The Present Situation

The depression on the Continent has increased in

intensity since yesterday and its centre now lies
over or near Oldenburgo The highest pressure is
still on the Atlantic off our west and north-western
coasts.

The General Outlook

The barometrical changes are at present slight,

,but they show that the depression is still increasing
in depth, but afford no' indication of its direction
of movement. With the prevailing pressure dis
tribution, however, it will pr.obabiy travel eastward
of north-eastward, its influence over the North Sea
and England ceasing very gradually.

The Present Situation

The depression that lay over Oldenburg yesterday

moved westward during the day and is now centred off
the coast of Norfolk near Yarmouth, The changes in
pressure over the British Isles and their immediate
neighbourhood are very slight and irregular, but a
decided fall is in progress over the western portion
of the

The General Outlook

The very slight and irregula.r changes in pressure

over this country seem to indicate that the de
pression will begin to disperse rather than to travel
away,, The fall of the barometer beyond the Eastern
shores of the North Sea is probably indicative of the
development of a depression which will prolong the
regime of the Northerly wind in this country and pre
vent the es^ablish^lent of summer-like conditions.

The Present Situation

The depression of yesterday noved slowly

southward and became less deep during the day, while
.X, another disturbance rcovcd westward from Denmark,
This is now centred between East Angiia and Holland
and is causing a prolongation of the rainy weather
/*, over the eastern and south- eastern districts
generally. The high pressure on the Atlantic
appears to have undergone little IDodification >

The General Outlook

v__X8 ' The changes in pressure afford little indica

C: ^ depression, but it seems probable that it will
continue to affect, the winds and weather for some

AUGUST

NOTE.The areas over which rain ftll

within the U b ''.irs from " a.m. are
shown an this chart )>y (tippling.

Tho Present Situation at 7ho August 5th,19^

The depression which came from the eastward

is now shown centred near Havre, and the barometer
.is relatively low over Prance generally The high
est readings are in an anticyclone over Northern
Scandinavia, but the barometer is nearly as high over ||
the Azores region A depression still exists to the
westward of Ireland Pressure is now steady or
increasing slowly in nearly all regions, and the
depression over France is still decreasing in intensity
During the ensuing 24 hours there was little
change in the actual height of the barometer and the
general distribution of pressure. Over France and
south eastern England there was a slight rise and over
Scotland and Ireland a slight fall, so that pressure
became rather more uniform. Much sea fog prevailed
along the eastern seaboard of Great Britain and at
some places on the western coasts .

Notes on the Situation at 7h, on August 5bh

Pressure is now very uniform over the British

Isles, Over Scandinavia there is still an anticyclone
of moderate intensity ? the highest reading indicated
being .1023 8 mb, at Hernosand, In the Azores
pressure has risen to 1027 mb. at Santa Cruz. The
Icelandic depression hap advanced somewhat towards the
north east. Calms or light NE airs prevail over
these Islands generally, but in the north-west the
wind is southerly Coastal fog is still widespread
Dull conditions prevail in the east, fair or fine
weather on our western coasts
During the ensuing twenty- four hours the barometer
fell considerably in the western districts under the
influence of low pressure out in the Atlantic, rain
falling in Ireland. Anticyclonic conditions
continued over the North Sea, however, wif,h persistent
fog on parts of the coast.

The Present Situation

A depression which in slowly spreading in from
C> the Atlantic has caused a southerly wind to prevail
over the whole of Ireland and across to Holyhead.
Bain is falling at BlacKsod Point and weather is
.dull in Ireland. Over the rest of the country winds
are very light and weather fine, but fog is very pre
valent on our East and South-East coasts, and in the
English Channel. A belt of relatively high pressure
stretches fron tha Azores to the Say of Bivjay,

'"? The Gene-raj. Outlook

The indications pcunt V> the depression spreading
-r9 slowly eastward or north--eastward over the British
Isles with So or Siff. vrinds and less settled weather.

V The Present Situation

The general distribution of pressure is undergoing

very little modification, the depression which
appeared over the North-Eastern quarter of the At
lantic on Sunday remaining stationary, but expanding
slowly across the Western half of Europe, so that
the pressure gradient over an extensive region has
become slight. Winds from some Southerly points are
general, but as a rule they are very weak, few
localities feeling so much as a moderate breeze.
Cloudy dullness is in the ascendant, with showers
at some of the western stations, and much fog,
expocially down the east coast of Britain,

The General Outlook

With the continued eastward expansion of the

Atlantic depression the conditions are likely
to. remain of an unsettled type over the British Isles
generally.

R O.K. LEMPFERT. Superintendent, forecast Division.

THE,..JPBESENT SI TUATICN.

j The central space of the Atlantic depression

arrived over the Irish Sea last evening, and has
remained stationary since, but it has become deeper,
On its northern side the barometer continues to
faii f with light breezes from Easterly directions
and dull to rainy weather. The anticyclone over
Azores region is maintainccL In the south
couth-west pressure is increasing, the gradient
also increased, and the South-Westerly wind
consequently become fresh or strong, with fair
ine ci.ear weather

THE... GENERAL OUTLOOK,.

From the tendency of the pressure variations
it seems probable that the depression wii] irift
slowly in some northerly direction, and the un
settled type of conditions will be maintained in
our neighbourhood for a time.

Present Situation
The very slow moving depression which during the
past five days has ruled the winds and weather over
the greater part of the area under observation , is now
centred over Scotland , its depth not having been
materially altered during the past 24 hours. It is
occasioning a fresh SHy* breeze over the eastern
portion of the English Channel and t',long the south
east coast, but in other regions light breezes from
points between SW. and SE . or E* predominate. The
weather in a variable state, from fine to dull, with
local showers, and some coast mist or fog,
\
The General Outlook
Ex ;epting on our extreme western coasts the baro
meter shows a general upward tendency, the tendency-
iing for the depression to drift slowly out to the
being
Atlantic, but its ultimate destination is very
doubtfulo It will probably maintain the changeable
type of weather for the present
