The LEEP Campaign
The energy use for lighting parking facilities until recently was equal to the annual
energy usage of 13.8 million homes in the U.S.
Save energy. Save money. Save the planet.
In 2012, Building Owners Management Association (BOMA), International Facility
Managers Association (IFMA), Green Parking Council (later GPC became part of
the U.S. Green Building Council), and the U.S. Department of Energy organized
the Lighting Energy Efficiency in Parking (LEEP) Campaign. Later, the International
Parking Institute also signed on a co-organizer.
The LEEP Campaign’s goal was to build on resources developed by DOE and
work with parking facility owners and operators (many who are served by BOMA,
The potential IFMA, USGBC, and IPI) to improve the energy efficiency of the lighting their
parking facilities.
Estimates range from 36 – 790 million parking lot spaces and 34 to 120 million
parking structure spaces in the U.S.* A reasonable working number is 610 million Since 2012, the LEEP Campaign has upgraded or newly installed energy
