UNIT 2 SPECIFICATION WRITING


Brief Specification for 1st class, 2nd class, 3rd class building. Detailed specification for earthwork excavation,
plain cement concrete, Reinforced concrete, first class and second class brickwork, damp proof course, ceramic
tiles/marble flooring and dado-ing, woodwork for doors, windows frames and shutters, cement plastering, painting
& weathering course in terrace.

16 Marks Questions:
1. Write detailed specifications for earthwork excavation.
Starting of work:in all soils as per approved plan and lining
Workmanship: sides truly vertical and bottom uniformly levelled or as per approved slope
Excavated material: stacked away from sides of trenches by atleast 2 m for refilling in plinth in layers of 30
cm and well-watered surplus material spread out uniformly up to lead of 100cm
Protection to existing services: water pipes, electric cables, etc. carefully supported and protected
Measurement: exact length and width of lowest level as per drawing depth measured as vertical distance of
trench bottom from average ground level measured before excavation
Rate for payment: includes timbering and other supports for securing sides of excavations materials from
excavation belongs to owner antiques belong to the government

2. Write detailed specifications for plain cement concrete (1:1:2, 1:1.5:3, 1:2:4, 1:3:6, 1:4:8).
Proportion 1:2:4: 1 part cement: 2 parts sand: 4 parts coarse aggregates by weight
Properties of coarse aggregate (CA): clean, hard, dense and free from impurities such as earth, coal, dust and
other organic matter 6 mm to 20 mm sized aggregate as 33 % and 20 mm to 40 mm as 67 % of total CA
washed and cleaned before use
Fine aggregate: clean and free from organic and vegetable matter coarse size up to 5 mm washed if any earth
Cement: fresh and as per Indian standard codes
Water proofing compound:as per Indian standard codes mixed along with water
Water: clean, fresh and of pot-able quality as per Indian standard codes
Mixing: done on clean and solid platform for hand mixing dry CA stacked evenly on platform sand and
cement mixed on dry to form uniform colour and spread over CA mixed once without water add water
mix for 3 times evenly and slowly to form uniform concrete mechanical mixer needs 2 minutes mixing
emptied after every mix -
Centring: clean and sufficiently strong to carry total weight timber or steel material timber bullies as props
with 40 mm thick wooden base of more than 0.1 sq. m area props spaced at 1.2 m c/c -
Preparation of base: thoroughly cleaned, washed and wetted before placing concrete
Laying: as per requirement area and thickness as per drawings laid straight in line, sharp and unbroken
tapped for no honeycomb formation after formwork removal compacted and levelled for continuous work
above surface is roughened and chequered for proper bonding
Finishing of exposed surfaces: with 12 mm thick cement plaster and 3 coats of white or colour wash
Curing: well-watered for atleast 20 days after laying

Mortar: 1 part cement : 4 parts of sand by weight for 1:4 mortar mixed for only one bag of cement at a time
mortar mixed with water to be used within 30 minutes mixed on a water tight platform
Laying: broken bricks only as closers corners truly in plumb and sides in line and level mortar joints max 10
mm thickness bricks laid with frogs uppermost top course laid with bricks with frogs bottom faced joints to
be raked and faces cleaned at end of each days work only skilled masons to be employed
Curing: for atleast 15 days
Protection: for completed work when further work takes place above or nearby
Scaffolding: for works at 1.5 m high and above strong and with sufficient support rate included in brickwork
Measurement: length and height measured as on site thickness is for 1 or 1 or 2 bricks so on

5. Write detailed specifications for damp proof course (DPC).


Proportion: 1 part cement: 2 parts sand: 4 parts coarse aggregates (or 1 part cement:1 parts sand:3 parts
coarse aggregates)by weight thickness of course 25 to 40 mm
Properties of coarse aggregate (CA):clean, hard, dense and free from impurities such as earth, coal, dust and
other organic matter 6 mm to 12 mm sized aggregate
Fine aggregate: clean and free from organic and vegetable matter coarse size up to 5 mm
Cement: fresh and as per Indian standard codes
Water proofing compound:as per Indian standard codes mixed along with water
Water: clean and of pot-able quality as per Indian standard codes

Laying: as per requirement area and thickness of DPC as per drawings compacted and levelled laid in same
day joints at openings for continuous work above DPC surface is roughened and chequered for proper
bonding
Curing:well-watered for atleast 7 days after laying no continuous work above DPC till 48 hours of flooded
watering

