On Wednesday, 11 October 2017, Nafasi Art Space and MuDa Africa, both
Tanzanian non-profit cultural organisations, participated in the official signing
ceremony for their agreements with the Royal Norwegian Embassy. The ceremony
took place at Nafasi Art Space, located at Eyasi Road, Mikocheni B. The guests of
honour were H.E. Hanne-Marie Kaarstad, Ambassador of Norway, and Godfrey
Mnegereza, Executive Secretary of BaSaTa, the national arts council. The Royal
Norwegian Embassy has committed to providing 3-year grants to both
organisations as core-funding support for the organisations long-term strategic
plans.

Nafasi Art Space is a contemporary art centre and creative hub that was founded in
2008 and hosts more than 60 member artists. Open to the public, Nafasis art
programs are aimed at youth, low-income communities, women, and other
marginalized groups who have limited opportunities to enjoy the arts.

Of the cooperation agreement, Nafasis Managing Director Rebecca Corey said,

We are deeply grateful to the Royal Norwegian Embassy, who have agreed to
provide core support to our strategic plan for 3 years (2017-2020), which will help
us cover the basic costs that keep Nafasi running, as we work to protect and
strengthen artistic and cultural rights for both artists and audiences in Tanzania.

As part of their long-term strategic plan, Nafasi Art Space aims to build a strong
and thriving art sector in Dar es Salaam, by increasing art production, providing
opportunities for education and exchange to artists, boosting the visibility of
contemporary arts, and building Nafasi into a more sustainable and financially
independent creative hub.

The contract signing ceremony was met with great joy by both the members of the
panel and the audience. To quote her excellency, the Norwegian Ambassador
Hanne-Marie Kaarstad, Art and Culture is crucial in building vibrant societies. The
support being granted to these top art organizations, will be crucial in the
sustained development of the contemporary arts and culture in Tanzania.
