Before Reading The Peal Like all of Steinbeck’s work, The Pearl is a masterful account of the human condition. Based on a Mexican folk tale, the work is considered a novella (a short novel). Published in 1947, the first edition contained illustrations from renowned Mexican muralist Jose Clemente Orozco (see above image and the other graphic images throughout the unit guide).
