Hurricane Harvey
By Rylie Ferguson

On Friday, August 25, Hurricane Harvey made

landfall in southern Texas as a category four
storm. Leaving almost 52 inches of rain, Harvey
broke a 50-year record for tropical cyclone rainfall
measured in a single place.
Authorities said more than 13,000 were
rescued and put into shelters, with 120,000
residents with no running water. Going from a

Popular Lies You Were Told as a Kid

By Julia MacDonald

I would never have done that when I was your age!

My parent always said this, later I found out that she did do it at that age and didnt want me to do it as well,
normally because it was a bad thing to do. All I wanted to do was go to a party with my friends all night, okay,
there might not be parents, but why not?

Sitting too close to the TV strains your eyes.

Most people believe this but it really doesn't hurt your eyes. Your parents probably didnt want you to sit too
close to the t.v. or watch it too long, for that matter.

I always know when youre lying.

There's not much to say about this, they just wanted you to tell the truth. Yes, I did see the movie you wanted
us to watch as a family. Are you happy?

The pet went to live on the farm.

I guess telling a child about a pet who passed is scary for a child, but can you at least clarify which farm? They
are going to find out some day.

It wont hurt, I promise.

Sure it wont. Tell them the truth, theyre going to feel it either way. Shots arent going to be fun, stupid needle!

They dont sell replacement batteries for that toy.

Sneaky. They really dont like that toy, if they have to say that. Sooner or later, youre going to find out they got
rid of your favorite toy for no reason. A robot dog isnt that bad, it just barked every second at a very loud
volume.

At What Age Should Teens Get a Smartphone?
By Caleb French

In my personal opinion, I believe that teens should get a smartphone, with full access to the internet
around ages 13 to 15. Now, that is just my opinion, and many parents feel different about this. A good
alternative to smartphones is a tablet, iPod, or iPad, which are mostly used for games.
First, the age at which teens, or kids, should get a smartphone is completely up to the parents and the
behavior of the child. If they think that their kids are responsible enough to have an smartphone at age nine,
then so be it, but there should be an age that kids shouldnt have this technology. Any kid under seven who
has a phone, while the parents might think that they're ready, don't know entirely what their kid is doing on it.
An article called Cell Phone Parenting says that age doesn't really matter, it's their maturity, but you're giving
them powerful access to anything in the world. Therefore, kids must be responsible and respectful with their
phones.
Finally, some other reasons could be that they play a lot of sports and are at other people's houses a
lot, or away from home often. The parents might feel the need to get their kid a phone, which in the right case,
is beneficial for both. Another good alternative could be a flip phone, or a phone that is only able to do call and
text, which is all kids really need at a young age.
In conclusion, the age that kids get a phone just depends on the parents and the maturity level of the
children.

The Best Things About Yale

By Violet Okuszka
Some of the best things about Yale. Yale may be a small town, but there are many things to do.
One of the best things about Yale, in the summertime, is that we have a Bologna Festival every
year, right in town. It is a very cool and fun festival to go to. The Bologna Festival has small
rides, games, and food stands, and many people enjoy it.
Yale has all schools: Elementary, Junior High and High School! Its very helpful to have all three
schools together in the same town. I go to Yale schools, and theyre all great! I do recommend.
We have many places to go, right in town. If you wanted to you could walk up town and go to a
restaurant or you could just hang out with your friends!
Another one of the best things is the Yale park. Many kids and teens go there to hang out. Yale
schools also have their football games there. Yale park is one of the best places to go.

Wildfires By Emma Koch

A wildfire can occur anywhere, especially hot places with a lot of wooded areas. The first wildfire
happened approximately 419 million years ago. There are three conditions that need to be present in order for
a wildfire to burn, which firefighters refer to as the fire triangle: fuel, oxygen, and any type of heat source. In
Kansas, wildfires have burned as much as 625 square miles of land.
Wildfires are tragic, and can happen anywhere.

Mackinac Island
Mackinac Island is located on Lake Huron,
between Upper Peninsula and Lower Peninsulas.
Mackinac was found originally in 1670 by Jesuit Priest
Claude Dablon. Mackinac island was home to native
americans in the 17th century, before europeans
explored the area. The Anishinaabe (Ojibwa) indian
tribes were Mackinac Islands first known inhabitants,
who considered the island was considered to be the
sacred home of the Gitche Manitou or known as The Great Spirit. Mackinac was created by the
Great Hare. Straits of Mackinac became an important French fur trading location. British took control
of the straits of Mackinac after the French and Indian War. During the War 1812, the British captured
the fort and protected it by building Fort George on the high ground behind Fort Mackinac. Then in
1814, the British and Americans fought a second battle on the north side of the island, but the
Americans failed to recapture the island. Later on in 1815, the Treaty of Ghent forced the british to
give back the island and surrounding mainland to the U.S. A ban on motor vehicles since it was
introduced in 1898 to 1901 due to health concerns and safety of the islands horses and residents.
This ban still continues today and people only use bikes and horses to get to places on the island.

