(NEW) QUESTIONS + ANSWERS Questions submitted through October 3, 2017

Q: Could you please confirm that students may change the material of the glass wall long the hallway from glass to gyp.
etc. as needed for their design?

A: There is floor to ceiling glass along the corridor and per the notes on the CAD drawing, feel free to modify for
patient privacy as needed (ie: film on glass or a covering of some sort); however, not change the wall material it shall
remain glass.

Q: In addition, confirm students may modify the location off the doors to the suite.

A: Yes, students may change the location of the doors to the suite to accommodate their design direction and they
should be able to defend their modification decisions.

Q: For physicians, page 6 says that they need a phone booth-type space for dictation and returning patient phone calls.
It also says that they need a docking station with dual monitors in non-patient spaces to complete charting and
paperwork. Must these be separate, or can the phone booth-type space contain their docking station and monitors?

A: Yes, that is permitted but not required.

1 NEXT Student Design Competition 2017

Q: If a docking station requirement is stated, but no monitor requirement is clarified, should we assume a single monitor
is needed? Example:. pg 6, Dietitian description.

A: If no statement of dual monitor, assume single.

Q: Should we design both the large conference room & work cafe area to accommodate community events of up to 15
people bi-monthly based on the following information from the client program or will community events only be held in
the work cafe.

A: Community events will be in the WorkCafe. The large conference room will primarily be used for internal purposes.

Q: The Large Conference Room (pg 9) states that it should seat 14 people, plus an additional 4 as needed. In the work
cafe the description states: "Provide an area that could be used to host groups of up to 10 for cooking demonstrations
and healthy eating workshops". however, on page 7 it states "You will also need to plan for educational events of up to
15 community members somewhere in the space where cooking demos, and lifestyle classes will be held bi-monthly in
the evenings- they will need seating, reconfigurable tables, and a projector. What is the maximum number of people
we should accommodate in the work cafe for a special event? (32 employees + ?) Could we be hosting a group as large
at 60+ people in this space at one time?

A: Please refer to the program. The square footage allocation for this space was intended to provide ample flexibility for
a variety of group sizes and different activities.

Q: In the open offices description, it says that no millwork should be used. Does this include architectural elements in
the open areas, or is the program only referring to no millwork in desk systems?

A: Millwork should not be used for work setting applications (ie: where someone is sitting/working). Our intent is to
have students use Steelcase Inc brand products wherever possible and use millwork as needed and with discretion.

Q: Lighting selections are required in every room, but in the description of many rooms it states that an RCP is not
required. (Only in the work cafe and open office area is an RCP required.) Should a complete lighting schedule be
integrated into the design submission to address all other rooms in the project? Or, would you really only prefer to see
an RCP for those two areas as stated in the client program? Finally is it ok to provide a complete RCP with coordinating
schedule to clarify how lighting issues are addressed throughout the project?

A: Yes, please provide a RCP for the required areas (WorkCafe and all open office areas) and provide a fixture
recommendation / lighting schedule for all other locations.

Q: NOTE: you answered the same question twice in your Q&A post on line - and gave a different answer each
time. Can you reduce this to one correct answer on the website Q&A?

- Q: On the bump out in the northeast corner of the building there are two lines. Should the students use A or
B for the shell of the building? A: Use B.
- Q: On the bump out in the northeast corner of the building there are two lines. Should the students use A or
B for the shell of the building? A: Use A.

A: Please reference the drawing provided above this question on the Q+A document that is posted on the NEXT
website. Note question 2 and question 3 are in different locations on the drawing (see Q+A questions submitted
through September 22). The answers as stated are correct.

Q: Is the Lifestyle Zone is supposed to be like a library. The description says that "The staff area would provide
information related to the newest medical research as well as information related to resources available to promote
their health and well-being." Which makes me wonder if it would be a library type situation.

