Knitted Fabric

Knitted Fabric Properties
In woven fabric, strands usually run straight horizontally and vertically. But in case of knitted yarn, strands follow a loopy path along its row. A knitted fabric is stretchy in all directions. Depending on the yarn fiber and the specific pattern used, some are more stretchable than others. This is because there is no single straight line of yarn anywhere in the knitted pattern. This stretchiness is not seen in woven fabrics. That is why in most of modern stretchy garments, some of their stretch is attained through knit patterns, even as they rely on elastic synthetic materials for stretch. Main features of knitted fabric are explained as under: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) In knitted fabric, single yarn is intermeshed to form the fabric Knitted fabrics are fairly elastic both in length and width directions. Knitted fabrics are comfort and easy care. Knitted fabrics have poor drape. Knitted fabrics give warmth because of the insulative air pockets contained in this type of construction. 6) They are porous and provide breathing comfort because body movements cause the loops to expand and contract. 7) Knitted fabrics are very absorbent, light in weight, wrinkle resistant.

Non-woven fabric

Non-woven fabrics are the fabrics that are made by bonding or the interlocking of the fibers or both, accomplished by mechanical, chemical, thermal or solvent means, and the combination thereof.

Properties of non-woven fabric

The particular set of properties that a non-woven fabric may have is dependent upon the combination of factors in its production. The range of characteristics is wide ,the appearance of non-woven fabric may be paper like, felt like, or similar to that of woven fabrics. They may have soft , resilient hand, or they may be hard, stiff, or boardy with little pliability. They may be as thin as tissue paper or many times thicker. Non-wovens may be translucent or opaque. Their porosity may range from high, free air flow to minute to impermeable. Their strength may arrange from low tear and bust strength to very high tensile strength. They may be fabricated by gluing, heat bonding or sewing. The drapability of non-wovens varies from good to none at all. Some non wovens have excellent launderabilty , others have none, some may be dry cleaned. Non-wovens are engineered to provide particular properties suited to desired end uses. For example diapers can be constructed of two different layers of non woven fabric. An outer layer composed of a wetting agent treated polyester that will permit rapid fluid penetration, but with minimal lateral wicking, and an inner layer absorbent rayon. Thin, high filtration non woven fabrics for surgical masks can be composed of macro denier fibers, thick , fluffy , insolating non wovens for sky jackets can also be made of micro deniers fibers.
