INTRODUCTION

Presentation and role play is a compulsory project which is included in our course of theory
and practical in teaching business. We are chosen to applying discussion methodology to
present the mock teaching and learning process. The mock lesson is developed to determine
our understanding and ability to apply the main idea relating discussion methodology. The
course is to recognize students abilities to stimulate and creatively apply those strategies as
well as discuss issue, strength and weaknesses of discussion method in real classroom. We
chose advertise as our subject content which is included in commerce syllabus of form five in
mainstream education system.

OVERVIEW OF DISCUSSION METHODOLOGY

Discussion is defined as conversation or debate concerning particular topic.

Discussion is situation wherein students, or student and teacher, converse to information,
idea, or opinion or work to resolve a problem. These student-centered strategies are
encountered when student are active in processing information, defining problem, and
understanding different points of view. A whole-class discussion, small-group discussion and
pair discussion are forms of discussion method. There have five types of discussion which is
debate, seminar, brainstorming, forum, and buzz.

When a teacher conducted a role play which base on discussion methodology, she or
he should reflecting on discussion principles to apply in classroom. Teacher should select the
topic based on student experience, ability and interest. Aim of discussion should be clear and
explain before begins. The chairman and secretary should elect among student. Teacher
should inform about discussion method and procedures before activity started. Teacher
should use facilitating technique to ensure actively participating. Teacher should respond to
each students learning needs while maintaining the groups interest and attention. It also is
important to distribute participation widely while also retaining the enthusiasm of eager
volunteers. An additional challenge is allowing contributing while still maintaining the focus
on the lesson. Students are encouraged to record all relevant ideas and teacher will be
summarized at the end of the session. Finally, reinforce student to take part, appreciate ideas
and opinion, and encourage participating actively in future discussion.

1
Teacher should consider characteristic of discussion, such as interaction pattern, group
size and composition, group arrangement, role of teacher and physical arrangement when she
or he want to conduct a discussion in classroom. Good discussion determined by good leader,
topic, environment, reflection and suitable material uses.

There have five stages of discussion. The stages start with planning, introduction
stage, discussion stage, wind-up stage and finally move to conclusion stage. In planning
stage, teacher should determine the suitable discussion topic according to the learning
objective, pupils ability and interest. She or he should prepare the required materials and
facilities for discussion. In introduction stage, teacher will explains the aim of discussion,
dive the group, appoint chairman and secretary for each group, and arrange table and chairs
in suitable condition. Hence, in discussion stage, the chairman encourages the group member
to voice out his opinion and secretary takes down the opinion put forward. Group are
dissolved and students sit back as usual in wind-up stage. The secretary of each group plays
the role as reporter to present the result in front of the class. Then teacher guides student to
make adjustment in summing up their reports. Finally, as conclusion stage, teacher will
summarizes the results of group and gives suitable comments. Student will ask student to
record all relevant and important point in their note book.

We can obtain good results by having good discussion. Discussion can promote
knowledge retention; have higher order thinking skills, positive attitudes change, enhanced
moral reasoning and increase motivation among students and teachers as well. However,
discussion is failed if poorly conducted; become boring when learners are not ready or
reluctant to participate, dominated by few student, learner less motivated, and or learner do
not mature enough to engage in discussion.

As conclusion, discussion in the classroom can lead to greater student understanding

but this does not automatically happen. Discussion can fruitful when the teacher is clear on
the reasons for conducting discussion. Discussion method will create an excitement and
positive learning spirit among the students.

2
MOCK TEACHING AND LEARNING PROCESS

We will assign to conduct a role play in classroom with mock students. Teacher will
start with introduction set about the topic. Set of induction activities planned by the teacher
has successfully guide students to produce learning topics of the day. Teacher used
demonstrations method in the beginning of the teaching to stimulate student interest in
learning something new. Through this method, the teacher has succeeded in raising curiosity
to students and indirectly to attract the attention of the students towards the learning of the
day. The teacher plays an important role for information technology across the curriculum,
teachers have been providing teaching aids in order to enhance the effectiveness of teaching
and learning. Teachers use a power point presentation that has been prepared to explain the
learning content. This approach is not only dull pupils, it also can create conducive conditions
in the course of teaching and learning in the classroom.

Next is a group activity. Students are divided into four groups out of 30 students and
prepare the tools for the activities. Teachers request a representative from each group to come
forward to choose the media and products through teaching aids provided on the "Wheel of
mind". After that, the teacher gives instructions to all groups before the group activity carried
out. Each group will draw their media and explain how they will promote their product with
the media through mind mapping concept. Teachers reminding students to use elements of
discussion during group activities conducted. The students were actively involved in group
activities. Each of group members has to work together to produce interesting and attractive
outcome. This is a very good moral value and need to be nurtured among students.

Time given for discussion activity is 20 minutes. After that, the teacher asked the
representative to patch their work in front of a white board. Teacher request three
representatives from each group to present the results of each group's work in front of the
class. Each group was given five minutes to make a presentation. When an error in group
work, teachers act quickly to provide guidance and assistance to the group and also give
positive reinforcement to other groups.

