Course Description This course advances the college-bound students understanding of literature and
develops strong skills in communication and writing. The student will analyze a
variety of literary works and write compositions, including a research paper.

Considerable emphasis is placed on the analysis and interpretation of various genres.


This course is designed to prepare the student for the demands of a two or four year
institution of higher learning.
Prerequisite classes No prerequisite is required.

Course Objectives Learn strategies to interpret various types of reading materials.


Gain appreciation for literature.
Improve reading skills by reading for a variety of purposes.
Improve vocabulary.
Learn different styles of writing and create original and creative
compositions.
Recognize different writing styles in literature.
Determine literary elements in literature.
Demonstrate knowledge of language terminology and application of concepts
such as capitalization, punctuation, and grammar usage.
Exhibit a mastery of paragraph structures.
Identify main ideas within non-fictional reading.
Continued learning of reading various types of graphs and charts.

Classroom Academic Students will be required to do the following work:


Requirements
Read assigned readings (at home and in-class)
Participate appropriately in class discussions and during group work
Maintain regular, punctual attendance
Complete daily Do Now as assigned
Work cooperatively in groups as assigned

Read and demonstrate understanding of eight to ten texts
Write at least one formal essay per quarter
Speak or present three to five times per year
Discuss or debate topics weekly
Take and organize notes daily
Maintain essay folder of writing to show growth

Required Materials Students are required to BRING with them every class period: (You will not be allowed to
go to your locker to retrieve them.)

Ink pens (1 black or blue, a second in another color {red, green, purple, etc.})
pencils
Highlighter
Flash Drive
Lined-Paper
A sturdy 1 binder for notes and writing assignments

Students would be at an advantage to have access to a home computer and printer. If
not, students will have to arrange for lab-time at school or in a public library.

(Note: The binder book will last from September through June.)

Strategies Use of PowerPoint and computer technology, class discussions, rubrics, individual student
demonstrations in class, peer tutoring, small group study and presentations, journal writing,
small group debates, and intense use of vocabulary and etymology in class assignments.

Participation 10%
Homework Students will receive homework at least 3 times a week. Home work will consist of,
reflective, or descriptive writing. Students are responsible for any and all work missed while
absent from school for any reason. Parents that have a student miss any days of school need
to call the school attendance office and excuse his or her child from school for the day(s)
absent. Parents may contact the school office and arrange to pick up assignments for their
children that will be out of school for three days (3) or longer.

BE POSITIVE AND TURN YOUR WORK IN ON TIME!!!

Research Papers, Students will be required to complete several projects and essays throughout the course of
Essays, and Projects this class. These will range from simple one page hand written papers to typed two or three
page papers. All typed projects and papers must be in SIZE 12, Times New Roman, or
Arial fonts, double spaced, with 1 inch margins. NO EXCEPTIONS!
Classroom Rules& 1. Follow all school rules and policies.

7. Hold trash until the end of the hour and discard during dismissal.
8. No cheating or plagiarism. PLAGIARISM/CHEATING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.
Plagiarizing is a form of cheating, and cheating is never acceptable. Plagiarism/cheating is
the taking of someone elses writing, work, ideas, etc. and not citing the source. If you are
caught, you will write your paper over.
Classroom Procedures - Quietly enter the classroom, be seated before the bell rings, and begin your Bell Work (Do
Now).
- Listen to and follow directions the first time they are given.
- Raise your hand and wait to be called upon before speaking.
- Remain in your seat unless otherwise directed by your teacher.
- Keep walkways clear.
- The teacher dismisses you, not the bell.
Attendance & Students are responsible for attending all classes on time with the course materials ready to
Tardiness learn. A tardy pass is required to enter the classroom after the tardy bell. Attendance for this

Tardiness:

Tardiness is defined as not being in the assigned area at the ringing of the bell. A student
who is more than fifteen (15) MINUTES LATE TO CLASS WILL BE CHARGED WITH
AN UNEXCUSED ABSENCE. When authorized personnel detain a student, the student will
receive a pass from that person to go to the next class and the tardiness will not be counted.
(The student should ask for a pass if detained by school personnel or be walked to their next
class by said personnel to be excused.)

Make-Up Missed If a student is absent from school they must come and pull the missing work from the
Assignments assignment box on the table in the front of the classroom. The student will have five (5) days

Save all graded assignments.
Bring any concern to the teachers attention as soon as possible. Do not wait
