WASHINGTON TO COMMISSION FORESTRY BIOMASS SUPPLY STUDY – In the U.S.A., Washington State’s Department of Natural Resources is calling for proposals to undertake a statewide study of potential forest biomass supplies. It’s reported project will be funded through a US$1 million grant from the US Forest Service, aiming to assess availability of biomass feedstocks. It’s reported that the work should help determine appropriate levels of biomass removal from state forests, for use in electricity power generation, heating and to produce liquid transportation fuel. m_biomass.aspx

THE HEALING EFFECTS OF FORESTS - "Many people," says Dr. Eeva Karjalainen, of the Finnish Forest Research Institute, Metla, "feel relaxed and good when they are out in nature. But not many of us know that there is also scientific evidence about the healing effects of nature." Forests – and other natural, green settings – can reduce stress, improve moods, reduce anger and aggressiveness and increase overall happiness. Forest visits may also strengthen our immune system by increasing the activity and number of natural killer cells that destroy cancer cells. BATTERIES NOT INCLUDED... This section is devoted to resource inventory tips and miscellaneous blurbs for whatever uses you care to make. Please limit contributions to one paragraph or so. Thanks, Mike Smith. HELP! FEEDBACK TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE – “Pay it forward!” If you can help with any of the requests below, please take the time to do so. Your kind assistance will be appreciated and rewarded. SATELLITES MEASURING CO2 IN THE ATMOSPHERE - This question was posed via the Applied GIS and RS group: “I am looking for information on satellites that measure the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere and have found the following: GOSAT – Japan; OCO – NASA; IIASA – Eumetsat; and SCIAMACHY – ESA. Are these the extent of our Atmospheric Carbon measuring satellites? I am sure there are more but I wanted to ask on the list as some guidance from the collective is always beneficial. Many thanks and looking forward to your responses, Wesley” Email: OPPORTUNITIES - Several readers of FIU are seeking employment in the forestry field. If you have jobs available and are in need of good people, please consider posting your vacancies in FIU (there is no charge for this service) and the following outlets:
4 . STUDY OF ATTITUDES TO CLIMATE CHANGE - Lucy Green, a postgraduate student in the School of Psychology, Cardiff University, is carrying out a study on attitudes to climate change and has asked for assistance from LCCN members. The project, entitled ‘Understanding public attitudes to climate change problems and solutions’ aims to explore the patterns of attitudes and values which are present in individuals who are taking action on climate change. As part of the study she has prepared a short questionnaire which assesses general values, beliefs about climate change and what kind of behaviours individuals are currently, or would like to engage in to combat climate change. She is particularly interested in finding out the views of individuals who are actively involved in climate change related behaviours.
