was supposed to look at all of that information you gave us? Although not
that crazy, it seems to be a recurring theme. This had generally been pre-
ceded by the comment: Yeah, I know my system is 10 years old, but you
mean I needed to have it pumped? Historically, with our bill for services,
we have religiously provided site drawings and technical information along

with an explanation regarding their installed system. Having been around
long enough to experience follow-up calls on many of these systems proves
the old adage about leading a horse to water. As an industry, we need to ex-
pand the efforts to get information to the homeowner/consumer.

If I could change one industry regulation, it would be: Not one thing
but two. First, remove the term flushable from all wipes and products with
the potential of being put down the drain. Having owned a septic pump-
ing business for several years, we have been able to experience firsthand the
damage and problems these products can create.
Second, I dont think it would be a specific regulation because regs are
in constant flux as technologies and equipment change and we are con-
stantly playing catch-up, but I would find a way for the regulatory groups
to be adequately staffed, trained and financed so that the level of active
enforcement increases throughout the industry. It seems to be a common
problem nationally that even when regulations are implemented with-
out an adequate enforcement effort, the new regs are ignored. They end up
putting the compliance operators at a competitive disadvantage; customers
are being misled, and environmental problems are continuing. I think you
see the results in jurisdictions that have well-established, effective enforce-
ment involvement where there is a mutual respect for the regulatory group
and the on-site professional. ARMAL Inc.

n Chuck Lang Jr.s area of central Ohio, competition has become fierce
for septic tank pumping over the past 10 years. Yet his company
Chucks Septic Tank, Sewer & Drain Cleaning in Grove City has
roughly tripled in size since 2014.
While that may sound counterintuitive, the name of the company ex-
plains how it happened. The business established by Langs father, Chuck
Lang Sr., in 1970 as Chucks Septic Tank does more than just pump septic
tanks. It also pumps grease traps, recycles oil and grease, inspects pipelines
and cleans sewers and drainlines throughout Ohio.
It was hard for us to branch out (into more septic tank pumping),
says Lang, 48. Its certainly not the easy choice to enter new markets be-
cause it comes with expenses. You take a gamble that a machine like a
$40,000 or $50,000 trailer jetter will pay for itself.

The profit margins in the septic business are so small that it doesnt make
sense to go to the next county over, Lang explains. We realized that in the

So, the company headed in a different direction. Early on, the Langs

The business management software also charts many different metrics
related to profit and performance. For instance, all technicians have an iPad

levels have gone down and be aware of tank buoyancy problems, where the

Drainfields under the surface should be all right if excessive water
was not delivered to the drainfield during the flood event. And if there are
no openings, silt and other debris should not have entered the drainfield. It
should not be used, however, until the groundwater has subsided and verti-

to compaction, which can lead to system failure. Avoid driving or operating

Cash It In Follow These Tips

Without a pension or a hefty 401(k) savings plan, many pumpers rely on the sale

Potentially that was true 20 years ago, Kent says, and at first glance, it
seems reasonable. But not anymore for at least three reasons: CONVERSATIONS
Explaining those realities to new clients can be a sobering conversation,
Reason No. 1: People are living longer, and that means you need more but its also the start to helping them find a path forward to achieve their

deepest goals and comfortably steward the fruits of their lifelong labors.
First is sorting out their current and anticipated expenses and sepa-
rating the essential ones from the frills. That isnt a one-size-fits-all exer-
cise: It requires exploring peoples deepest values.
Helping the kids assuming the children are now adults and living
their own lives you could say is discretionary, Kent observes. But in
some families, it isnt.
Others may be committed to giving as much of their wealth as possible
away to charity or to their religious institution. Theyd forgo a vacation to be
able to contribute.
Whether its travel, personal hobbies, community involvement, or any
number of possible places to spend, the choices are practically infinite. Its
essential to set priorities and write a budget.
Even people accustomed to a disciplined spending plan in their busi-
ness may have never lived by a household budget. For them, coming up
with that is the hardest part of the job.