Egypt Terrorist Attack

The attack resulted in 18 policemen killed and seven wounded. The attack happened in the Sinai
Peninsula in Egypt along a road where ISIS fighters were waiting to ambush the convoy. It all
started with an IED (improvised explosive device) along the road making the armored trucks
on fire. The very last truck was carrying an EMP Jammer (Electromagnetic pulse). The fighters
then came out and started shooting and started a firefight. All of the policemen were killed and
as we know of, two of the Islamic State fighters were killed. The fighters that have survived
stole a police pickup truck and left the scene.

Why Are Gas Prices so high?

Recently, the gas prices has been raising do to the oil drilling rigs in the Gulf of Mexico having
to be shut down do to the hurricanes. The local gasoline and diesel fuel companies/industries gets
their supplies to make the gas from southeast United States and sometimes eastern hemisphere. At
this time of year shipping and distribution create a problem with supply and demand. Another effect
on prices is the New York Stock Exchange.
--How it Gets Here
When the oil gets shipped to the company the oil either has to be in a truck or by boat. So that
means if it comes by boat, the supplies (oil) would have to come through the hurricane waters. The
ships would get delayed do to the wells being shut down because of bad weather. If it is delivered by
truck they are unable to fill the tanks due to the refinery being shut down due to floods.
Supply and Demand
When the oil supply gets low there is a demand for more gasoline. This causes a demand for
more oil to be imported from foreign countries. When this happens the oil producing nations charge
the United States for higher prices. This cost is passed on to the consumer who buys it. When the
United States is at full production with their own oil the prices go down.
--Other Causes That Increase Cost
Fuel prices can vary in different states depending on the sales tax. Another cost is federal tax,
destination fees, and road repair tax. Taxes can account for up to 40% of the cost per gallon.

Pg. 11 The Paws Herald
Is the cost for driving lessons too expensive?
Millions of people all around the world have to drive, but the cost is way too much to learn how
to. For most driving schools it costs $200 to $800, as said on carsdirect.com, and that's really
expensive. Lots of people have a job that requires them to drive but then cant afford to take any
lessons to do so. In my opinion the price should be lowered to about $200-$400, or even less.
I think this because most parents dont have $800 to spare when they could teach their child
themselves. Instead let people save about $400 dollars to give their child that extra help to be a
better driver, that will help cause less/no accidents in the future.
In conclusion driver's ed should be more affordable. The average person doesnt have that
kind of money to spare. This money could be going to more useful places like charity, schools, etc.
This is why drivers ed should be more affordable.

Southwest Airlines Lend a Helping Hand Towards Hurricane

Harvey Victims
Hurricane Harvey was an absolutely devastating hurricane that hit Houston, Texas near the
end of August. It is sad to know that about 40,000 homes were destroyed, and over 500,00 cars and
other vehicles among the rubble. Beyond that, thousands of people are now donating to the Red
Cross for Hurricane Harvey relief for Harvey victims. On top of that, the Southwest Airlines decided to
help victims, too. On the date of September 5, the Southwest Airlines flew more than 60 different
animals to a shelter located in the heart of San Diego. The devastation of Hurricane Harvey has
impacted a number of our communities along the Gulf. Our hearts are with our customers,
employees, family and friends who have experienced loss and devastation from the storm, says
Linda Rutherford, the Chief Communications Officer of the Southwest Airlines. The airlines have
partnered up with the Helen Woodward Animal Center to make it possible to fly the animals to the
shelter in San Diego. These are the silent victims of the storm, says Mike Arms, president of the
Helen Woodward Animal Center (HWAC). There are shelters that have been devastated by
Hurricane Harvey, without electricity, and without supplies.
The team has decided to call this Operation Pets Alive! and is taking in lots and lots of
abandoned cats and dogs from their previous shelters. We are honoured to help save those lives
and we are lucky to have incredible friends like Southwest Airlines to help make this all possible,
said Mike Arms. Therefore, we thank the HWAC and the Southwest Airlines for helping the pets that
were caught in the storm. Dont forget! There is still time to donate money for the victims of
Hurricane Harvey. The Red Cross is taking donations at:

How to Save Money! 5 easy tips
1. If it's a nice day, you open your windows instead of using your air conditioner, thatll cost you money
especially if you're running it all day. (FWOOSH) Bye money!
2. Middle school students, when a friend or family member has a birthday party it costs money to buy a gift and
sometimes it gets pricy. Instead of buying a gift why don't you make one yourself it will save you money and
there's a ton of things you can make with at home items.
3. A thing lots of people do is when you're out working you been out of the house for hours you have not eaten
a thing so you stop at Little Caesars or Mcdonalds and spend $10 on food then you get home and realize you
had the same food at home and you could of waited another 20 minutes until you got home to eat.
4. (For heaven sakes, turn off the lights!) I'm sure you have heard that before when your mom yells at you for
leaving the light on. Thats one thing families do a lot on purpose or on accident light are a huge part of money
loss use less light at a time like when you turn on the light think is there another way I could get this room lit up
other than electricity.
5. DON'T BUY NAME BRAND CLOTHES! You don't need them there not a need in your life.If you really
want name brand close more than that new pool or football you always wanted. Everyday you see people
wearing Nikes, Under Armour, American Eagle like those are special things you don't need them. It's a thing
that people waste their money on.