3
After the presentation, teachers assess student understanding by introducing "score A
box" to students. Each group is required to submit three representatives to answer the
questions. Teacher provides two questions to each group and they must respond within three
minutes. Elements found in "score A box" is if the answer given is correct lights will flash
and buzzer will sounds. Students are allowed to discuss before choosing the correct answer.
Teachers make the score marks to evaluate the answers from each group. Finally, teacher will
open the Q&A session and summaries the lesson as a conclusion of the topic.

4
OBSERVATION AND REFLECTION

By overall, students are actively participating in discussion within 45 minute of

teaching and learning process. They are cooperate to develop a drawing about media and
product and develop a mind map about definition, function, strength, weaknesses of the
media chosen, and they are also need to come out with other media correlated with the real
media that they choose.

From our view, most of the students are excited and high motivation to attain the goal
of discussion by showing their commitment in the group activity, and as our expectation
some of them are really passionate and enjoy in giving and sharing their idea in order to
complete the task given. Each group members come out with their own ideas, and their
comparing and gathering all the ideas of the group members, and their team leader choose the
best answer that related and suitable based on the questions given. Finally they altogether
express those ideas through Mind Map, and in our view, they succeed to create those task
attractive and creatively.

After student finish their discussion, the student must present their task in front of the
classroom. All group need to stick their mah-jong paper on the whiteboard, therefore, we
have found that there were four different types of attractive mind mapping produce by each
group. Three students represent their group to explain their understanding and knowledge
about the product and media that they have been done. The audience have pay attention while
their friends presenting. The teacher gives a positive feedback to encourage the presenter for
what they have done.

After group presentations, teacher will introduce Score A box to students. The
purpose of score A box is to evaluate student knowledge and understanding about the
content and encourage them to collaboration in problem solving. 3 students for every group
come in front to answers the questions given. Every group has given 2 questions randomly
which selected from topic covered and discuss to find right answer from the topic within one
minute. From our view, student has achieved objective and able to use their thinking skills in
order to reach our targeting level. Therefore, they can relate and recall the previous lesson

5
and knowledge to answering the question given and the same time enhance sense of
cooperation and responsibilities in order to find solution or solve problem instantly.

In the other sites, from our observation, certain student are struggle to participate and
dont have enough brave to step up in the group. They are less motivated to participate and
less effort in order to voice ups their opinion. Teacher will encourage those student by
persuade and convinced that activities are important for their learning at the end of the
teaching session and the other hand hope they will show their determination in future or next
classes.

As conclusion, from our activity in the classroom, we can trace students abilities and
talent in effort to existing in the group. They encouraged giving ideas, opinion and suggestion
to resolve any problem or fulfil the task given with group members.

6
FEEDBACK AND RECOMMENDATION

At the end of our Role Play session, in order to improve our teaching technique or in
creating more effective and interesting learning activity, we open the flour for anyone who
likes to give us any comments or suggestions relating to activities in the classroom. Based on
our understanding, there is some constructive feedback or complimentary from our lecturer
and the audience. We also received negative responds about certain part of our learning
process activities.

There are few audiences who not really agree about our teaching activities. Aisyah
Mansor said too many activities need to be done. It shows that some of the audiences
cannot catch-up or confuse when too many activities done at one time. Negative respond
from Radziah By using Score-A Box not all audience involved. It also means that the
activities encourage audiences to not to pay attention and do their own activities. Due to
Score-A Box activities done, most of the audience mention that our group should provide
rewards to those group get the highest score. There are several audiences said that too many
activities performed in a time cause the class to be too noisy because all the audience are
racing to submit their answers and get points. Besides, some say the concept of 'Score A Box'
cannot be applied or used in the classroom with students who are weak in terms of learning
and understanding. It is because students can get easily bored and their attention will be
deviate to other things especially when they cannot understand what they need to do during
the activities. Puan Rohaya said, we have only one moral value in lesson plans that have been
provided. There ought to be four values in a lesson plan for teaching and learning process,
which lasted for 45 minutes. All these negative responses we will take it positively and we
hope that it will not affect the effectiveness of teaching and learning process that we have
already present.

From the positive side, Ainabella said very attractive and effective activities, we
should also practice it on other subjects. We conclude that she able to fully understand on
the subtopic that we try to deliver through our classroom activities (group discussion). It
shows that there is some audience are really interested and enjoying using our activity or
learning method to become their new learning strategies in future. Furthermore, they also
impress with our Score-A Box that can attract students interest toward our Pop Quiz

7
session, from their point of view, Score-A Box is the method or instrument in the learning
process to identify students level of understanding.

Other than negative feedback from Puan Rohaya, she also praised that our group can
encompass all kinds of discussion through Score-A Box activities. She also mentioned the
intonation of our voice was loud and strong as well as the instructions given to the viewer
clear and easy to understand. Loudly, students can hear what is communicated by the teacher
clearly and help pupils' understanding of learning. Volume also shows firmness in delivering
something. Teacher volume can also draw attention to the substance of students to focus my
studies regardless of other disorders. When the teacher asks a question, students can hear
clearly and respond properly demonstrate their understanding of the service delivered.
Assertiveness is contained in volume when delivering lessons, and this situation will makes
the students more respect for teachers.

