Bienvenidos a la clase de espaol 1!

Dear parents/guardians,

I am very excited to have the opportunity to teach your child and share my love for the Spanish language and Hispanic culture with
him/her. No matter what career path your child chooses to take upon graduation, knowing Spanish is a very marketable skill and
useful in travel too! My hope for this semester is that s/he will learn the language through real-life, meaningful tasks and that at the
end of the semester s/he will be motivated to continue to learn the language and excited about the doors that speaking a second
language opens.

By the end of this course you will be able to do the following (and more!) in Spanish:
- Introduce yourself and tell what you are like and what you like to do.
- Describe your school day, tell what your classes are like, what extracurricular activities and sports you participate in, etc.
- Talk about what you do and dont like to eat and order in a restaurant.
- Tell about where you like to go in the community and accept and decline invitations.
- Describe family and friends, give physical descriptions, tell your age.
- Describe rooms in a house and talk about household chores.

Grading Policy:
Students will be assessed using a TOTAL POINTS SYSTEM on a variety of tasks including quizzes, tests, projects, speaking
assessments, class assignments, and homework to build proficiency in the four major skill areas of reading, writing, listening
and speaking. Each unit you will be given a homework sheet with 9 different assignments. You may choose which 5 assignments
from the sheet you would like to complete. 5 are required and any that you do beyond 5 will count as 1 point extra credit each (up to
4 points extra credit per unit). Grades will be updated/posted weekly in PowerSchool. Two interim reports will be sent home every
quarter in order to properly monitor student progress. Student work submitted after the due date will be penalized 10 percent per
day up to no lower than a 60 percent. Late work will not be accepted after the interim cut-off dates and the resulting grade is a 0.
Late work deadlines are: Quarter 1 September 15, October 23 Quarter 2 December 4, January 4

1st Quarter: 40% 2nd Quarter: 40% Final Exam: 20%

Course Materials:
- A binder exclusively for Spanish (I recommend at least a 1 inch binder)
- Loose leaf paper
- Pens/Pencils
- A dry erase marker
- Small English-Spanish dictionary (optional but highly recommended)

Wish List:
- Dry erase markers for student mini white board use
- A rag, wash cloth, or sock to erase our mini white boards
- Tissue box

Expectations:
-Respect yourself and others at all times!! (including space, time, personal belongings, etc.)
-Be kind to and supportive of your classmates as you all learn this new language.
-Arrive on time and have a positive attitude. Be in your seat before the bell rings and start the daily warm-up activity.
-Come to class prepared with a pen/pencil, paper, binder, etc.
-Consume all food, drinks, gum and candy in the cafeteria.
- Adhere to the schoolwide BYOD policy red light, yellow light, and green light expectations. (see next page)
Bathroom:
Students are encouraged to use the bathroom between classes and during their lunch periods so they are not interrupting or missing
out on classroom instruction. For emergency situations, they have been provided with a quarterly pass allowing them 10
opportunities to use the bathroom during class time. However, no students are allowed to use the bathroom during the first or last
10 minutes of the class period. Students with medical needs will be treated per their medical plan.

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device):

BYOD means students bring their own devices to school for educational purposes. In the classroom, students will use devices
responsibly, and only with the permission and direction of the teacher or other staff member. The increased use of technology in
RHS classrooms will power up student success today, and for the future. Just like tardy table, violations accumulate by each
individual class over the course of each quarter. Violations restart each quarter, NOT EACH DAY.

First violation: Verbal warning.

Second violation: Final verbal warning.
Third violation: Student will be verbally directed to select one of two options:
A: Student will shut down the device and place it in a secure location in the classroom as designated by instructor.
B: Student will shut down the device and place it in their own personal belongings for the remainder of the class.
Fourth and subsequent violations:
Student will be escorted to ISS for the remainder of the period. Device is confiscated by administrator. BYOD privilege may be
revoked by administrator.

Extra Help:
In order to be successful, you must study 15-20 minutes nightly and practice both speaking & writing using the new vocabulary
and structures that we have gone over in class. In order to learn the language, you must USE the language as much as possible. I am
available to stay after school on Fridays from 2:30 3:30 if you are struggling and would like tutoring. Let me know in advance so I
know that youre coming.

Tips for Success:

Learning a foreign language requires use of different study strategies than your child may be used to using for other classes. Each
day builds upon what we learn the previous day, so it is essential that your child keep up with studying and completing assignments
as they are assigned. I recommend the following tips for your child to be successful in this class:
Daily attendance and on-time arrival
Listen and take good notes! (If you dont take good notes in class, not only is the value of class time depreciated, but also
your study time at home!)
Ask questions as they arise if you have a question, chances are someone else does too!
Come see me for extra help
Complete assignments and homework on time and with effort (do extra homework for extra credit!)
Use Quizlet! (an online flashcard study tool its free)

Please dont hesitate to contact me with any question or concern via email to kmcnamara4@wcpss.net. I sincerely look forward to
teaching your child and Im excited for a great semester of espaol! Go Rams!