2 NEXT Student Design Competition 2017

A: This space has flexibility in application. This is intended to be an informational and educational display not a room.
Per the program, it can be digital or analog or both. However, if the students design direction is to provide a library and
there is sufficient space this would be permitted.

Q: Is it possible to provide some kind of measurements besides the overall sq ft? For example --measurements between
columns?

A: The CAD plan is to scale. Please reference for dimensions.

Q: I understand there is already a spot for an intern as an employee. However, would it be ideal to plan space for a
volunteer or two as well? Having volunteered at a hospital before, this job can help staff and patients feel more relaxed
and that there is someone else who can handle comforting patients during busy hours.

A: If all other program requirements have been met, this would be permitted if there is enough space available and the
student can defend their design considerations.

Q: Do we use all of the hall that is located in the white area? Is there a total dimension for the shell of the building?

A: No, we do not have the shell dimension; however, the CAD file can be used for this. For this competition, the
hallway belongs to the landlord and is not in scope or to be modified.

Q: When specifying the Steelcase products into our design, can we can the Material color/texture on the product? For
example say there is an office chair that is red, can we specify that chair in one of the other colors available on their
website?

A: All material selections are listed per product on the Steelcase website. Note, you are also allowed to use COM fabric
(ie: customer own material). Students are encouraged to develop their own color palette. Also available for painted
surfaces, Steelcase has a Perfect Match program to apply any pantone color.

Q: Also, when reading through the other questions i found one that was answered twice but with opposite answers. The
question was 'on the bump out in the northeast corner of the building there are two lines. Should the students use A or
B for the Shell of the building'. One of the answers was A and the other was B so should we just use both as the shell?

A: Please reference the drawing provided above this question on the Q+A document that is posted on the NEXT
website. Note question 2 and question 3 are in different locations on the drawing (see Q+A questions submitted
through September 22). The answers as stated are correct.

Q: Does Steelcase have any recommendations on tables to be used for the Massage and Acupuncture rooms or are
these tables a specialty item?

A: We do not have recommendations for these tables. The students can research and select anything that meets their
design intent.

Q: Does Steelcase portfolio have any suppliers of flooring or lighting products?

A: Steelcase has a low profile raised access flooring system and we have a partnership with FLOS lighting. However,
these Steelcase solutions are NOT required to be used/specified for these solutions.

3 NEXT Student Design Competition 2017

Q: Can the resource center/ medical supply space be divided into two spaces? It seems unsterile to have packages and
medications in the same space. Please let us know if there is flexibility in this space.

A: It isnt required to be separate; however, if the students design direction is to separate these rooms that would be
permitted as long as they are adjacent spaces.

Q: It has been made clear that the material of the curtain wall facing the atrium cannot be modified accept for location
of doors. However, is this floor to ceiling glass on this wall?

A: Yes, there is floor to ceiling glass along the corridor and per the notes on the CAD drawing, feel free to modify for
patient privacy as needed (ie: film on glass or a covering of some sort).

Q: We know there is a ceiling height of 16 inside the suite from floor to underside of deck. But what about the
corridors; are there drop ceilings there for HVAC systems, etc. What is the height we should consider for them as they
appear in our sections?

A: Assume the corridor ceiling height is the same as the suite for the purpose of the competition. We do not have HVAC,
mechanical systems, etc. as part of the scope or requirements for this competition.

Q: Since the penthouse doesnt take up the whole 5th floor why are we unable to put skylights up there in the areas not
part of fifth floor?

A: While this could be feasible, we do not have the plans for the 5th floor and we want to remain consistent with our
response to a similar question (see set of questions from September 15) and we do not want to have students that
proceeded with this direction have to go back and rework their drawing or be put at a disadvantage for something that is
technically out of scope for this competition. Therefore, no skylights.

Q: What type of glass are the windows? Are they reflective, are they dark glass.

A: For the purposes of this competition, we will not specify the type of glass. This is up to the students discretion and
they should be able to defend their design direction with their choice of glass.

Q: We know that we have to bring water into the environment, therefore where are the plumbing chases located or can
we locate them where design dictates?

