What is Business Analytics/Management
Science?
The science of better

Efficient and effective approaches to complex decision


making / decision support in organisations

Structured, systematic analysis (typically quantitative)


through model-building to:
compare alternatives
ask what-if? questions
Identification of factors influencing a system
Links with Operational Research
MSc BAMS and BAF are closely linked with the MScs in
OR, OR & Finance and OR & Statistics in Mathematical
Sciences
CORMSIS
We have joint Industrial Liaison Officers and several
optional courses
All programmes feature summer projects, within both
industrial and financial organizations
Expertise
Business Analytics and Management Science staff specialise
in:
Finance: credit scoring, data mining
Transport and logistics: freight transport, green logistics,
air passenger transport
Mathematical programming, optimisation, simulation
Healthcare: emergency care, workforce planning,
scheduling, disease modelling

Supply chain management: scheduling, manufacturing
BAMS & BAF: The Programme

9 months lectures

3 months dissertation/project
usually a placement with a company (in Southampton, the
UK or overseas), working on a practical problem of real
importance to the organization
Industrial Liaison Officers to find the projects and
organize a recruitment day

BAF: Objectives
Give knowledge of concepts, techniques, and models of management
science
particularly in financial organisations and in financial modelling.
Give understanding of the different aspects of finance and banking and
the models used therein.