Should We Put all our Books and Assignments on the Internet?

It's no secret that we can download books onto our devices, such as our phones and or tablets. But
should the schools take advantage of that and put all books and assignments on the chromebooks and ipads?
Would it actually benefit the students? No, I don't believe it would be beneficial to all of the students.
Yes it would make things more convenient and accessible but not all students are as tech savvy as
others. As known not everyone is good with using the computers, some people barely know how to turn them
on. Think about this you do an assignment in class and if you get lost you can ask your friends or the teacher for
help, but when you go home who do you have to help you? The chances are if you don't know how to actually
use a computer then your parents probably don't either so where does that leave you? Right, with a late or
missing assignment just because you don't know what you're doing. And let's not forget the fact that not
everyone has wifi at or or even a computer so the teachers would have to give you all the time you need to do
your work which means they would have less time to teach resulting in you not learning everything you
supposed to that year. Or they would have to lend out their chromebooks or ipads to those who don't have one at
home and hope they don't break it. Because we know not everyone is as careful as others. Some people would
probably just toss it in their backpack without thinking twice, or it could rain while the person is walking to
school which could also ruin or damage the device. And some students are more hands on learners they like to
actually write stuff down. With the textbooks the students can actually write down their work and how they did
it.
All in all that is why I don't think the schools should put everything on the computers. It would cause in
one of two things the teachers losing their time to teach so we wouldn't learn everything we need to or in a lot of
students getting late or missing work just because they don't have internet or a computer. What do you think
about the topic?

Thriving or Diving?
The history of theatre
Theatre has been around for close to 2500 years. In fact, ever since the third century, the ancient greeks
were using theatre as a way to entertain themselves. The art of theatre lets the actor express their emotions in a
truly exquisite way. The early civilizations have been captivating the beauty and art of theatre for hundreds of
years. However, this is modern day and some people today think that famous things like broadway isnt very
cool or exciting anymore.
Teatre has many genres such as, drama, action, etc. however, the ancient greeks had one type of genre,
drama. The ancient greeks had three types of drama, comedy, tragedy and the satyr play. The ancient greeks
spread their love of theatre world wide ever since the third era in fact even the nazis liked a good theatre play.
The love of theatre nowadays is not as much as it once was.
In the renaissance age, there was a man who was very articulate when it came to drama. His name was
Shakespeare. He was one of the most famous people who walked the earth. Shakespeare was so talented that
people say that great performances are worthy of Shakespeare. Shakespeare was a great poem writer and
performer but he wasnt unbeatable.
Like I said before, theatre has been around for close to 2500 years. Theatre is slowly slipping from this
society. If theatre is to live on then we must acknowledge it as a valued thing in modern day society. Weve
got to have class people i mean come on.
By Nick Bevins

The modern theatre

The image of theatre has been changed a lot over the last few centres. Theatre came from humble and simple
beginnings. The modern picture of theatre is now movies. People have even changed the word theatre to
theater. The image of theatre is deforming but for how long is the question that this writer has to ask.
The theatre in this more modern day is a theatre that people go to, to watch movies. It is my thought that
they should go back to just calling it a cinema. The word cinema is easier to say or we can even just call it the
movies. If the modern world is to retain the class its lost, then we must bring back this struggling art form. We
must bring back the classy and humble art form that has shaped our society to be what it is.
We live in a world where the people are occupied by the modern tech. We live in a society where people
just dont care anymore. If we as people want to be what our ancestors wanted us to be then we need to bring
back theatre. Let the light shine! Let it shine on this blank canvas we call a world!

A new Year at Yale Jr. High.
Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year. I hope your first month has been fun and full of new
experiences. As we begin and progress throughout the school year our goal is to document and
allow you to relive all the great times and events. This year the yearbook class will not only put out
the best yearbook you will have ever seen, but also be sending out a digital newspaper to you as
often as possible. We hope for at least one edition a month. The Paws Herald will give you the
news you will want to read. Articles will range with the News (local/state/US/international) to interest
pieces (Travel/$/Fashion/etc) to editorials and fun comics and puzzles. We hope that you enjoy the
paper and will use it find helpful facts and topics of interest. You will find announcements for
upcoming events as well. So please stay tuned and if you have any concerns or stories you would
like covered please email us at:
