B1 TARGET STRENGTH FOR MIX PROPORTIONING

fck = fck + 1.65 s
Where
fck = Target average compressive strength at 28 days,
fck = Characteristic compressive strength at 28 days,
s = Standard deviation

From Table 1 standard deviation, s = 5 N/mm2

Therefore target strength = 30 + 1.65 x 5 = 38.25 N/mm2

B2 SELECTION OF WATER CEMENT RATIO

Maximum water cement ratio = 0.60

Adopt water cement ratio as 0.50

B3 SELECTION OF WATER CONTENT

Maximum water content for 20mm aggregate = 186litre (for 25 to 50mm slump range)

B4 CALCULATION OF CEMENT CONTENT

Water - cement ratio = 0.50

Cement content (= Water quantity/ Water Cement Ratio) = 372 kg/m3

B5 PROPORTION OF VOLUME OF COARSE AGGREGATE AND FINE AGGREGATE CONTENT

Proportion (%) of Volume of Coarse aggregates = 0.60

Proportion(%) of Volume of Fine aggregates = 1 0.60 = 0.40

B6 MASS OF CHEMICAL ADMIXTURE (% by weight of cement):

Mass of Chemical Admixture = % dosage x weight of cement

= 0.20*372= 7.44 kg
B7 MIX CALCULATIONS

The mix calculations per unit volume of concrete shall be as follows

a) Volume of concrete = 1 m3

b) Volume of cement = 0.118 m3

c) Volume of water = 0.186 m3

d) Volume of Chemical admixture = 0.00649 m3

e) Volume of all in aggregates = a (b + c +d)

= 0.68951 m3

f) Mass of coarse aggregates = e x %age o Vol. of CA x specific gravity of CA x 1000

= 1133.55 kg
g) Mass of fine aggregates = e x %age of Vol. of FA x specific gravity of FA x 1000

= 755.702 kg

B8 MIX PROPORTIONS FOR TRIAL NUMBER 1

Cement = 372 kg/m3

Water = 186 kg/m3

Fine aggregate = 755.702 kg/m3

Coarse aggregates = 1133.55 kg/m3

Water cement ratio = 0.50

Chemical Admixture = 7.5 kg/m3

Hence the Ratio is 1. : 2.03. : 3.04.
