MILES FOR WEEK

58

15 - Mon

Ran 14 th in 2: 19: 34 in the Boston Marathon.

A beautiful day about 60° with a tailwind (20 mph!). Sunny though. Was in 4 th place all the way till the hill just before Heartbreak Hill (19 miles approx.) when I got a bad charley horse in the back of my right thigh -- some goddamn place as the one in Puerto Rico, Feb 2 nd ’74! Last 8 miles were really rough but in particular the last 2 miles! Mistakes were major but few this year. (1) I ran at near record ace maybe 2:13, 2:15 marathon for 18 miles and I wasn’t nearly ready for such a fast early pace. (2) No speed work!!!! The 5 min mile pace killed my bloody legs, they were cramping like always—not too bad blister and though

I

got a side-ache at 10 miles it wasn’t real bad. Still it was

good race. Got no water fill after 10 miles probably hurt me too!
