Who invented the Tab method?
The Tab method was developed by Dr. Joseph Colizoli "Dr Joe" from Bellevue, Ohio. He has been an
active participant on the Reyes forum from the beginning. Reyes Accordions wants to thank Dr Joe for
this invaluable contribution that gives people from around the world the ability to understand how to
play the three-row button accordion in a very simple and easy to understand format.

Esto es para los que no entienden mi inglés.

Voy a describer la TAB que hemos estado utilizando en este foro.
Es importante que ustedes deben saber que este método no es la
única manera de describir la música. Y, ustedes pueden utilizar
cualquier método ustedes prefieren. Vamos a participar todos
para apprender y para compartir, ayudar, apoyar etc. etc., OK?

Hay 3 filas de botones. Los nombramos G, C y F de afuera al
dentro. Desde la cabeza a los dedos de los pies numeramos los
botones 1 a 10, para G y F, y 1 a 11 para la fila de C. (Esto es
para el Hohner. Hay mas botones para el Gab.)

Entonces, G3 es el tercero botón de la primera fila y F7 es el
septimo botón de la tercera fila etc., no?

Cada botón tiene dos notas. Una por dentro (empujando) y una por
hallando (afuera) del fuelle. Esta marca, ( ), indica
empujando, sí no se toca hallando.

Cuando hay un punto (o espacio) entre los botones se deja de aquí
al siguiente.

Ejemplos: (G2).G2.C2.G3 C3.G4.G5.F3 = La scala de Sol, nota
por nota, se toca cada por cada.

A veces, no hay una letra antes de número porque la queda en la
misma fila.

Estos son equales: (G2).2.C2.G3 = (G2).G2.C2.G3, OK?

Ortro ejemplo: Para tocar notas juntos.

(G23).G23.C23.G34 C3G5.F23.G56.F3C6 = scala de Sol por doble
nota

Oye, hay otros marcas pero no tan importante ahorita, OK?

Reading TABs in English by Dr Joe

The TAB method was developed by the Forum members to facilitate sharing of information about playing the diatonic
button box. Many of us are without teachers, or musical ears, and the TAB method allows for self education and 'ear'
development; using the TABs, in association with the recorded music, one begins to relate what is being heard to the
button positions on the instrument.

There are 2 methods used for TABing; buttons and notes. To follow a note TAB one needs to know the note positons on
the acordeon and play accordingly. The button method requires no prior knowledge.
The button method is very simple to learn and to use.

FIRST: We have 3 rows: G C and F, starting outside and moving in towards the bellows.
The buttons are numbered 1 through 10, 1-11, and 1-10 starting from your nose down to your feet.

SECOND: A button is identified by row and number; C10, 10th button in 2nd row! F1, 1st button in 3rd row.

THIRD: For each button there are 2 notes: one note pushing in and one note pulling out the bellows. Most of our playing
is pulling, so we indicate that by just notating the buttons, without any special markings. Pushing in requires this notation
( ), parenthesis to distinguish it from pulling out the bellows.

Examples:
Playing out; G3 G4 G5
Playing in; (G3) (G4) (G5)
Playing; in-out-in = (G3) G4 (G5)

FOURTH: To simplify TABing, we can often avoid repeating symbols etc.

Examples: G3.4.5 for G3 G4 G5 = G3.G4.G5
(G3.C3.G5.6) for (G3) (C3) (G5) (G6)
F3C6x4 for F3C6.F3C6.F3C6.F3C6

FIFTH: A 'space', or '.', means RELEASE that button and play the next button(s).
SIXTH: If the LETTER (G C F) does not change the next numbered button remains in the SAME row!

SEVENTH: When 2, or more, buttons are played simultaneously, no '.' , or space, exists between the numbers:

Example: (G23) (G2345) (4567) F3C6 F4C7 F3C6F7

EIGHTH: TABs are usually arranged by phrases, adornos or pasaditas. Sometimes in a run of buttons you may see ~ or
* ; G2~.C2.G3.*C3.G4
This is to help with the ritmo and means C2 G3 G4 are all played at one (and the same) speed, then G2~ should be held a
little longer and *C3 should be played shorter, or staccato.