A: For this competition, these can be located where the design dictates.

Q: If there is a high demand for patients, would there be more than 2 nurses working? Research of Local Clinics have
stated that they normally have 2 nurses, however they would like more than that.

A: Assuming normal working hours for this office are between 8am 5pm, 2 nurses are sufficient per the program.

Q: In the large conference room, does seating for 14 include the minimum of the 4 people from the Portland team?

A: The room should be designed to accommodate 14 people with additional flexibility to add seats for 4 more seats on an
as needed basis. We suggest exploring all collaborative applications to accommodate flexibility (ie: it doesnt have to be
18 seats around a large table).

Q: According to the information shared in the package, there is 20% of customization that the students allow to apply in
the project. Could you please explain what will be covered in this 20%? For example, furniture, lighting, or materials?

A: This would be anything built (furniture related) that is not provided by one of the Steelcase brands (ie: reception
station, custom millwork, etc.)

4 NEXT Student Design Competition 2017

Q: The students found out that the columns in the project scope are not aligned. They are offset approximately 2 4
inches. Please confirm whether the locations of the columns are correct, or they are meant to be like this.

A: They are meant to be aligned. It appears (2) of the columns are slightly offset and the other others aligned. The
drawing may have been modified to reflect the actual built condition; however, for the purpose of this competition,
assume all columns are aligned.

Q: There is (1) Office Manager/Receptionist listed as Administrative Staff. There are space requirements for a
Receptionist as part of the 350-400sf Reception/Waiting Area. There are also space requirements for a Receptionist as
part of the Open Office/Individual Work Areas at up-to 48sf/each. Is the receptionist a SINGLE staff member with two
work spaces? Or are there actually (2) receptionists? Or is there something else we're missing? Could you please clarify
how the receptionist works and relates to these two different types of spaces?

A: There is only (1) receptionist and they should be included in the Reception/Waiting allocation and not the open
office/individual work area. The mention in the open office area was an oversight. Sorry about any confusion this
caused.

Q: The program claims that the height from finish floor to bottom of structure above is 16'-0", or 16' "clear." A previous
Q+A answer shows that the top of the 45-degree angled storefront is at 7'-6" nominally above the finish floor. This
would mean that there is another 8'-6" between the top of the window and the structure above, plus another
(approximately) 2'-3' for structure and roof and parapet. HOWEVER, the exterior building photographs that are available
online and in your previous Q+A responses show an exterior wall/parapet above that 4th floor sloped storefront that
appears to be shorter than the storefront. The exterior photographs appear to reflect a standard floor-to-floor that
would be closer to 12-14', not 18-19' as the competition brief suggests. Is there REALLY 16' clear in this existing
building's 4th floor?? Or is this an "ideal" number that you have provided in order to offer a variety of ceiling solutions?

A: Your dimensions are accurate to the real conditions; however, due to the limitations of natural light compared to
prior buildings in the competition, we wanted to provide optimal flexibility in the interior space for students to explore
their creativity in design considerations.

Q: CAD FILE - on the south end of the space there is a large dotted circle highlighting the exit stair and elevator combo.
Was there to be a note associated with that and/or is there a reason for the circle?

A: The circle is just highlighting that this is the patient entrance elevator. There is also a notation on the drawing and
PDF.

Q: WORKCAFE - During a cooking demonstration, will the attendees be participating in the prep/process or just the
leader of the demonstration?

A: Participants will not be participating in the preparation process just viewing.

Q: Would you envision the kitchen being used to prepare things like lunch/dinner/appetizers for client meetings; for
when corporate is in town; etc?

A: It could potentially be used for that activity on occasion (for small groups) because all the equipment would be
available; however, that is not the intended purpose. Please see the program document for intended use.

5 NEXT Student Design Competition 2017

Q: MASSAGE SPACES - Is there a specific purpose in having 2 chairs and a stool in the massage room?

