CLASSIFICATION Hungary opposes a Canadian-led gold mine project in neighbouring Romania for fear that it could create cross-border environmental problems. Hungary's Position e Members of Hungary's Government and Opposition have condemned the Rosia Montana project, concerned about cross- border environmental problems. e Some Hungarian politicians have suggested that Romania should not be allowed to enter the EU (scheduled to occur in January 2007) unless the Rosia Montana project is stopped by the Romanian Government. Canadian Position e Our Embassy in Bucharest has worked with Gabriel Resources to seek to mitigate concerns about the project. e The Government of Canada expects Canadian companies operating abroad to uphold local laws and to reflect our values and international commitments relating to human rights, the environment, labour standards and transparency.
