INVOCATION
INTRODUCTION
In the name of the Father, and of the (+) Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
In todays second reading Paul questions why we judge one another, since
we all stand before the judgment of God. Yet we do sin against one another, GATHERING SONG: The King Shall Come (ELW 260)
and Jesus challenge that we forgive seventy-seven times reveals Gods
boundless mercy. When we hear the words of forgiveness in worship and GREETING
sign ourselves with the cross, we are renewed in baptism to be signs of
reconciliation in the world. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of
the Holy Spirit be with you all!

PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW

Lord God, your Son Jesus Christ prayed you to forgive us even as we
condemned and crucified him. Move us so to forgive those who hate or
would harm us. Lead them and us from prejudice to truth. Empower us to
stand against the evil they and we would do. Give us faith to recognize that
all people are good in that they are created in your image, that all are of
infinite worth, and that you desire all to be saved. We pray this in the name
of Jesus the Christ, your peace offering sent to us when we were yet
sinners. Amen.
CANTICLE OF PRAISE Now the Feast and Celebration (ELW 167) PRAYER OF THE DAY

O Lord God, merciful judge, you are the inexhaustible fountain of

forgiveness. Replace our hearts of stone with hearts that love and adore
you, that we may delight in doing your will, through Jesus Christ, our
Savior and Lord.

A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN

FIRST READING: Exodus 14:19-31 PSALM: PSALM 114

Having decided to let the Israelites go from Egypt, Pharaoh had second Refrain: Saturday night:
thoughts and sent his army after them (14:5-8). Though the passage
through the Red Sea became a sign of salvation for the people of Israel, Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary

live or whether we die, we are the Lords. 9For to this end Christ died and
lived again, so that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

Why do you pass judgment on your brother or sister? Or you, why do
you despise your brother or sister? For we will all stand before the
judgment seat of God. 11For it is written,
As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me,
and every tongue shall give praise to God.

So then, each of us will be accountable to God.

As the Gospel is announced, worshippers are invited to trace a cross upon

When Peter asks about the limits of forgiveness, Jesus responds with a
parable that suggests human forgiveness should mirror the unlimited mercy
of God.

Peter came and said to [Jesus], Lord, if another member of the church
sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven
times? 22Jesus said to him, Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven
times.

For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king
who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. 24When he began the
reckoning, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to
him; 25and, as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, together
with his wife and children and all his possessions, and payment to be
made. 26So the slave fell on his knees before him, saying, Have patience
with me, and I will pay you everything. 27And out of pity for him, the lord
of that slave released him and forgave him the debt. 28But that same slave,
as he went out, came upon one of his fellow slaves who owed him a
hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat, he said, Pay what you
owe. 29Then his fellow slave fell down and pleaded with him, Have
patience with me, and I will pay you. 30But he refused; then he went and
threw him into prison until he would pay the debt. 31When his fellow slaves
saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and they went and
reported to their lord all that had taken place. 32Then his lord summoned
him and said to him, You wicked slave! I forgave you all that debt because
you pleaded with me. 33Should you not have had mercy on your fellow
slave, as I had mercy on you? 34And in anger his lord handed him over to
be tortured until he would pay his entire debt. 35So my heavenly Father will
also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother or sister
from your heart.

As they recite the creed, worshippers are invited to bow beginning with the

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

CONFESSION AND PROCLAMATION OF FORGIVENESS
Sisters and brothers, let us confess our sins in the presence of God and one
another.

Most merciful God,
we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We
have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have
done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our
whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the
sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us,
and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your holy name. Amen.
God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and
made us alive together with Christ. In the name of Jesus Christ, our sins
are forgiven. By grace we have been saved. Almighty God give us faith
through the Holy Spirit that the love of Christ may shine in our hearts and
show forth in our lives.

Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory.
In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the
sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the
cross, opened his arms to all. In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his
disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

A mystic who was widely influential within the church, Hildegard advised
and reproved kings and popes, wrote poems and hymns, and produced

Dag Hammarskjld, renewer of society, died 1961

Monday, September 18, 2017
A Swedish diplomat, Hammarskjld served as the second Secretary
General of the United Nations until his death in a plane crash while trying
to negotiate peace in present-day Zambia. His journal, published as
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Markings, revealed the depth of his Christian faith.

Almighty God, you gave your Son Jesus Christ both as a sacrifice for sin
and a model of godly life. Move us by your Holy Spirit to receive him
always with thanksgiving and conform our lives to his; through the same
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
BLESSING
Nelson Wesley Trout, bishop, died 1996 (TFF)
Wednesday, September 20, 2017
A native of Ohio, Trout served parishes in several parts of the United States
before being elected bishop of the South Pacific District of the American
Lutheran Church, the first African American Lutheran to serve in such a
capacity.

Almighty God, Father, +Son, and Holy Spirit bless you and keep you, now Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist

Matthew (or Levi) was a tax collector in Capernaum for the Roman
SENDING HYMN: Guide Me Ever Great Redeemer government. Tax collectors were frequently despised for dishonesty and for
assisting the occupiers. Jesus nevertheless showed love for them, and chose
DISMISSAL Matthew to be a disciple.