A: The program document only states a requirement for a massage table and a seat for the

therapist.
too?

A: The requirements are that the solution meet ADA, Local Building Codes for Seattle, and/or meet any other
regulatory restrictions or guidelines.

Q: CONFERENCE ROOMS the program doesnt list requirements other than seating capacity and technology
requirements. Is it the designers discretion to provide storage, counter space and/or additional landing space for things
like refreshments, meeting documents, etc?

A: Yes to meet their desired/intended design intent.

Q: EDUCATION & LIFESTYLE ZONES how many people at one time should we anticipate accommodating in these
information/resource spaces?

A: These spaces are intended for the dissemination of information on a self-serve basis. I wouldnt anticipate more
than four or five people at any given time.

Q: As an instructor, it is a bit disheartening to show my students last year's winner, when it does not include any of the
REQUIRED reflected ceiling plans, nor elevations. Some of the runner ups also don't include this.....How can I explain this
to my students?

A: The presentations posted online are abbreviated presentations of the semi-finalists final presentations. These are
slides from the presentations the students used for their verbal presentations to the judges; however, they are not the
complete presentations submitted. We edited them down before posting. I can assure that each submission is
reviewed in detail by the panel of judges to ensure all requirements were met before selecting the semi-finalists and
honorable mention projects. I apologize for any inconvenience or misrepresentations we made.

Q: What is the vertical dimension of the window in the exam room?

A: I do not believe we instructed a window in the exam room; however, if this is on the exterior of the building it would
match the window dimensions of the building. Please refer to the window dimensions that have been confirmed on the
Q+A document that is posted on the NEXT website.

Q: Can you please confirm if the entry doors can be moved? The floor plan indicates that they can be modified, but
we would like clarification.

A: Please refer to the posted Q+A document on the NEXT website that addresses this question; however, yes, the doors
can be moved to meet the students design intent and they should be able to defend their design decisions.

Q: Do the students need to consider an additional space (a laboratory) for lab works? If so, what are the specifications
in regard to the square footage, etc?

A: No Lab services would happen at a separate location. There might be some small blood draw or samples that occur
here but they should be able to be processed at a bench in the work area.

6 NEXT Student Design Competition 2017

Q: In case of emergency, would patients be held at the facility overnight?

A: NO, this is no different than a medical office like visiting your general practitioner.

Q: As stated in the package, NEXT only requires 2 unisex restrooms. Could students add more?

A: If this meets the students design intent and they have enough room available, then yes, this would be permitted. Q:

Are patients allowed to have access to Workcafe as well? (or the space is only used by the employees)

A: The workcafe would be available to patients and employees; however, not available to the public accept for any
special events being hosted at the facility.

Q: As indicated on the floor plan, the entrance doors can be modified. Would that mean the students can move the
location of entrance doors?

A: Yes, this is permitted. Please review similar questions and response on Q+A document that is on the NEXT website.

Q: Could the Massage as well as the Acupuncture rooms be combined into one space but instead be separated
by dividing elements (such as a movable partition)?

A: Yes you could consider combining them but please note there may be times when each of those space is occupied by
a different patient (i.e. someone getting acupuncture and another person getting a massage so acoustic and visual
privacy would be critical.

Q: With the building being a B type occupancy, do the students need to provide 44 of clear egress path or 72 (as
stated in table 1020.2 in Seattle's building code)?

A: 44

Q: This is just to let you know that the provided view in the modified package still does not match the orientation of
the
building, as the west view (indicated in the package) is actually the north view, which look towards the downtown of
Seattle.

A: Please refer to Q+A document that has addressed this. The north view is indeed the view to the city.

Q: Individual locking storage for employee personal belongings (this can be added to the square footage allocation).
These spaces can, therefore, be greater than 48 SF depending on the type of storage used, correct?

A: Yes, correct.

Q: Can personal storage be grouped for these 20-25 people?

A: Yes, but note that they will need individual locking components for safety and security of their personal

belongings.

