Essence of Activity
Students will be investigating conditions of equilibrium for the vessel through the movement of
onboard masses, angles of heel and the forces and moments which may apply to a floating object.
Discussion and investigation of centre of gravity and of free body diagrams applying to various
structures at the marine facilities will also be offered. Direct links between generic statics and
hydrostatics will be evidenced.
These activities will be directed towards the subject JEE 135 Statics currently being conducted by Dr
Jessica Walker.
Conduct of Activities
Each group of students will be split into 2 sub-groups with 1 sub-group engaged in investigations
aboard FTV Reviresco with Paul Furness/David Harte while the other sub-group investigates the
shore-based structures with Jessica Walker. The 2 sub-groups will then swap.
No students will be permitted to board FTV Reviresco without the presence and supervision of Paul
Furness/David Harte.
