Goal: The student will learn the basic concepts in classical physics, understand the the
influence of physics in their daily lives and be able to and predict the outcome of physics
based problems using their acquired knowledge.

Course Description:
The course is divided into six units. Each unit is approximately two weeks.

Unit 1
1-D Kinematics: Using words, equations, numbers and diagrams to describe the motion
of objects in one dimension.

Unit 2
Newtonʼs Laws: Newtonʼs laws explained and its practical uses explored.

Unit 3
Vectors: Motion and forces in two Dimensions: Explain and analyze motion in two
dimensions.

Unit 4
Momentum and its Conservation: The law of conservation of energy introduced and
applied to problems.

Unit 5
Work, Energy and Power

Unit 6
Circular Motion and Satellite Motion: Newtonʼs law of Universal Gravitation.

Required Materials:
Notebook
Folder
Pen/Pencil

Grading Criteria:
Formative-75%
Summative-25%
Formative examples: Labs, participation, webquests, article reviews, skill
demonstrations, group work and classroom warm-ups.

Summative examples: Tests, quizzes and reports.

Grades will be entered into the GO system weekly. Students are encouraged to check
their grades often. Information on how to sign up for the GO system can be found on the
CCPS website and the class website https://urspace.wikispaces.com on the grading
page.

Explanation of Go abbreviations.

NG = (no grade, student is exempt or grade is not entered)

00 = (student may make up the assignment)
0 = (student may not make up assignment) in GO.

A chart explaining the alphanumerical breakdown can also be found on the grading
page of our class website https://urspace.wikispaces.com.

Cheating/Plagiarism
Cheating and plagiarism are serious offenses and will not be tolerated. Any student who
is found to be cheating on homework, a quiz or a test shall receive a failing grade or
zero, shall forfeit the right to make-up the assignment, quiz or test, and shall be dealt
with by administration according to the Student Handbook. Additionally, any classroom
material submitted for evaluation determined to be plagiarized shall be given a failing
grade or zero, shall forfeit the right to make-up the assignment, and shall be dealt with
by administration. Be aware that copying from another student or allowing another
student to copy from you is not acceptable on any assignment or in any situation other
than teacher-assigned group work. This behavior is called cheating, not helping, and will
result in the procedures described above.

Attendance and Make-up Policy:

Any student absent for reasons coded as Lawful Causes will have the privilege of
making up work for full credit.

• The student must meet with me the day they return to school to get the work (often
this work is available online).
• Generally the student will have two school days to make up the work, unless there are
extenuating circumstances and we mutually agree that the time to make up the work
should be extended.
• If a student absent for Lawful Causes fails to make up work within the two day period
or mutually agreed upon period, he or she will receive a grade of “F” for each undone
assignment.
Any student absent for reasons coded as Unlawful Causes will have the privilege of
making up work lowered one letter grade below the grade earned.

• The student must meet with me the day they return to school to get the work.
• Generally the student will have two school days to make up the work, unless there are
extenuating circumstances and we mutually agree that the time to make up the work
should be extended.
• If a student absent for Unlawful Causes fails to make up work within the above
mentioned time frame, he or she will receive a grade of “F” for each undone
assignment.

Assessment Retake Policy:

Any student who wishes to retake a summative assessment may do so provided:

• They submit corrections within two school days of receiving the graded summative
assessment.
• They understand they will be assessed a 10% penalty off the earned retake
summative assessment grade.
• Each summative assessment may only be retaken once.
• In the event the retake score is lower than the original score, the higher of the two
scores will be entered into the GO system

Students may not retake a formative assessment unless there are extenuating
circumstances.

Teacher Contact Information: If you would like to meet in person I am more than
happy to meet with you regarding your child, email is the best way to get a hold of me to
set up an appointment.

Behavior Expectations: It is impossible to have a rule for every situation that may
come up in the classroom. I do have three expectations that address 99% of the
questions regarding behavior.

Students are expected to:

1. Take care of themselves

2. Take care of their classmates
3. Take care of the school

All EHS rules are enforced in my classroom. If it is a school rule, it is my rule. No

exceptions.
Late Work Acceptance Policy:
Late work will be accepted with a one letter grade penalty off the grade earned for each
school day past the deadline. Late work will not be accepted after three school days
after the due date.

Class website:
Our class website address is https://urspace.wikispaces.com. This website has a wealth
of information including: class notes, vocabulary worksheets, electronic flash cards,
assignments, class calendar, webquests, article review sheets, links and much more. I
certainly understand that not everyone has access to the internet from home so I make
every effort to allow students to use the site during class. If you need something in print
form (parent or student) please let me know and I will provide it for you. I encourage all
my students and parents to visit the site and our blog http://uleauscience.edublogs.org
for all the latest news and events.