Q: Education file storage- approximately one 4 drawer lateral file. Does this refer to these 20-25 people or to the
Education & Lifestyle Zone?

A: Education and Lifestyle Zone

7 NEXT Student Design Competition 2017

Q: Receptionist will need a dedicated workstation with CPU, printer, monitors, and phone. She will also need an area
for a secure fax machine. The receptionist is not a part of this space allocation, correct? This information is in the
receptionist description but the secure fax machine is not listed there.

A: Correct, the receptionist is included in the waiting space allocation. Secure fax machine is required for the
receptionist.
Q: Are the windows full-height to the underside of the deck? The sill is at 2-6 and the deck at 16-0. Therefore, the
windows are 4-0 x 13-6, correct? with 2 mullions.

A: Please refer to the posted Q+A document on the NEXT website. This question has been answered.

Q: The restroom closest to our space is labeled shared building restroom. It appears to be a mens restroom. Is this
intentional?

A: The shared restrooms for the floor are for all tenants on the floor to use and are in the NOT IN SCOPE portion of the
floor plan. The base building plan we provided is slightly different than the current state on the floor where there are
separate mens and womens restrooms with six stalls each.

QUESTIONS + ANSWERS Questions submitted through September 22, 2017

Q: The program document and provided CAD file have conflicting window dimensions. The CAD file shows the mullions
as 4'11 1/4" OC, and a variety of mullion thicknesses. The third page of the write up lists mullions as being 2" thick and 4'
OC. Which dimensions should we use in our drawings?

A: For the purpose of this competition, use the location of the mullions as shown in the CAD file. Assume the width for
all mullions to be 2 wide.

Q: I am curious if you could better define the patient services provided at the NEXT medical office space. The program
indicates preventive care, but aside from this does not mention why a patient might be visiting this space. We would
be grateful if you could please provide more information on services offered and the patient population.

A: Blood pressure screening, cholesterol screening, depression screening, type2 diabetes screening, diet counselling,
immunizations, etc.

Q: I wanted to know if we are able to edit the northeast wall to make it an outdoor area with railing around it?

A: For the purposes of this competition, please stay within the footprint of the interior space. That would be an
unrealistic modification as a tenant of the building.

Q: I have attached an image of the exterior of the building. Please verify the project location.

8 NEXT Student Design Competition 2017

A: The floor with the angled windows is indeed the 4th floor. There is a penthouse level (5th floor) that isnt visible from
Google Earth on ground level and therefore this view is misleading. If you look at the address with an aerial view (in 3D
view) you can see the smaller footprint of the 5th level. See image below. Also, this building is currently under
renovation and the lower exterior windows are covered for protection in case you do not see the windows on Google
Earth.

Q: The students have questions about lines that are showing up on the floor plan. I have attached a floor plan outlining
three (3) questions:

9 NEXT Student Design Competition 2017

Q: Is the partition wall on the west of the project location 2'-6" thick? If not, what wall should the students use (A or B)?

A: This wall was originally in a different location and was copied/moved to this location to reduce the square footage.
Assume the wall is a typical 4 thick wall but the thickness is not shown (the intention is to use the B line as the
boundary for the space).

Q: On the bump out in the northeast corner of the building there are two lines. Should the students use A or B for the
shell of the building?

A: Use B.

Q: On the bump out in the northeast corner of the building there are two lines. Should the students use A or B for the
shell of the building?

A: Use A.

Q: The program mentions that the cafe will be used for cooking demonstrations and healthy lifestyle type
demonstrations, but it doesn't say WHO the audience/users are for those activities. Employees, patients, public or all of
the above?

A: The audience would be patients and their families who belong to the clinic would attend the cafe activities. There
could occasionally be small community outreach events where people from the local community would be invited to
attend.