Ninth: A TAB can be played on any Tono acordeon, and it will sound good. Remember, G-C-F just means 1st-2nd-3rd
row. Yet, most of the TABs, to match the recordings, require the appropiate box; usually Sol. However, there are some
TABs, in the archive, for FA and MI boxes and this info is given as part of the TAB text. And, there are some purists
among us who will use E-A-D, F-Bb-Eb for indicating 1-2-3 row when those boxes are used on the recordings.

Unfortunately, there is NO EASY METHOD to convert a TAB between boxes while remaining in the original KEY.

This is all one needs to know to use the TABs. Especially, if one already knows the the ritmo of the song, or has a
recording to listen to for help with the ritmo.

There are TABs that include time values and these are explained in the TABs of those songs.

You should start by reading this FAQ completely for a boatload of useful information.

ACCORDION TABS
1. Where can I find song tabs for the accordion?
Song tabs for the accordion are archived at Paco's Page. This is a cumulative list of all the tabs
shared in the Open Forum and it is updated about once a month. For the bajosexto or guitar, you
can find TABs at ATAME.

2. How do you read the tabs?
This article authored by 'drjoe' will tell you how to read tabs. Here is a Spanish version of the article.

3. Who invented the TAB method?
The Tab method was developed by Dr. Joseph Colizoli "Dr Joe" from Bellevue, Ohio. He has been
an active participant on the Reyes forum from the beginning. Reyes Accordions wants to thank Dr
Joe for this invaluable contribution that gives people from around the world the ability to understand
how to play the three-row button accordion in a very simple and easy to understand format.

4. Who writes the TABs?
The tabs are written and posted by forum participants.

5. Can I play a GCF tab on my EAD, FBbEb, ADG accordion?
Depends...there is a lot of overlap between the various accordions. But in order for you to be able to
interchange accordions, you have to make sure the key of the song is playable in both accordions.
For example, the key of G is readily playable in GCF boxes as well as ADG boxes. However, the
key of A, is rather difficult and incomplete on the GCF box!

In general, these are the basic major keys for each accordion:
GCF: G, C, F, D, Bb
EAD: E, A, D, B, G
FBE: F, Bb, Eb, C, Ab
ADG: A, D, G, E, C

In order for you to play a song that is tabbed for a particular accordion on a different box, you must
first convert, or “transpose,” EACH individual step of the tab to make sure you are still playing the
same notes on the second accordion. To do this, you must know which musical note each button
corresponds to on the different accordion boxes. A program like Paco’s Sr. Maestro will clearly help
you identify these without having to memorize them!

Say, for example, the first step of a tab for a GCF is F3C6. These two buttons correspond to the
notes G-B, and now you want to play this on the ADG box. Well, the notes G-B corresponds to D45
on the ADG box. Hence, instead of playing F3C6 as you would on the GCF box, on the ADG box
you’d have to play D45!

Keep in mind that sometimes the scales are not complete on one box, so the transpositioning may
not be perfect. For example, if you are playing D7A9 on the ADG box, these buttons correspond to
e-g#. Now, if you want to play this on the GCF, but even though the GCF has an e at F6, there is no
g# available. Hence, this is an example of why the key of A is not entirely playable on the GCF box.

Alternatively, and in order to avoid the work that goes into transposing a tab, you could play the
song with exactly the same finger positionings on a different accordion than that for which the tab
was written for. This, however, will change the key of the song from the original version. For

example, if the song is in the key of C on the GCF, it would be in the key of: A on the EAD, Bb on
the FBE, or D on the ADG

6. Is this the only method of tabbing for the accordion?
No, the TAB method developed by 'drjoe' is just one of many possibilities. Another possibility, for
example, would be to use notes rather than button positions. This, however, has been the method
adopted by the Open Forum participants for its ease of use and convenience. It is perfect for the
beginner as it requires no knowledge of music.

7. Are there any tabs for the Piano Accordion?
Yes, though not as many as for the button accordion. The TABs written for the piano accordion are
labelled with the letters 'PA' at the end of the song name.

8. How do you tab/read tabs for the PA?
Coming soon.

9. Why don't you use notes?
Notes can be slightly more confusing, especially for the beginner. The current tabbing method is
very explicit. For example, F3 means F3, and no other button. Notes, however, can be slightly
more vague. The 'G' note, can be F3 on a GCF accordion, or it could be (C5) or (G5).