6. Write detailed specifications for ceramic tile (or marble) flooring and dado-ing.
Marble quality: of 1st class quality free from cracks non-porous uniform colour harmonious veins present
throughout the work
Samples: shall be submitted for each range of variety only approved samples to be used
Anchors and dowels: brass or bronze anchors, dowels, clamps, wires to secure marbles in place no extra cost
for no face screwing
Vertical and horizontal surfaces: vertical work to be set before flooring and extended 25 mm below finished floor
level horizontal flooring with 10 mm or 12 mm thick bedding with 1:6:12 brick bat (as CA) cement concrete
paid separately marbles to be laid over 1:3 cement mortar and joints finished with white cement
Workmanship: vertical marbles machine polished at workshop and then fitted at site horizontal marbles fitted
at site and then machine polished skirting and dado shall be of specified height as in drawing plain or
bevelled or round edges
Finishing: no staining nor discolouration during work only machine cut joints to be of perfect alignment and
finished with suitable matching colours covered and protected with wax or any suitable material when set
Measurement: only paid for superficial area no extra for wastages, anchors, dowels rate includes drilling,
cutting, fitting or any special provisions

7. Write detailed specifications for woodwork for doors, windows - frames and shutters.
Properties of timber: best quality, well-seasoned, free from defects cracks, knots, flaws, shakes
Fabrication and fixing: rate includes fabricating and fixing in position
Shutters: made from scanting of 40 mm thickness may be fully panelled or fully glazed or partly panelled and
partly glazed as per requirement thickness of 40 mm
Frames: size 100 mm x 80 mm provided with MS holdfasts made of flats 30 mm x 6 mm 3 on each side for
door and 2 on each side for window
Workmanships: made by only skilled carpenters defects found later to be rectified at no extra cost
Fastenings and fixtures: included in rate of woodwork made of brass fixed as per requirements
Painting: frame facing brick wall to be painted with thick paint or coal tar painting other sides is separate item
Measurement: includes full frame and shutters no extra cost for wastages
8. Write detailed specifications for cement plastering (1:3, 1:4, 1:5, 1:6).
Proportion: 1 part cement: 4 parts sand (for 1:4 plaster)by weight thickness of course minimum 12 mm
Fine aggregate: clean and free from organic and vegetable matter coarse and angular
Cement: fresh and as per Indian standard codes
Water: clean and of pot-able quality as per Indian standard codes
Mixing: plaster mixed for only one bag of cement at a time when mixed with water, to be used within 30
minutes mixed on a water tight platform
Preparation: walls cleaned and wetted before plastering joints raked out to a depth of 20 mm
First coat: 12 mm thick coat markings made initially for final coat thickness
Second coat: with 1 part cement : 1 part sand 8 mm thick coat applied after 7 days of 1st coat
Workmanship: 1st coat is coarse finished with zigzag lines to give bonding with 2nd coat 2nd coat is fine
finished
Curing: 1st coat well-watered for atleast 7 days after laying 2nd coat watered for 15 days
Payment: for the superficial area plastered

9. Write detailed specifications for painting.


White washing work
Preparing: walls cleaned before white washing
Materials: fresh lime slaked at work site before using and mixed with water and clean gum screened with a
clean white cloth
Painting: applied with fine jute brush cleaned at end of every days work stirred well before applying
applied in vertical strokes first and then horizontal strokes applied for 3 coats next coat applied only after
previous coat is dried applied to create uniform coloured finish
Cleaning: stains of white wash on floors and other areas to be cleaned before its drying
Measurement: paid for superficial area deductions made for openings for only once

Painting work
Preparing: painting area cleaned before painted rubbed with sand paper painting steel work first to be
removed from rust
Paint: only approved quality and colour ready made paint of water or oil based fresh and new stock
Painting: applied with fine quality brush cleaned with turpentine at end of every days work primer coat is
applied first next coat applied only after previous coat is dried stirred well before applying applied in
vertical strokes first and then horizontal strokes applied to create uniform coloured finish totally 3 coats
Cleaning: stains of white wash on floors and other areas to be cleaned before its drying
Measurement: paid for superficial area deductions made for openings for only once