Q: My junior-level students are participating in this year's Steelcase NEXT competition. Are there guidelines for the size
of digital boards the students should develop? Looking at previous winning submissions, it appears that 11x17 and
various sizes were used. Additionally, submission formats appear in more of a presentation style with research findings
on separate pages that lead to the design solution, often culminating in up to 15 different pages. With other student
competitions, we've seen a maximum of a number of larger scale boards (such as two 20" x 30", for
example). Therefore, I would like to clarify the digital boards expectations and format.

A: There are no expectations on the number of pages or the size of the pages and/or digital boards. As stated in the
competition documents, the submission is to be the equivalent of a design development presentation to your client,
NEXT, and the students goal, through your submission, is to convince NEXT that their design will provide them the work
environment they need to meet their goals. Students should consider the judges as the client and they will be reviewing
these submissions on a computer screen. Submittals must be in PDF format and be no greater than 20MB in size (no
min/max on number of pages). I would look at the winning and semi-finalist submissions from last year as a reference
(on the competition website); however, you are free to submit any format you wish as long as it accomplishes these
objectives stated above.

Q: Is this competition open to grad students? I have a grad student that is enrolled in my undergraduate senior studio
(the course that is doing the competition). Is she eligible to compete?

10 NEXT Student Design Competition 2017

A: If she is enrolled in your undergraduate studio and participating in class then yes, she is eligible to participate.
Q: Can you clarify registration? It says that students individually register by October 10, but we are required to self-jury
our students and only submit the best 2 entries. If the competition is due by December 8, we may not know who exactly
will be the best entry until the end of the semester when the students present to our jury. Do we still have all students
register even though there will be only two entries?

A: Yes, we like to have each student register (individually) who is participating in class on this project even though you
will only submit (2) by the deadline on 12/8. We do this to get demographic information regarding the ID programs
( number of juniors vs. seniors competing, the size of the studios per professor, male to female ratio ) as well as
understand how many total students participate in this competition. This gives us good information to see how many
designers will be entering the design community workforce and relative geographic regions.

Q: The document says there are 33 employees and our count comes up with 32? Which is correct?

A: You are correct. The count is actually 32 based on the Clinical Employees and Administrative Employees listed on
pages 6-7 of the Client Overview and Program document. We reduced (1) job function but failed to change the
count. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Q: More clarification on window measurements and the angle of them. (Students are very savvy today and they have
Googled the address given and they observed the angle is on a lower floor or the top floor. The other windows appear
full height and not 7 a.f.f. (See 3) & 4) below)

If you are reading prior Q+A, we should have worded a prior response about window height differently to say the top of
the window is approximately 7-6 from the top of the floor (beginning at 2-6 from floor and then rising another
approximate 5 (7 window at 45 degree angle). The glass starts at 2-6 above the floor and the glass is 7-0 tall and at a
45 degree angle.

Q: The student was asking if she was allowed to add on to the outside of the building. She wants to add a terrace that
can be reached from a few patient rooms. This will be at the same level as the NEXT Suite, so it will not be on the ground.
Please let us know if this is fine.

A: For the purposes of this competition, please stay within the footprint of the interior space. This would pose
a challenge to the exterior aesthetic with the angled windows on the 4th floor and unrealistic for this
competition.
Q: This student wants to clarify, where is the parking garage "across the street" from the NEXT suite building?. Does the
building provide both underground and on the ground parking spots? We looked at the google maps and wanted to
clarify.

A: The parking garage is integrated into the building it is on the ground floor (at street level ) and there is also a lower
level. The parking garage can be entered from either the east or south sides of the building via car.

Q: I did a quick sketch of the dimensions and it seems that the height does remain at approx.. 7-6 +/- with the
windows at a 45 degree angle. Ive drawn the short wall of 2-6 and the 7-0 window at 45 degrees and the height
remains at 7-5 3/8. Would someone confirm my understanding?

11 NEXT Student Design Competition 2017

A: You are absolutely correct on your measurements. We mistakenly overlooked the angle and impact on height. Your
sketch is spot on. The top of the window would be at the dimension you have identified.

