision In order to find out which version of HWCCT must be used for checking SAP HANA TDI infrastructures set up with entry-level compute servers based on Intel Xeon E5 CPUs do the following: .1 or HANA-HWC-AP RH 1. The following values are possible for certification scenarios: HANA-HWC-ES 1.0 or HANA-HWC-AP RH 1.sap.1 Appliance for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL): HANA-HWC-AP RH 1.com/community/ebook/2014-09-02-hana-hardware/enEN/index.html. All HWCCT tests of appliances (compute servers) certified with scenarioHANA-HWC-AP SU 1. click the "View Listings" button -> the list of certified appliances (compute servers) appears Find your compute server in that list and click on the link to display its details -> a popup appears In the popup.1 Notes: If the version of the certification scenario is missing. On that page. several versions of HWCCT were published If you want to check whether your TDI infrastructure meets SAP's KPIs. under "Restrictions & Comments" you find the version of the certification scenario.html.see http://service. it is crucial that for your tests you use the same version of HWCCT which had been used during the certification of the hardware (compute server and storage system) by the hardware vendor In order to find out which version of HWCCT had been used for the certification of your appliance (compute server based on Intel Xeon E7 CPUs).1 All HWCCT tests of storage systems certified with scenario HANA-HWC-ES 1.0 must use HWCCT of SAP HANA SPS08 or SAP HANA SPS09 or a related SAP HANA revision All HWCCT tests of appliances (compute servers) certified with scenarioHANA-HWC-AP SU 1.0 or HANA-HWC-AP RH 1.com/community/ebook/2014-09-02-hana-hardware/enEN/index. it equals to HANA-HWC-AP SU 1.Which version of HWCCT must I use to check the hardware of my SAP HANA Tailored Data Center Integration (TDI) infrastructure? Since the release of TDI in November 2013.sap.0 or HANA-HWC-AP SU 1. do the following: All hardware certified for SAP HANA (compute servers and storage) is listed at https://global.com/sap/support/notes/2187426. For legacy appliances released prior to 2014 (= compute servers based on Intel Nehalem EX or Intel Westmere EX CPUs). On that page.0 must use HWCCT of SAP HANA SPS08 or SAP HANA SPS09 or a related SAP HANA revision All HWCCT tests of storage systems certified with scenario HANA-HWC-ES 1.

0 and storage certified with HANA-HWC-ES 1.1 => use HWCCT of SAP HANA SPS10 or higher or a related SAP HANA revision Compute server of a legacy appliance which had been released before 2014 (i. the version of HWCCT to be used depends on the release date of the E5-based compute server: All HWCCT tests of E5-based compute servers with internal disks released before July 14 2015 must use HWCCT of SAP HANA SPS08 or SAP HANA SPS09 or a related SAP HANA revision All HWCCT tests of E5-based compute servers with internal disks released after July 14 2015 must use HWCCT of SAP HANA SPS10 or higher or a related SAP HANA revision If your TDI infrastructure contains a compute server which has been certified with a different version of HWCCT than the storage. Therefore.e.0 => use HWCCT of SAP HANA SPS08/09 or a related SAP HANA revision This document refers to SAP Note/KBA Title 2187426 SAP HANA: Validation of Westmere based Hardware 2175754 SAP HANA SPS 10 Database Revision 100 2009879 SAP HANA Guidelines for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Operating System 1944799 SAP HANA Guidelines for SLES Operating System Installation 1930979 Alert: Sync/Async read ratio 1514967 SAP HANA: Central Note This document is referenced by SAP Note/KBA Title 2055470 HANA on POWER Planning and Installation Specifics . If the infrastructure uses internal disks.sap. Entry-level compute servers based on Intel Xeon E5 CPUs are not certified the same way as compute servers based on Intel Xeon E7 CPUs.1 and storage certified with HANA-HWC-ES 1. if the infrastructure uses external storage.Central Note .see description above on how to find the certification scenario of the storage system.0 => use HWCCT of SAP HANA SPS08 or SPS09 or a related SAP HANA revision Compute server certified with HANA-HWC-AP SU 1. you need to use the same version of HWCCT which had been used for the certification of the storage system used in your SAP HANA TDI infrastructure . was not certified using HWCCT. see http://service. Examples: Compute server certified with HANA-HWC-AP SU 1.com/sap/support/notes/2187426) and storage certified with HANA-HWC-ES 1. use the HWCCT version which had been used for the storage certification.
