"NASA recognizes the need of providing positive role models and interactive, hands-on activities for kids. Often times kids in large cities like Los Angeles, primarily minorities, are left with no choice for after school activities. Our program, "From the Outer Planets to the Inner City," lets kids experience the excitement of space exploration, science and technology," said Richard Shope, education and public outreach coordinator for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Pasadena, CA. "I'm so proud of what JPL scientists have done in the community and for after school programs. They've got a heart, they know how to give, and are brilliant," said Mayor Richard Riordan, who was present at the event where the Los Angeles Unified School District announced the creation of a new branch to oversee and coordinate after school programs. Live satellite interviews are available with Richard Shope,

education and public outreach coordinator, "From the Outer Planets to the Inner City." To book time for this interview, call Jack Dawson at 818-354-0040 or e-mail Jack at jack.b.dawson@jpl.nasa.gov.
