INTRODUCTION:
This design note is for the purpose of explaining the design philosophy of
MBR based sewage treatment system. The source of waste water is from the
toilets, kitchens, wash basins and showers etc., from the entire
development. The waste water is entirely domestic in nature.

DOMESTIC SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT SCHEME (proposed):

The following treatment scheme is based on the quantity and quality of
waste water. It is proposed to treat the waste water in a MBR (membrane
bio reactor) system.

The treatment process includes the following:

Bar Screen chamber coarse
Oil and grease separator
Collection and equalization with coarse bubble
Fine bar screen (semi Automatic)
Pump room
Activated sludge process aeration tank with fine bubble
MBR tank (with air scouring)
Sludge holding tank with coarse diffuser
Filter press with screw pump equipment for sludge.
MBR cleaning tank
On line UV or Chlorination
Final treated water sump
Air ventilation system if required

DESCRIPTION OF TREATMENT UNITS:

A) BAR SCREEN:
Bar screen made of MS material epoxy painted with 8mm & 6mm openings
shall be incorporated in a channel on the incoming sewage line. This screen
is for the purpose of arresting solid particles, trash and solids of larger than
8/6 mm size and preventing them from passing through into the succeeding
treatment stages.
Type of screen: MS construction with MS rods placed at 8 & 6 mm with MS
hand rake all epoxy painted.

B) FINE SCREEN:
Type of screen: Mechanically cleaned automatic system SS fine bar screen
pore size 2mm with semi automatic cleaning system.

C) OIL & GREASE SEPERATOR:

An oil & grease separator is done in civil. This Oil and Grease separator is
for the purpose of arresting kitchen oil into the succeeding treatment
stages.

D) COLLECTION AND EQUALISATION TANK:

Sewage generation is not uniform and maximum quantity comes out during
morning and evening hours. The flow may be zero during afternoon and mid
night. To optimize the size of the plant, the plant is designed for continuous
operation and hence there is a need to provide a buffer tank to store
sewage during its peak hour generation and supply the same during lean or
no flow hours. Hence our plant is provided with a good capacity of buffer
tank called asEQUALISATION TANK. Screened and de-greased sewage is
then passed into the equalization tank to homogenize the sewage quality
and also even out flow fluctuations and feed sewage of uniform quality at
constant rate to subsequent treatment units. Air mixing is also provided to
mix the contents of the equalization tank. A coarse bubble aeration grid
system is provided to mix the contents of the equalization tank and also to
avoid septic conditions in the tank. Hydraulic retention period here will be
8 Hrs.

E) RAW EFFLUENT TRANSFER PUMPS (2W+1S):

The mixed and equalized raw effluent is pumped into the aeration tank.
The transfer pump is then selected for the average flow at a head of 12
Meters. Pump selection is made from standard Manufacturers curves for a
total head of 12 M.
Raw Effluent Pumps MOTOR (1W+1S)
Type Horizontal non clog.
Rating Continuous
Rating RPM: 2900.
Enclosure IP 68.
Class of Insulation F-class.

F) AERATION TANK:
Biological stabilization of the waste water is carried out in the aeration tank
in the presence of microorganisms. In this tank Oxygen is given for aeration,
in order to reduce BOD and COD. This is done by pumping in air. The air
containing oxygen is used by the bacteria to consume the organic matter
and convert it to carbon dioxide and water. In aeration tank, MLSS (mixed
liquor suspended solids) in the range of 3000 to 6000 mg/l or more are
maintained. The high amount of bacteria gives better and complete removal
of organic matter from the raw effluent in relatively small area. Oxygen
required for the bacteria is supplied through the blower.
Aeration: fine bubble air diffusers
MLSS: 3000 -6000Mg/ Lit
Oxygen 2 kg per kg of BOD
requirement:

G) BLOWER:
(For equalization tank, aeration tank, sludge tank and MBR product tank)
(1+1)
Blower specifications:
Type Twin lobe blower
Air blowers MOTOR (1W+1S)
Type EFC MOTOR
Rating continuous
RPM 1600
Enclosure IP 55
Class of Insulation F-class

H) DIFFUSER (for aeration tank):

Fine Type: EPDM with tubular membrane (dia 90mm x 1000mm).

I) BLOWER (FOR MBR AIR scouring):

Blowers are provided to supply air for the membrane air scouring. The
blower line for air scouring is connected to the grid of KOLON in the
cassette.

J) MBR TANK:
The waste water (mixed liquor) with the bio mass flowing out of the aeration is
taken to an MBR tank with a hopper bottom.

Module dimension (as per design): (Immersed)

The MBR operation is totally done by PLC based control panel which
automatically does the suction, back washing depending on the time which
is set.

K) SLUDGE CIRCULATION TRANSFER PUMPS (1W+1S):

The return sludge from MBR tank is pumped into the aeration tank. And
excess sludge into the sludge holding tank
Type : Horizontal centrifugal, non clog, self priming, open
Impeller
Sludge pumps (Capacity as per Design) -MOTOR (1W+1S)
Enclosure : IP 55

L) FILTER PRESS +SCREW PUMP:

From the sludge holding tank the sludge is sent to the filter press, where it
is made to cakes. The excess water is sent back to equalization tank.
Material of Construction: Polypropylene.
Type: Non clog screw type (as per design), 1 set with screw pump.

M) FINAL TREATED WATER TANK:

The water sucked from the membranes is of very high quality with respect
to BOD, COD and suspended solids, and is stored in a final treated water
tank for further use. Retention period: 10-12 hrs.