Q: Could you clarify the window wall, sill height? Is the window 7'-0" overall or does that include drywall below the sill?
What is the measurement from the floor to the top of the window? What is the angle of the windows?

A: We should have worded a prior response about window height differently to say the top of the window is
approximately 7-6 from the top of the floor (beginning at 2-6 from floor and then rising another approximate 5-0
for a total of approximate 7-6. The glass starts at 2-6 above the floor and the glass is 7-0 tall and the window angle
is approximately 45 degrees. The bottom of the window is parallel with the wall and the glass does go beyond the outer
walls. In other words, if you were cutting a section through the plan the lines drawn in the plan are for the wall that goes
up 26 and then cants outward.

Q: The points on entry and exit may be changed? And would it be possible to pull the entry off the corridor? Introducing
a slight shape?

A: Yes, these design considerations would be permitted if it meets your students design intent and they can justify their
decisions. All changes would be required to meet all regulatory codes.

Q: We believe that the shower in one of the rest rooms would be for the clinicians and workplace workers, but please
confirm that this would not be a public facility.

A: The shower would be primarily for staff and workers but only for patients on an as needed basis. It would not be
open to the public or other building residents.

Q: It seems that for every room there is a strong desire to use Steelcases movable wall solutions, but is there a
percentage of moveable to constructed wall that would be required.

A: There is no requirement or ratio of movable wall to standard constructed wall. This is merely a suggestion because
students may not be familiar with the wall options from Steelcase vs. standard construction.

Q: Please describe typical exams that would be conducted in this facility.

A: The exams would consist of things that you would see your general practitioner for. Sore throat, medication
management, flu, minor cuts, etc.

12 NEXT Student Design Competition 2017

Q: Do we know if we have the true fourth floor plan so that we can get an idea of the outer angled glass's
dimension? We are assuming that the bottom of the window is parallel with the wall and the top end of the glass goes
beyond the outer wall.

A: The only floor plans we have for this site are the ones provided on the NEXT website. The bottom of the window is
parallel with the wall and the glass does go beyond the outer walls. In other words if you were cutting a section through
the plan the lines drawn in the plan are for the wall that goes up 26 and then cants outward.

Q: Last year we had so much light and this year, the natural light is extremely limited.

A: Each year the students are provided with different challenges that reflect the realistic design challenges they will face
once they enter the profession. Each plan has had its own unique challenges and opportunities and this competition
affords them the opportunity to take advantage of them with their design considerations.

Q: The document says there are 33 employees and our count comes up with 32? Which is correct?
A: You are correct. The count is actually 32 based on the Clinical Employees and Administrative Employees listed on
pages 6-7 of the Client Overview and Program document. We reduced (1) job function but failed to change the count.

QUESTIONS + ANSWERS Questions submitted through September 15, 2017

Q: It seems that perhaps the building's direction isn't correct. The view toward the city seems like it should be north
and not west. Would you be able to confirm?
A: You are correct the view towards the city is north. The arrow is pointing in the wrong direction. Thank you for
bringing this to our attention. We are having this corrected and will be uploading new documents shortly.
Q: Also, is there glass on the right side of the plan? This should be I think the building's east side or the side currently
marked as north. It doesn't show glass that would match the building in different photographs.
A: There is glass on the east side of the building. The lines do not show well on the PDF; however, glass is indicated on
the CAD drawing.

Q: We noticed some inconsistencies in some of the postings with respect to the area we are allocated to
design within. The CAD file online (showing 15, 983 sq. ft of usable area) and one is from the pdf. that is
posted online (11,977 sq. ft of usable area). Would someone please confirm which plan/ sq. footage we should
using?

A: We apologize, the SF shown on the (current) documents on the website is accurate (11,997 SF). We reduced down
because we found that there was a lot of excess SF available once all of the spaces from the program document and
circulation were placed into the plan. This new SF total will make it a much more reasonable plan without useless
wasted space and make the design challenges for the students more realistic.

