DESCRIPTION:
Giraffesareoneoftheworld'stallestmammals.Theyarewellknown
fortheirlongnecks,longlegs,andspottedpatterns.Giraffeshave
small"horns"orknobsontopoftheirheadsthatgrowtobeaboutfive
incheslong.Theseknobsareusedtoprotecttheheadinfights.

SIZE:
Malegiraffesarelargerthanfemales.Malesweighbetween2,400and
3,000poundsandstandupto19feettall!Femalegiraffesweigh
between1,600and2,600poundsandgrowtobe16feettall.

POPULATION:
Giraffepopulationsarerelativelystable.

LIFESPAN:
Healthygiraffesliveabout25yearsinthewild.

RANGE:
Giraffescanbefoundincentral,easternandsouthernAfrica.

HABITAT:
GiraffesliveinthesavannasofAfrica,wheretheyroamfreelyamong
thetalltrees,aridland,denseforestsandopenplains.

FOOD:
Theirlongneckshelpgiraffeseatleavesfromtalltrees,typically
acaciatrees.Iftheyneedto,giraffescangoforseveraldayswithout
water.Insteadofdrinking,giraffesstayhydratedbythemoisturefrom
leaves.

BEHAVIOR:
Giraffesarenonterritorial,socialanimals.Theytravelinlargeherds
thatarenotorganizedinanyway.Herdsmayconsistofany
combinationofsexesorages.

OFFSPRING:
Femalegiraffestypicallygivebirthtoonecalfafterafifteenmonth
gestationperiod.Duringthefirstweekofitslife,themothercarefully
guardshercalf.Younggiraffesareveryvulnerableandcannotdefend
themselves.Whilemothersfeed,theyoungarekeptinsmallnursery

groups.

THREATS:
Giraffesarehuntedfortheirmeat,coatandtails.Thetailisprizedfor
goodluckbracelets,flywhisksandstringforsewingbeads.Thecoat
isusedforshieldcoverings.Habitatdestructionandfragmentationare
alsothreatstogiraffepopulations.

PROTECTION:
Nocurrentprotectivelaws.
