Term 1 Assignment 1

Izzan Nur Aslam (94016169)

1. Three representative samples; A, B, and C, of same coal were separately subjected to the
standard determination of ash, volatile matter, and moisture contents. As-received, the
samples gave the following results:

a. Sample A gave an ash (A) content of 30.0%

b. Sample B gave a volatile matter (VM) content of 30.0%
c. Sample C yielded a moisture (M) content of 15.0%

Air drying of the raw as-received samples reduced their mass by 10%. As they were dried,
then samples content was also reduced as tabulated in Table 1.1 below:

Table 1.1. Reduction of samples content after being air-dried.

Samples Content Before Air-Drying After Air-Drying
A A 30 % 27 %
B VM 30 % 27 %
C M 15 % 13.5 %

In the ASTM Standard D-338 of Coal Classification System, the basis of identifying coal rank
is the Fixed Carbon (FCdmmf) and Volatile Matter (VMdmmf), both are in dry mineral-matter-
free basis. Using the data of air-dried samples content in Table 1.1 above, the FCdmmf and
VMdmmf are calculated as follows:

Correction for VM = VM M = 27 13.5 = 13.5%

FC = 100 (A + VMCorrected + M) = 100 (27 + 13.5 + 13.5) = 46%
FC 46
= 100% = 100% = . %
FC + VMcorrected 46 + 13.5
= 100% FCdmmf = 100 77.3 = . %
Table 1.2. Classification of coals by rank (ASTM Standard D-338)

As the FCdmmf and VMdmmf obtained from 69 to 78% and from 22 to 31%, respectively, the
coal rank based on the Table 1.2 above is classified as Bituminous and grouped as Medium
Volatile Bituminous Coal.

2. After passing through a primary Bradford breaker, the particle size distribution of a coal
follows the RRB function with a size modulus of 6.0 mm and a distribution modulus of 0.79.
This coal is to be sized using a double-deck vibrating screen and a sieve ben, as shown in
the figure below. The rate for the fine product should be 75 t/hr.

Note the oversize from the sieve bend is to be blended with the intermediate size fraction
from the double-deck screen at a mass ratio of 3.95:1 (3.95 t of sieve bend oversize to 1 t
of intermediate size fraction) to obtain the intermediate product.
