Network Design Contest Problem Statement

Your company (company name = Team + team # + Network Consultants), has made it to the final cut
and the Board of Directors of Massive Comm wants to see a detailed proposal for the complete re-
design of the NOC. The details must include costing information and a budget that describes how you
are going to meet their requirements. The NOC location is in San Diego, CA and they currently use a
single OC12 connection to provide service for the entire enterprise, including the satellite
communications division. The satellite communications division uses over half of the available
bandwidth to support their customer base. Massive Comm is set to launch a new product line that
includes two distinct products that you must fully support in the re-designed NOC to win the bid. All
documents must have your company name on them.

The first product to be launched that you must be able to support in the NOC is the Streammedia online
product for Smart Phones and devices. Streammedia currently has 150,000 beta users that can get
streaming video content and Live TV on their Smart Phones worldwide, 24/7/365. The projection for
post launch user increases will be approximately 70% to 80% growth annually over the first five years.
The network proposed must be able to support this amount of growth plus 20% more users for demand
spikes during holidays to be annualized at a flat 20% increase. The NOC must be able to be operated by
less than 10 operators per shift.

The second product that will be supported in the NOC, although it cannot be displayed on the main NOC
displays, is the new AppCloud product suite. This product line has 3500 users at present, including all of
Massive Comms 1500 users. The remaining 2000 users are comprised of government and private
contractor beta testers with Top Secret or better security clearance. AppCloud is available globally and
will provide a secure connection to the application suite that Massive Comm offers with the product
which is similar to Open Office Org or MS Office. The main caveat being that the system needs to be
secure and encrypted to DOD standards. The projected increase of users at launch is over 50,000 new
users in the first week to a maximum of 100,000 new users total by years end. The user base will
increase by 100% per year for each year thereafter. The system must be available 24/7/365 globally and
have good response times.

Detailed costing for ALL hardware, software, cabling, leases and services to satisfy the requirements is
essential for your bid to be considered. Detailed information regarding any/all bands, protocols,
estimated response times, infrastructure set up, locations or co-locations, or anything related to your
solution needs to be fully documented and enclosed to be considered.
