CE 806 REINFORCED CONCRETE MEMBERS

Fall Semester 2016

MS 2016
Assignment # 1

Problem 1

A four-span continuous beam of constant rectangular cross section is supported at A, B, C, D, and

E. The factored moments resulting from analysis are as follows:

Determine the required final concrete dimensions for this beam, using d = 1.75b, and determine
the reinforcement requirements at each critical moment section. Your final reinforcement ratio
should not exceed = 0.60.005. Use concrete with f c = 6000 psi and steel with fy = 60,000 psi.

Problem 2

A rectangular concrete beam measures 12 in. wide and has an effective depth of 18 in.
Compression steel consisting of two No.8 bars is located 2.5 in. from the compression face of the
beam. If f c = 4000 psi and steel with fy = 60,000 psi, what is the design moment capacity of the
beam, according to the ACI Code, for the following alternative tensile steel areas? (a) As = three
No. 10 bars in one layer, (b) As = four No. 10 bars in two layers, (c) As = six No.9 bars in two
layers. (Note: Check for yielding of compression steel in each case.) Plot Mn versus and comment
on your findings.
Problem 3
A rectangular beam made using concrete with f c = 5000 psi and steel with fy = 60,000 psi has a
width b = 18 in., an effective depth d = 21 in., and a total depth h = 24 in. The beam is reinforced
with four No.9 bars. Compute the nominal moment capacity, assuming (a) an equivalent
rectangular stress block, (b) a triangular stress block with a peak value of f c , and (c) a parabolic
stress block with a peak value of f c (see Figure). Compare and comment on your results, knowing
that the rectangular stress block correlates within 4 percent with test results.

Problem 4
A precast T beam is to be used as a bridge over a small roadway. Concrete dimensions are b = 48
in., bw = 16 in., hf = 5 in., and h = 25 in. The effective depth d = 20 in. Material strengths are fy
= 60,000 psi and fc = 6000 psi. Using approximately one-half the maximum tensile reinforcement
permitted by the ACI Code (select the actual size of bar and number to be used), determine the
design moment capacity of the girder. If the beam is used on a 30 ft simple span, and if in addition
to its own weight it must support railings, curbs, and suspended loads totaling 0.475 kip/ft, what
uniform service live load limit should be posted?
Problem 5
Provide expressions for calculation of parameters k1 and k2 for the trilinear concrete stress-strain
model shown below considering cm between three limits of 0.0015, 0.003, and 0.0038. For
derivation purposes, k3 = 1. The derivations should be provided in most simplified form. Provide
compressive resultant for cm of 0.0035.
