Purpose This unit standard is part of a tourism Mori suite which may be
used to contribute towards achieving the graduate outcomes of
the New Zealand Certificate in Tourism Mori (Level 3) [Ref:
2337]

People credited with this unit standard are able to explain the
importance of Mori place names, and demonstrate correct
pronunciation.

Explanatory notes

1 This unit standard is designed to assist the learner to identify the uniqueness of
Mori culture. It is thought that Mori language expression will enable the learner to
gain an understanding of the interconnectedness of Te Ao Mori. By understanding
these aspects the learner will be able to explain these differences for manuhiri and
highlight the significance for tourism.

2 Assessment
The assessment context for this unit standard is limited to local rohe or takiw.
Where local rohe are also occupied by a number of other iwi or hap, the tangata
whenua or mana whenua view will take precedence. Other iwi or hap views should
be encouraged in order to enrich and enhance understanding of key Mori concepts
and practices.

Assessment may be presented in a number of ways which may include but are not
limited to haka, oral presentations, pakiwaitara, prkau, visual presentations,
waiata, whakaari, written presentations.

This unit standard may be assessed against in the workplace or in a training provider
situation.

3 Definition
Tourism Mori is an indigenous cultural experience of interaction and engagement
with manuhiri.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Explain the importance of Mori place names in tourism.

Range place names may include but are not limited to maunga, awa, moana, roto,
rohe, towns, cities;
evidence of three is required.

Evidence requirements

1.1 History of Mori place names are explained in terms of their importance to hap
and/or iwi.

1.2 The influence of prkau and pakiwaitara in naming places is explained in


accordance with hap and/or iwi traditions.

1.3 The relationship between Mori place names and whnau, hap, and/or iwi is
explained in accordance with their history.

Range whakapapa, kaitiakitanga.

Outcome 2

Demonstrate correct pronunciation of Mori place names.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Mori place names are pronounced in accordance with te reo Mori
pronunciation rules.

Range may include but is not limited to dialect, short vowels, long
vowels, consonants, diphthongs, stress, rhythm;
evidence of six Mori place names is required.
