Opening (state objectives, connect to previous learning, and make relevant to real life) - Take a moment and
think about a time that you and your family may have moved. Was it from a different city, state, or
country. What was the reason for the move? Was it a new job, more opportunity, or better
neighborhood? Keep these answers in mind as we discuss why colonists made the decision to leave the only
home they knew to venture to the Americas and start a new life. What were their reasons to uproot
themselves and their family? Was it to escape religious tyranny, the opportunity to own land, make more
money or to have a better life overall?

Closing/Student Reflection/Real-life connections: Today you have all created a graphic organizer listing
reasons for colonization to America. We will be using this organizer again to form a one-page essay later
in the week. For the next few minutes I would like you to think about how Colonization relates to
immigration today. Are the reasons the same or different and how? Please pick one reason and give a
comparison, write your answer on a notecard and turn it as you leave today.
