There are two formulas for calculating boiler capacity
First method
a) Based Sizing Formula (Initial Rising Of Water Temperature)
B TU
m( lb ) x Cp( ) x T ( 0 F )
1 b0 F
BTUH(Q) ---------------------------------------------(1)
t(
Where:
(Q): Heat addition due to rising water temperature. (BTUH)

(m): mass of water. (pound-Ib)

(Cp): Specific heat of water. (Btu/ (Ib 0F) = 1 (For pure water)

(T): Temperature difference. (0F)

(t): hours to heating pool (hr)

OR:
b) substitute in following equation:
Ib B TU 0
Gal l onso f water( g a l l o n)sx w a t e r 8.34( )xCp( ) x tem p.ri se( F)
gal l on 1 b0F
BTUH(Q)
Hoursto heatp o o l(hr)

....(2)
Gallons of Water = Pool volume (W x L x D)(ft3) x 7.48(gallon/ft3)

Where:W: width (ft) L: length (ft) D: avg. depth (ft) w a t e r: 8.34 : Ib/gallon
Example
Swimming pool temperature =27 0C (80.6 F)
Inlet temperature =15 C (59 F)
Temperature raise = 80.6-59 =21.6F
Hours to heat pool =20 hr
Width (W)=25 mt,length (L),depth (D)=2.2 mt

Gallons of Water = Pool volume (width * length * avg. depth)(ft3) * 7.48(gallon/ ft3)
= 25 * 50 *2.2 *(3.28)3* 7.48 =725,865 gallons

- 25 -
Department of Consulting

Engineering & Technical
Electro-MechanicalServices
Substitute in equation (2)
BTUH=Gallons of water (gallons)* 8.34( *1 *temp. rise /hours to heat pool
(hr)
=725,865 * 8.34 * 21.6 20=6,538,011 BTUH (A)
.....

Second method
Heat Loss from Pool Surface (Maintaining Water Temperature)
A. By applying ASHRE equation

(BTUH) heat loss from pool surface = pool surface area (ft) x temp.raise (F) x 12

By applying ASHRE equation in second method(A)

Example:
Assuming Wind velocity 5 mph
Heat Loss from Pool Surface (BTUH) = (25*50)m2*(3.282( )2) (ft2) * 21.6(

= (25*50*3.282)*21.6 *12

=3,485721.6 (BTUH) ..(B)

Note: 1F temp difference needs 1 hr @ 5mph
BURNHAM experimental table (B) as following

Third method
Notes: Assumed wind velocity:3.5 mph for the following table.

Temperature
Difference

BTUH/Sq.Ft.

IF Wind velocity up to5 mph multiply BTUH BY 1.25

IF Wind velocity up to10 mph multiply BTUH BY 2.00

Temperature Difference: Ambient air and desired water temp.

Maintaining pool temperature when outside air is( to lower than pool water
may require a larger boiler.

Department of Consulting

Engineering & Technical
Electro-MechanicalServices
The third method from table(B)

(As temperature difference 21.6 , take the nearest from table as 20 ), get 210 BTUH per ft2

BTUH/ Sq. Ft. =210

BTUH = area (ft2)x210

BTUH = (25 *50) *3.282( 2

* 210 * 1.25= 3,530,100 (BTUH).(C)
The three results are:
First method Second method Third method

Based Sizing Formula By applying ASHRE BURNHAM

(Initial Rising Of Water equation experimental table as
Temperature) following

6,538,011 BTUH 3,485,721 BTUH 3,530,100 BTUH

Conclusion:
Take max. Value from eq. (A), (B) (C), the max. Capacity boiler capacity recommended
is 6,538,011 BTUH

(Computation pool) :

1.674.000BTU/hr

(Computation pool) :

:
Model: SPWV 125-2 Hot water boiler
4,185,000 BTU/hr

: ( )
Data given:

1- Dimension = (50*25*2.2 Avg. depth) m3

2- boiler capacity =4,185,000BTU/hr
3- power =125 HP
4- inlet temperature =15 C =59 F

Limitation according to Egyptian code:

1. swimming pool temperature (25- 27) C (according to Egyptian code)
2. hour to heating pool is (48-96) hr for large swimming pool

Design review:
If we take Swimming pool temperature =27 C = 80.6 Fwhile
Inlet temperature =15 C =59 F
Temperature raise = 80.6-59 =21.6 F
A-For computation pool:Pool (50 x 25x 2.2 avg. depth) m3
With initial pool water of 60F=15 C to be raised to 82.2F=27 C(according to Egyptian code)

Gallons of water =[50 * 25 * 2.2 * ( 7.48( = 732463.2 Gallons

1 b0F

BTU=732463.2 * 8.34 * (82.2-60) = 134163695.3

If We Have Boiler with capacity 4,184,000 BTUH

Hours to heat pool =BOILLER CAPACITY(BTU)/ BTUH

Hours to heat pool = 134163695.3/ 4,184,000
=32.06 hrs

This is accepted by Egyptian code (for a large swimming pool heating

takes 48-96 hrs).

From calculation:
The hours needed to raise temperature difference for swimming pool is 35 hr at
least incase of using existing boiler 4,185,000 BTU/hr which is acceptable by
Egyptian code.

(Diving pool) :

3- Power =50 HP
4- Inlet temperature =15 C =59 F

B-For diving pool:(15.28 * 16.85 * 5) m3

[With initial pool water of 60F=15 C to be raised to 82.2F=27 C according to Egyptian

1 b0F

BTU = Gallons of water * 8.34 * temp. rise

BTU =339794 * 8.34 * (82.2-60) = 62912279

If We Have Boiler with 1,600,000 BTUH

Hours to heat pool = Boiler capacity (BTU)/ BTUH

Hours to heat pool = 62912279/1,600,000 = 39 hrs

This is accepted by Egyptian code (for a large swimming pools heating takes 48-96 hr).

From calculation:

The hours needed to raise temperature difference for swimming pool is 40hr at least incase
of using existing boiler 1,600,000 BTU/hr which is acceptable by Egyptian code.
