LIKE TO SEE SOME SILENT MOVIES?
The Village Picture Show movie theater will host silent film accompanist and historian Ben Model on
Aug. 21 as he presents a program of four comedy shorts from the silent film era.
As he has during past appearances at the independent movie theater, Model will accompany the movies
live on piano with his own original scores, just as was done 90 years ago and the shorts will be presented
on film.
In “The Cure” from 1917, Charlie Chaplin goes to a spa retreat for a water cure and tangles with a
masseuse, spa guests and some spiked well water. In “The Goat,” from 1921, Buster Keaton is mistaken
for an escaped criminal and finds himself on the run everywhere he turns.
In “His Wooden Wedding,” from 1925, Charley Chase is tricked into calling off his nuptials on his
wedding day by a rival and winds up on a cruise ship looking for the “Dhulip Diamond.” Stan Laurel and
Oliver Hardy star in “Big Business,” from 1929. In the film, the pair tries their hand at selling Christmas
trees and run afoul of a customer who refuses to buy one of their evergreens, destroying his house in the
process.
Model, who has a website at www.silentfilmmusic.com, is a silent film pianist and organist at the
Museum of Modern Art in New York City and accompanies silent films at a variety of theatres and film
festivals, as well as at schools, churches and universities, around the U.S.
The shorts will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the movie theater on Depot Street in Manchester.

STATE’S ATTORNEY CONTEST HEATS UP.
Marc D. Brierre, Rutland County State’s Attorney debated his opponent for his office, Katie Smith,
during “On The Air With Tim Philbin” on WSYB recently. They shared the same office for years –
worked together as equals and then as head prosecutor and deputy. They are even running for office
under the same political affiliation. But for all the similarities between the two candidates running for
state’s attorney in Rutland County this year, the differences between Marc Brierre and Katie Smith
are at times even more striking. For starters, there’s their backgrounds.
Brierre e served as a deputy state’s attorney. He was appointed the head of the five prosecutor office
in September 2009 to replace former State’s Attorney James Mongeon. He also served in the Judge
Advocate General Corps for 28 years while in the U.S. Army and Vermont National Guard. Smith
worked alongside Brierre as a deputy state’s attorney in Rutland for three years before leaving the
office in April. Prior to that, she worked in the public defenders office for four years. While she can’t
match Brierre’s background in terms of years, Smith said, she more than pulled her weight by handling
up to one-third of the case load in the prosecutor’s office. “I don’t think experience need only be
measured in numbers of years, it’s what you do with those years,” she said. During her time in the
prosecutor’s office, Smith predominantly handled cases involving motor vehicle offenses and animal
cruelty complaints. But she also assisted the more senior prosecutors in major cases. In her final trial
in Rutland, she served as co-counsel with Brierre in a second-degree murder case that ended with a
guilty verdict.
Brierre’s trial history is broader, although he too generally served as co-counsel on major cases when
Mongeon was in office. His first year as head prosecutor has added a number convictions to his track
record.
Since September, Brierre said. “I think we’ve done well.” But Smith, who is responsible for some of
the office’s success, said she believes she could take a good office and make it better. good luck to both.
