Bright As Ever,
on you when you meet Sol Roberts, a positively
glowing woman with a remarkable story to tell.
Sol moved to Laguna Beach with her husband Kenneth 26
years ago. Sol, a graduate of the University of Puerto Rico, is
a retired nurse who knew from the time she was five-years-

old that is what she would do. It is nursing that that has
connected the dots throughout her life. She met Kenneth
while working at UCLA as a nurse. She giggles with glee as
she recounts the story of the first time they met on a blind
date. They have now been married 38 years.
It is their love that pulled her through one of the darkest
times in her life. Sol was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast
cancer in 2007. She describes the moment she received
her diagnosis as shocking. After the shock subsided,
her nursing background drove her to research her
diagnosis and understand what it meant for her. She
says she asked as many questions as she could so she
could decide on her best course of treatment. Today,
she celebrates eight years of being in remission and she
credits Kenneth for providing tremendous love and
support throughout it all.
Sol says that in having cancer she has learned the
importance of sharing. She shares her story, time and
friendship in the hope of promoting breast cancer
awareness and supporting fellow survivors. With
great love she talks about the Spanish breast cancer
survivors group that she facilitates Cafecitos Hope
or coffee chat. She talks about how the women open
up and support each other up during their twice
monthly meetings. One story is particularly touching,
as the Cafecitos members recently lost one of their own.
Mary (for anonymity) lost her battle to breast cancer
and passed shortly after her 40th birthday in July. As the

Rock her World
The message and the mission of Komen is one of empowerment and hope.
With an emphatic knowing Ambrocia says if you or a loved one are newly
diagnosed the number one thing is to know there is always hope. The
second is to take charge of your treatment. Ask questions so you can make
informed decisions. She says breast cancer is no longer a death sentence.
Because of advances in technology and treatment, if detected early
within the breasts, the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer is 99 percent.
Julie encourages women to self-check regularly. She reiterates that early
detection is the key. She says know your body and if something doesnt
seem right, get it checked.
It has become a reality that breast cancer has touched many lives in one way
or another. Julie recalls how Komen Orange County board member Craig
Glorioso of Greenberg Traurig gave a speech about he came to be involved
in the organization. His speech started by saying, Too young, too strong, too
good... Those were the words he lovingly spoke about his wife. When she was
diagnosed with breast cancer he felt joining the board was one of the ways he
could help and support her.
Komen Orange County provides extensive resources and support to the
public. At their offices a welcoming soft-pink room houses donated wigs,
scarves and hats that are provided to women who need them. Literature Exclusive
fills the shelving on the walls and staff is armed with information and a Designs
smile. All of this is possible because of Komens fundraising efforts. Julie