Q: Do we have an interior elevation of our site? Could Steelcase provide one? I really would like to see a section as well.
A: Unfortunately, we do not have sections or elevations of this building nor have we provided sections in prior four
years of the competition. If your students look at the information on page 3 of the Contest Background document (also

attached) in the Building Information section, they can make conclusions regarding sections/elevations from the
information provided.

Q: What is the correct North? Students are telling me that it has been changed.
A: We did indeed make a change to the plan. The incorrect plan was inadvertently submitted (originally). I have attached
the correct PDF of the floorplan and the updated corresponding Client Overview and Program. The North direction was
incorrect and the overall SF was also incorrect. The documents attached (and what is currently on our website) are the
accurate documents. A correspondence regarding these changes was sent on 9/6/17 at 3:10pm CT.

Q: Is the fourth floor the top floor of the building?

A: No, there is a 5th floor above.

Q: Is the northeast portion of the building, where the floor plan bumps out, solid walls? From the views on Google that is
our assumption, but we would like to verify.

A: The part of the plan that bumps out in the northeast corner has solid walls (correct).

Q: What is the measurement from the floor to the top of the window? What is the angle of the windows?
A: Floor to the top of the window is 7-0. The windows are angled at approximately 45 degrees.
Q: Is there any requirements for the installation, location, and backup equipment for docking stations?
A: No, this can be at the students discretion.
Q: Are the supply manager and environmental service person sharing their laptops with their intern/s?
A: There is a note on page 7 of the programming doc indicating the Intern, Supply Mgr. and Environmental Services could
share 2 computers between them, but that the intern uses an iPad and a laptop. Based on this, the answer is yes.
Q: Do we need to provide a chair/stool for the massage therapist? If so, does her chair count as one of the required
chairs?
A: Yes, provide a stool. No, this doesnt count toward the total for workstation seats.
Q: Would there be any requirements or restrictions on installing or building any type of platform within the project
area? A: No requirements for this. The only restriction would be not affecting egress and ensuring you are adhering to
ADA and Local Building Codes for Seattle.
Q: Could the student change the material of the curtain wall and window (such as the material for the glass)?
A: No, that isnt a realistic solution. A tenant in a building typically wouldnt be able to change a material to suit
them. Potentially solutions would be something on the interior/tenant side like window coverings, window film if or build
screens/architectural elements on their side. This is at the students discretion and not a requirement for the
competition.
Q: Is the NEXT space located at the highest floor of the building?
A: No, there is a 5th floor above this floor.
Would students be allowed to design skylights, or any type of roof openings to enhance daylighting?
A: Not applicable with a floor above.

Q: Can occupants access to the staircase that placed just outside of the NEXT scope, located at the left side of the
project area?

A: There are two stairs in the scope and the main building stairs are accessible for everyone. We are not completely
sure which stair you are referring to for this? Would you please mark the PDF regarding the stairs you are questioning
and please send back to us for further clarification?

Q: Would children be a prominent part of the client population?

A: There would occasionally be a child accompanying a parent on a visit. Expect an average of 3-5 children occupying
the space per month.
Q: What would "healthy lifestyle education" relating to community events include?
A: For example, smoking cessation, cooking demonstrations, meditation classes, tips for stress management, etc.
Q: What does the statement, " Encourage cross generational mentoring"- apply to? (Patient- Health practitioner,
Patient- Patient, Health Practitioner- Health Practitioner...?)

A: Health practitioner to health practitioner.

Q: The idea of a "mobile social worker" is interesting yet somewhat hard to envision. Could you describe what space
needs the mobile social worker would need? What privacy needs would they have?

A: They would need a place for meeting with different clients in a relaxed setting with acoustic privacy and
they may be meeting with several family members at once. They would also need places to return phone calls
with privacy as well. When they arent meeting with clients they could be working anywhere in the (the
WorkCafe, a shared workspace, or even offsite. They are primarily working on their laptop and phone
throughout the day when not meeting with clients.
