Design Calculation Salient Features

CARRIAGEWAY LIVE LOAD ( CWLL )

Superstructure meant for 2-lane carriageway has been designed for governing effect of CWLL
loading as specifeid in IRC:6-2014 with appropriate lane reduction factor and suitable allowances
for impact so placed on the span to produce maximum stresses.

The following CWLL combination have been considered in the design. The design is then carried
out for the most critical CWLL Combination.

1 Two lane of Class A along with Footpath live load

2 One lane of Class 70RWheel with Footpath live load
3 One lane of Class 70RTrack with Footpath live load

TEMPERATURE EFFECT
The climate condition is assumed to be "Extreme". The temperature variation of +/- 25 oC
shall be considered for the design of bearings and expansion joints. Temperature gradients given
in IRC 6:2014 has also been considered to evaluated the effect on structure due to daily changes
in temperature.
Coefficient of thermal expansion =1.2 x 10-5 as per IRC: 6-2014

4. STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

SECTION PROPERTIES

uncracked sectional properties have been used for analysis. Cross sectional area of slab per meter
width has been calculated .

ANALYSIS FOR SOLID SLAB

Deck slab has been modeled as line model and has been analysed for SIDL & Live live

Live load effects shall be taken based on effective width method.

STAAD-Pro Software , which is widely accepted for structural analysis,has been used for analysis.

For the design of Solid Slab , Moments and Shear forces has been detremined at Mid span
and Support respectively . The design of Deck Slab has been carried out by design excel sheets.

Differential Temperature Rise

Due to rapid inflow of heat across the section causes differential temperature, differential
temperature rise has been considered as per the fig 10(b) of IRC 6- 2014

Differential Temperature Fall

As the temperature falls, section flow the heat to the outside atmosphere which causes negative temperature variation across the section.
Differential temperature fall is considered as per the fig 10(b) of IRC 6- 2014

Distribution reinforcement:
As per Clause 16.6.1.1. of IRC:112-2011 , Secondary Reinforcement shall be at least 20 % of the main reinforcement

DESIGN OF SLAB FOR ULS SHEAR

Ultimate Design Shear Force = 235.30 kN/m

Design Shear Strength of Concrete,(tc) without Shear Reinforcement:

As per Clause 10.3.2 of IRC:112-2011,

Design shear resistance of the member without shear reinforcement is given by:

VRd,c 0.12 K 80r1 f ck
0.33
0.15s cp bw d eq.1

Subjected to minimum of V Rd , c V min 0.15 s cp b w d eq.2

where,
K = 1 + SQRT(200/d) 2.0 , where d is depth in mm
K = 1.46
vmin = 0.031 K fck
3/2 1/2
, fck = 35.00 N/mm2
Hence vmin= 0.323 N/mm2
scp = Concrete compressive stress in concrete at centroidal axis in the direction of axial load or prestressing
scp = NEd/Ac < 0.2 fcd where , fcd = 0.67 fck/1.5
scp = 3.13 N/mm2
Hence,
tc = VRd,c/(bw.d) = Vmin + 0.15 scp = 0.7920 N/mm2 From eq.2

r1 = Steel Ratio = Asl/(bw . d) 0.02

Hence r1 = 0.0028
tc = VRd,c/(bw.d) = 0.817 N/mm2 From eq.1

Max of eq.1 & eq.2

tc = VRd,c/(bw.d) = 0.817 N/mm2 Corresponds to steel ratio = 0.282% & M35 Grade of
Concrete
Shear stress( vEd) = VEd/(bw*d)

vEd = 235300.00 = 0.25 N/mm2 <

1000.00 x 952.00 0.817 MPa

AsTv is lesser than Tc Hence No Shear Reinforcement is need to be provided.

CHECK FOR PUNCHING AROUND VEHICLE LOAD (as per IRC:112-2011, Clause 10.4.3):

Maximum load on each wheel = 100 KN ( 70 RW Boggie load )

Maximum tyre pressure = 5.273 kg/cm3
Contact width perpendicular to span, L = 0.86 m
Contact width parallel to span,B = 0.190 m

Basic Equation for Punching shear stress( vEd) = b VEd,req

ui * d

Depth of Slab , d = 952.00 mm

Length of perimeter, ui = pi() * 4 d + L * 2 + B * 2 for Rectangular section = 14062.48 mm
Loaded area under perimeter = pi() * (4 d)^2/4 + L * 2d*2 + B * 2d*2 + L * B = 1.55E+07 mm2
VEd = 0.00 for deck slab
VEd,req = VEd - VEd = 100.00 kN.
b = 1.00 for axial load without bending

vEd = 0.01 N/mm2