10. How do I access files that use the 'ñ' character?
Tab filenames that use the 'ñ' may not be readable to some browsers. Here is a workaround:
1. right-click over the TAB link
2. select "Copy link location" or "Copy shortcut"
3. paste the web address in your browser's URL window
4. replace the 'ñ' with '%f1'

ACCORDIONS
1. What are the various key configurations for the button accordion?
The most common key configurations are (in no particular order):

● G-C-F or SOL
● E-A-D or MI
● F-Bb-Eb or FA
● A-D-G or LA

2. What accordion key should I buy?
This is a matter of personal preference. If you want to play songs just like your favorite band, buy
the accordion(s) that they use. The GCF accordion is the most common in terms of availability,
however the most widely used key config in Norteño music is FBbEb.

Eventually you'll get the itch to sing the songs that you play on your accordion. You should consider
what keys your voice can adapt to.

3. What keys can I play on a GCF? EAD? FBbEb? ADG?
Here is a list off keys that can be easily played on different key configurations:

● G-C-F: D, G, C, F, Bb
● E-A-D: B, E, A, D, G
● F-Bb-Eb: C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab
● A-D-G: E, A, D, G, C

6. Do you play the bass buttons?
Some music genres do use the basses. However, for Norteño/ Conjunto music, the bass buttons
are generally not used. In fact, many accordionists choose to remove the bass reed blocks to
reduce the weight of the accordion. The removal also provides extra air release outlets for the
bellows, which in turn helps to pull or push the bellows more quickly.

I have been asked by a few people to TAB out chords. Before I
begin this lengthly process I want to go over some definitions
and make it clear what chords are exactly and how they relate to
scales.

Chords are built on a sequence of successive 3rds.

The sequence;
C E G B D F A

(This line keeps repeating without end.)

A chord is defined by its Root: C Major chord = CEG
D Major = DFA etc. The Root is the lowest note in the sequence
given above: CEGBDFA! Remember the sequence goes on to infinity.
So, A Major = ACE. A is the Root, has to be, by definition,
since we named it A Major. CEGBDFACEGBDFACEGB...see! A is the
lowest note in the sequence.

Do not confuse lowest note in the sequence with pitch!!!

Chord Inversions:

A given chord can be played many ways. These different ways are
called Inversions.

For example: C Major = CEG = c=lowest pitch g=highest pitch
" = EGC = e=lowest pitch c=highest pitch
" = GCE = g=lowest pitch e=highest pitch

These all sound the C Major chord.

Can 2 notes sound a chord? Yes, no, maybe and sometimes!

C Major = CE: We know this will sound C Major since C is the
Root and the lowest note of the sequence of 3rds. And, of
course the inversion, EC, will also sound the C Major chord.(It
can't be an E Minor chord (ECG...) because that does not fit
into the sequence: The sequence for E = EG and G = GB so, only
CE fits = C chord.) Also, the next interval, G, the fifth of the

chord (CEG) will, usually, not be found flattened or sharpened
with a natural CE.

So 2 notes can sound a Major chord. We do this alot on the
acordeon. We also emphasize the Root by doubling up on it: CEC!

C minor = CE-flat. Well, it works here also but, it can get a
little complicated; CE-flatG would be right on and more clear
sounding. The reason for this is that the fifth (G) is often
found flat the half-diminished and diminished chords. So, CE-
flat could be a part of at least three different chords.

For any other chords, I think you can forget about playing only
2 notes. You are going to need more than 2 buttons to sound
these.

OK, that is it for the Intro.

Now, how to do this. I see 2 ways. First, TAB the chords by
type...ie. major, minor, 7th's, diminished etc. Or, by
Roots..ie. G, Gm, Gm7, G7 etc. I feel there will be less errors
if I do it by Root. What I want to do is TAB every possible
combination of a given chord...even if it seems impossible to
play.

I think I will do it by Root. Once all the TABS are made you
will be able to put them together by types. And we can also
start talking about chord substitutions and how chords resolve
and common progressions.

One problem for me is I don't have a keyboard to make the common
symbols used for designating chords...so I guess plain language
will have to do.

is always 1 and its octave is 8. Note that the numbers can
continue on beyond the octave. This is helpful in constructing
9th , 11th, and 13th chords:

1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,