In short, when a windfall comes your way, youve got two tasks: to get a
clear picture of how long it will really last, and to sort out a realistic plan to
spend wisely and help it grow.
Better still, though, is being prepared.
At the very least, consider short-term preparation, Kent says. Plenty of
his clients come to him after the sale, but he advocates enlisting a wealth
management professional sooner than that when youre putting your
business on the block, if not before. That way, he points out, you can manage
your own expectations for the transaction.
Knowing how much you really need to recoup could motivate you to
price your business more aggressively. At the very least, if you know upfront
the limits of your prospective proceeds, you can start thinking about other
resources to tap to help pay for your postretirement life.
Planning ahead doesnt have to start there, however. If youre still mid-
career, or even just starting out, its not too soon to adopt simple strategies
that will improve your endgame position:
If youre not saving for retirement but consider the business equity to
be your pension, chuck that idea pronto. Consult with your financial advisor,
and establish a retirement account. As a business owner, you have several
options. The tax advantages alone should be enough to motivate you.
Consider your business spending patterns. Often, people with small
businesses in lean years scrimp and they save, and in great years splurge to
reward themselves for the tough years, Kent says. If thats you, work with
your management team and your outside accountants to put more dis-
cipline in your business budget. Saving for a rainy day can also yield extra
money for retirement, for example.
Enlist professional help whether through a specialized wealth man-
agement firm, like Bernstein, or going to a fee-based financial planner. Fee-
based is important: You want someone whose income doesnt include
incentives for you to purchase investment products, insurance policies or
other such instruments from the planners business. And dont be shy about
asking direct questions so you know exactly what youre getting.
Whether youve just sold your business, youre getting ready to sell it,
or youre simply dreaming of that day years or even decades from now, its
important to know that when it comes to how that act will change your fi-
nancial life, you dont have to go it alone.
Find a good advisor who can help you make sense of it now and for
the rest of your life. If for no other reason, just think how much more relaxing
that kind of help can make your golf game. Since 1979 November 2017 57

Undocumented onsite systems along a 25-mile stretch of the Russian
River would be inspected under a plan of the North Coast Regional Wa-
ter Quality Control Board, according to Sonoma West Times & News. In-
spections would occur on properties within 600 feet of the river as it flows
through northern California wine country from Healdsburg to Monte Rio.
Concerned real estate brokers asked for a meeting with officials to discuss
how property owners would be affected by the costs needed to repair or re-
place systems that fail inspections.
A preliminary assessment of properties in Monte Rio six years ago found
no record of wastewater disposal plans or permits for most of them. A plan
proposed two years ago listed that stretch of the river as a priority area where
septic system problems contributed to high bacteria levels in the river. That
plan was abandoned in the face of opposition from residents.

A man who said he couldnt take a certification course was fined $500
for installing a septic system without a license, according to The Guardian.
Allan Emmett MacDonald, 65, pleaded guilty to the charge in provincial
court in Charlottetown. He told the court he had been in the wastewater
business for 40 years and was previously licensed. MacDonald has more
than $7,000 in unpaid fines, including a $200 fine for the same offense in
2015. The judge also placed MacDonald on probation for two years and add-
ed a condition that he not install any wastewater systems unless he obtains
a valid license. Since 1979 November 2017 69

dosing pump injection system from
Lenzyme/Trap-Cleer into the
mainline located under the three-
compartment sink feeding into the
grease trap. Liquid Trap-Cleer was dosed in at 2 ounces per evening. It is designed to keep
the system flowing properly and consume much of the grease, extending the time between
clean-outs and servicing. It is also ideal for the pumping contractor, as they make money
monthly even when they are not there cleaning the system.
Result: After several months, the system continued to operate normally. Only a small amount
of grease built up in the trap. The restaurant hasnt shut down, and the odors disappeared.
The trap required pumping after eight months. Based on a recommendation to clean the sys-
tem when the grease level reaches one-third capacity, the restaurant scheduled cleanings on
a four-month interval. 800/223-3083;

Problem: A new Austin, Texas, hotel used a large freestanding grease interceptor located
in its basement. The citys grease ordinance is similar to requirements around the country
for kitchen wastewater sewer effluent. Unlike a buried concrete grease interceptor that is
subject to compressive forces, the freestanding interceptor is subject to tensile (bending and
stretching) forces, requiring steel construction. Due to the harsh environment and punishing
pumping services, scratches in the coating quickly lead to deterioration and ultimate failure.
Solution: ParkUSA provided and installed the new GreaseTrooper GTS Grease Intercep-
tor. Stainless steel construction offers superior corrosion-resistant performance and durabil-
ity, according to the manufacturer. It is UPC listed.
Result: Service interruptions and capital expenses were nearly eliminated with proper rou-
tine maintenance. 888/611-7275;