Strengths
First, elements in the discussion itself can encourage all students to participate in the
same activities and thus help reduce the loss of concentration in the classroom. Second,
media drawing activities and products can give a clear picture to the audience on how the
promotions play an important role in informs the presence of a product in the market place.
Next, the activity was a mind map, where it can describe the types of advertising that can be
done by companies to advertise their products to customers. In a Score-A Box activities,
audience are required to present the answers they get in front of the class, and we found that
through these activities, in turn will help audience to increase their level of confidence. Then,
Score-A Box activities can also increase the activity of high competitiveness in themselves
because they are racing to produce the right answers to get the highest scores. By doing these
activities, it also enable us to gain the attention of the audience easily and quickly as they
would give spontaneously actions against our instructions given. Since audience have to
answer quickly and correctly, indirectly, this activity allows each student show their ability to
think quickly and be able to submit their creative ideas to help the team get the highest marks.
We also feel that these activities can foster teamwork as they must work together to ensure
they get the right answer and to get the highest marks. Indirectly this can be applied while
they were in the working world where most of the jobs that are available now are working in
a group.
Limitations
8
First, elements in the discussion itself will cause some of the ideas will be rejected by
the members of their respective groups for the occurrence of differences of opinion and
perception, causing a conflict among themselves. Second, media and product drawing
activities also can not involve all audience and this problem will prevent audience to give
their ideas creatively. Mind map drawing activities will cause each group only know the role
of the media only because they have been given different media. Next, done too much
activity at one time led Score-A Box cannot be used by all students because of insufficient
time.

Other barrier, are accuracy in a timely manner. Punctuality is important to ensure the
teaching process runs smoothly and seamlessly. Based on the daily lesson plan has been
made, it was found that the time used to run teaching steps is incompatible. This is due to
disturbances and there are other things that cause more time taken to perform a step.
However, the overall teaching time is not too affected and can be run well.

Recommendations
Throughout the teaching and learning process, a lot of things we face as we need to
ensure audiences understand and follow the instructions properly. We also have to make sure
that everything we do according to the given time and also ensure the instructions are
followed correctly. We need to ensure the process of teaching and learning according to what
was planned in the lesson plan. Although some audience show reaction seems they do not
understand what we are trying to say but we're working to make sure they get what we have
prepared. Finally we successfully completed the role play session despite some negative
reactions we have obtained but in the end we can accept with an open heart.

In order to increase the quality of our teaching in the future, we consider all comments
and suggestions from the audience as constructive comments in repairing our weaknesses. We
also take the compliments as a reward for us because put this effort to finish up the role play
session and take this experience as the most valuable memories before we move on to the real
world of teaching and learning. After post-mortem has been carried out, we agreed to
improve some elements in our teaching activities where these activities should be carried out
in two different times. Media and product drawing, mind map and presentation activities can

9
be conducted on the first session and activities for Score-A Box can be conducting on the
second session. Therefore, the time management problems can be overcome or improved to
meet the expectation.

We also intend to raise the current monitoring activities are carried out and at the
same time creating a student-friendly. This can make it easier for students to ask questions
without having to call the teacher to come to their place. We also plan to apply more than one
value in oneself audience to produce a more meaningful learning process. This value can use
to meet the expectation from audience and help to improve our lesson plan.

As a teacher, giving instruction is part of our daily activities and we have to make sure
that the students understand and follow the instructions. So, we need to improve in terms of
giving direction to the audience, where we need to give instructions clearly so that all
students are able to understand what is to be communicated and thus can make an activity
according to what we had ordered. The feedback from audience is very important because it
will show whether they understand our instructions or not. We need to provide a note to the
audience for the purpose of mind mapping and at the same time it can be used as their
reference in the future.

We hope that our teaching and learning process in the future does not have any
problems and will be better, interesting and effective either in terms teaching process of a
teacher or an understanding of a student. This most valuable experience will be kept in our
mind because it will be useful one day when we move to the next level of our life stage.

CONCLUSION

10
We glad that this course gives us new experience and knowledge in order to be good
teacher in future. As a teacher, we should have clear mind and feeling, full of commitment,
momentum, leadership skills and accountability to be excellent teacher. To achieve, as stated,
we can adapt the methodology we taught in classroom activities and exposed with classroom
environment. Hence, we encourage student in cognitive development and the same maintain
good behavioural in learning. We are so excited to facing new dimension in our career.
Being a professional teacher is not easy as thought, we must fulfil our self with appropriate
knowledge and well preparation before enter in the real world of teaching. Recently, a lot of
story about a good teacher became bad teacher. The student nowadays is known as gen y
cannot be treated as 10 years before. They must be taught creatively by a creative teacher.
The teachers without a creative skill will discourage the student motivation and will effected
student future in that subject taught. From teacher centred to the student centred. A variety of
teaching method has been introduce to attracted student attention and let the student learn in
variety of situation as objective to make student has a meaningful learning.
