Name and One Liner description of technology, URL Geotagging is the process of adding geographical identification to various media like images, videos. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geotagging 2. Short Description Geotagging is basically labeling or tagging the photos using their latitude and longitude coordinates. It also can include the place names, distance & other related data. Geotagging is used to tag various other media such as video, web sites, RSS feeds, blogs, etc. Geotagging enables people to search and share photos easier and meaningfully as they are labeled with where they were taken. Geotagging can tell users the location of the content of a given media as well as show the media for given coordinates. The technology used to tag the media is the GPS (Global Positioning System). This technology allows locating the media by its global positioning & enabling the tagging facility. Geotagging enabled information services would allow the users to find variety of location specific information. For example one can find the images taken near a specific location by giving its latitude and longitude coordinates. Geotagging can be done either manually or automatically. There are many applications & services which use this Geotagging technology in the web for various purposes. Google Earth is an application of Google, a three-dimensional navigable model of the globe which allows locating the destinations of photos & the adding a place mark to get the exact coordination. By using flickr or picassa, people can select images suit for the location & geotag the images. Picassa or flickr will the write the image’s longitude & latitude coordinates into its EXIF GPS metadata. Trippermap is another web service which use Geotagging. It allows you to put flash based world map on your own website or blog which will then automatically search your photos at flickr for location & plot the photos on your own Trippermap. Auto tagging of the metadata can be done using a GPS capable device. RoboGEO is a software only solution for Geotagging photos with longitude and latitude information with the same functionalities as a GPS camera. It also writes the image’s geographic information permanently into its EXIF header. The writing is lossless, so therefore no loss of image quality. This can be used with Google Earth, create ESRI shapefiles, used in flickr, can export to MapPoint, etc.
3. Objectives of the Technology
Give the exact location of the media in the internet. Enable users to tag the media according to the geographical location. View the media location & details regarding the media (if any). Enhance the service oriented applications with visual tagged images.
4. Released Date Dan Catt, the senior engineer of Flickr, created the first geotagged photo in March 2005. 5. Business Model As Geotagging is used in many applications each has different kinds of business models mean while some don’t have any business model. Flickr has such business environment such that users need to pay for subscriptions & can upload more & get the enhancement features. Flickr also use the advertising as a component of their business model. Since Google bought picassa, it has not its own business model but Google has. Google Earth is also a part of Google & all these are under the business model of the Google. 6. Competitors In the world of Geotagging, competitors mean the organizations who use this technology in their applications. In that case, Google Earth, Flickr, Picassa, Nikon mypicturetown, twitter, Sony, phanefare, SmugMug can be seen as the best competitors in the Geotagging environment. 7. Challenges The biggest challenge involved in Geotagging is that it requires a GPS enabled device, and also need to run specialized software that pulls location data from a GPS device’s track log. But this won’t be a challenge to manual Geotagging. Researchers found that Geotagging may cause to cyber-casing & need find solutions for those attacks. 8. Innovative Uses of the Technology In today’s world, Geotagging is highly used in many ways. Mass Geotagging allows tagging photos once at the same location. In manual Geotagging users are given the ability to search for locations in maps by city names, airport codes, etc. in flickr users are allowed to drag the photos on the maps & the degree of accuracy is inferred by current zooming level of the location. Geotagging technology can be used to market or advertise the organizations by tagging their images on the map indicating the latest details. People can use their mobile phone to view the important locations in a city using GPS system.
