1.a) Derive a relation for minimum number of teeth on the gear wheel and pinion to avoid

interference.

2).A pair of involute gears is in mesh. The application restricts the space to accommodate these

gears with a centre distance of 102mm. If the gears have a module of 3 mm, and a ratio of

speeds of driver to driven is limited to 2.4:1, determine the number of teeth on these gears.

3) Obtain an expression for minimum number of teeth on a rack to avoid the interference.

4) Explain the meaning of following terms with neat sketches.

1) helix angle

2) transverse pitch

3) Normal pressure angle

4) Normal pitch

5 a) A gear pair of involute profile with pressure angle of 14.5 has a module of 4mm and the

number of teeth 25 and 60 . if the addendum is one module and dedendum is 1.157 times the

module , determine the length of arc of contact and contact ratio.

6) Two gear wheels having non standard involute teeth mesh externally giving velocity ratio

4:1. The pressure angle is 16 degrees. The arc of approach is not to exceed the circular pitch.

Determine

a) Minimum number of teeth on each wheel to avoid the interference.

b) Addendum of the wheel in terms of circular pitch.

c) Angle of action during approach on both the wheels, taking 2 mm

module. Assume the smaller wheel to be driver

Assignment unit-2

7) Define the following terms;

i) Helix angle.

ii) Axial pitch.

iii) Pitch cone angle

iv) Lead angle.

8) The centre distance between two parallel shafts connected by helical gears is 130 mm. If the

pinion and gear has 16 and 36 teeth, with a helix angle of 22 degrees, determine the pitch

diameters of the gears

or

9) Derive an expression for efficiency of spiral gears and hence determine the expression for

efficiency of worm and worm gear.

8) Explain with a neat sketch force analysis of Bevel gear.

Assignment unit-3

9a) A reverted gear train shown in fig 1 in used to provide a speed ratio of 10. the module of

gears 1 and 2 is 3.2mm and of gears 3 and 4 is 2mm . determine suitable numbers of teeth on

each gear. No gear is to have less than 20 teeth. the centre distance between shaft 160mm .ratio

for gears 1 and 2 is 2.5 and for gears 3 and 4 is 4.

10. Explain tabulation method for epicyclic gear train and write speed of different elements of

the gear as per the figure 2 .

11 a) Explain with example the difference between gearbox and gear train.

b) In a reverted epicyclic train, the arm A carries two wheels B and C and a compound wheel D-

E. The wheel B gears with wheel E and the wheel Cgears with wheel D. The number of teeth on

wheels B,C and D are 75, 30 and 90 respectively. Find the speed and direction of wheel C when

the wheel B is fixed and arm A makes 110 r.p.m. clockwise.

12 ) In an epicyclic gear train shown in fig. 3, a gear C has both internal and external teeth is

free to rotate on an arm driven by shaft S1.It meshes externally with the pinion B. The gears

have the following number of teeth, ZB=20, ZC=36 and 44, ZD=54. Determine the velocity

ratio [10]

a) Between Shafts S1 & S2 when D is fixed.

b) Between S1 and D when S2 is fixed.

c) What will be the torque required to fix the casing D if a torque of 200 Nm is applied on the

shaft S1?

Assignment unit-5

12. a) Describe the axially displaceable cone CVT along with its comparison with other

variators.

b) A four wheel vehicle of mass 2500kg has a wheel base 2.5m , track width 1.5m, and

height of centre of gravity 0.6m above the ground level and lies at 1 m from the front axle .

Each wheel has an effective diameter of 0.8m and a moment of inertia of 0.8 kg.m 2. the drive

shaft , engine flywheel and transmission are rotating at four times the speed of road wheels, in

clockwise direction when viewed from the front , and is equivalent to a mass of 80 kg having a

radius of gyration of 100mm. if the vehicle is taking turn of 60m radius at 60 km/h, find the

load on each wheel. 10

13 a) Compare stepped and stepless regulation of speeds and explain different types of face

plate variators. 6

b) A ship is propelled by a turbine rotor of mass 500kg and has a speed of 2400rpm . The

rotor has a radius of gyration of 0.5m and rotates in clockwise direction when viewed from stern

. find the gyroscope effects in the following cases:

a) the ship runs at a speed of 15 knots ( 1 knot = 1860 m/h ) . it steers to the left in a curve of 60

m radius.

b)The ship pitches _+5 from the horizontal position with the time period of 20sec of simple

harmonic motion.

c) the ship rolls with an angular velocity of 0.04 rad/s clockwise when viewd from stem . also

calculate the maximum acceleration during pitching.

Assignment unit-6

14. a) Explain following terms:

i) Function Generation.

ii) path Generation

iii) Precision points

iv) Structural Error

b) Using Freudenstein equation , design a four bar mechanism to generate the function Y= X1.4

for an interval in X from 1 to 4 . the input link is to start from 30 and is to have a range of 90 ,
