Determining the Design parameter

One of the important parameter to determining the appropriate design is through the
pressure drop. Generally, industrial pressure drop for scrubber is 0.5-1.0 in H2O/ ft of packing. High-
pressure drop will cause the increased in cost. The high pressure difference may cause from the liquid
fully filled the void in the packing. The velocity operate usually in range of 60-70% of flooding velocity.

Gas temperature also is one of the important parameter in ensuring the effective mass
transfer. At high temperature, the total adsorption rate will be decreased and it will make the solvent
loss through evaporation. Rate of the reaction between solvent and pollutant also need to be
determined in order to perform the mass transfer mechanism required for the operation. The
pollution characteristic, the waste gas loading, and solvent composition. There must be known value
of diffusivity, humidity, viscosity, density, molecular weight of all composition related and all these
parameter are required in order to design the scrubber based on the equilibrium relation of pollutant
and solvent.

The design are in approach to determine the column surface area and pressure drop required through
the column. The gas and liquid stream condition at entering and exit column can be determine and
included in the mass balance diagram. The final determination from this step is the determining the
Liquid/Gas Ratio needed for the optimum operation. The material balance equation could be form
represent the actual operating line. The L/G ration will be used to relate with the equilibrium line. The
equilibriums line will be used for determining the Transfer Unit number and height.

In determining the column diameter, the Eckert’s graph of Y-X axis provide the relation to calculate
the cross-sectional area of tower, height of packing and its surface area and lastly the pressure drop
can be obtain to see the power requirement.
