The retarder operation begins at the initial movement
of the brake pedal apx 1 cm. It operates from an electrical signal not from air which is delivered to the brakes when depressing the pedal further.
Remember light pedal application will give you the
most from your retarder. Heavy pedal application will result in the brakes working more than the Retarder ! Optimum Retarder Use - With hand control stalk.

Volvo recommends that the control stalk is primarily
at position A.
NEVER leave the retarder position in 0 (off) position!!
Other positions 1, 2 or 3 should only be utilised in
steep or hilly terrain/ roads and should be returned to A position once level driving conditions return.