10. Write detailed specifications for weather course in terrace.


Bitumen: residual type petroleum bitumen of penetration 80/100 or hot cut back bitumen or equivalent asper IS
codal specifications bitumen brought to site in its original packing only approved quality to be used residual
type petroleum bitumen (grade 80/100)heated to 180 C to 190 C hot cut back bitumen heated to 165 C to
170 C before applying
Preparing the surface: surface is painted only when thoroughly dry - cleaned with wire brushes and cotton or
gunny cloth all loose materials and scales removedand further cleaned with piece of cloth lightly soaked in
kerosene
Painting: surface prepared and treated shall be painted uniformly with bitumen of - bitumen coat continued 15
cm along the verticalsurfaces joining the roof for parapet walls continued up to the drip courses petroleum
bitumen of penetration (grade 80/100) applied on the roof surface at >180 C hot cut back bitumen applied at
> 165C
Workmanship: no blank patches are left quantity of bitumen applied per 10 sq. m of roof surface is 17 kg
Spreading Sand: immediately after painting, dry, clean sharp coarse sand at the rate of 60 cubic decimetre per 10
sq. m shall be evenly spread and levelled over the surface when the bitumen is still hot
Measurement: paid for superficial area of painted surface measured in sq. m length and breadth measured
correct to a cm
Rate: includescost of all materials and labour

11. Write detailed specification for 1st class building.


Foundation and Plinth: 1st class brickwork in 1:6 cement mortar over 1:4:8 cement concrete
Damp Proof Course: 2.5 cm (1) thick 1:1.5:3 cement concrete with waterproofing compound with 2 coats of
bitumen
Superstructure: 1st class brickwork in 1:6 cement mortar lintels for doors, windows in RCC
Roofing: RCC slabs with insulation layer and terracing above, supported by RCC beams height of rooms >= 3.7
m (12)
Flooring: Drawing and dining rooms mosaic (terrazzo) flooring, WC and bathroom floor and dado tiles,
bedroom coloured and polished cement flooring 2.5 cm (1) thick cement concrete over PCC base, other rooms
and areas - polished cement flooring 2.5 cm (1) thick cement concrete over PCC base
Finishing: Inside walls 12 mm () thick cement plaster of ratio 1:5, outside walls 12 mm () thick cement
plaster of ratio 1:4, ceilings cement (1:3) plastered, bedroom, drawing room, dining room inside walls
distempered , other rooms inside walls white washed 3 coats, outside walls coloured snow-cem 2 coats over
1 coat of whitewash
Doors and Windows: Doors and windows frame seasoned teakwood, shutters teak wood panels or glazed
panels or partly panelled and partly glazed as required, additional wire gauge shutters and painted iron gratings
or grills for windows, all fittings brass, doors and windows varnished or enamel painted of 2 coats over 1 coat
of priming
Miscellaneous: PVC or painting finished asbestos cement rain water pipes, First class water supply and sanitary
fittings and electrical installations, 1 m high 7.5 cm (3) thick apron all around the building from ground level.

12. Write detailed specification for 2nd class building.


Foundation and Plinth: 1st class brickwork in lime mortar over lime concrete
Damp Proof Course: 2 cm () thick 1:1.5:3 cement concrete with waterproofing compound
Superstructure: 2nd class brickwork in lime mortar lintels for doors, windows in reinforced brickwork
Roofing: RCC slabs with lime concrete terracing above, supported by wooden beams or brick arches veranda
roof Allahabad tiles or asbestos cement sheet
Flooring: 2.5 cm (1) thick cement concrete over lean concrete base, veranda floors brick tile or flagstone over
lime concrete finished with cement painting
Finishing: Inside walls and outside walls 12 mm () thick cement plaster of ratio 1:6, ceiling cement (1:3)
plastered, inside walls white washed 3 coats, outside walls colour washed 2 coats over 1 coat of whitewash
Doors and Windows: Doors and windows frame RCC or seasoned sal wood, shutters deodar wood panels or
glazed panels or partly panelled and partly glazed as required, all fittings iron, doors and windows painted of
2 coats over 1 coat of priming
Miscellaneous: Painting finished cast iron rain water pipes, water supply and sanitary fittings and electrical
installations provided if required

13. Write detailed specification for 3rd class building. (8 marks)


Foundation and Plinth: 2nd class brickwork in lime mortar over lime concrete
Damp Proof Course: 2 cm () thick cement concrete with waterproofing compound
Superstructure: 2nd class brickwork in lime mortar brickwork arches or wooden lintels for doors, windows
Roofing: mud plastered over tiles or bricks or planks over wooden beams or tile or GI sheet or asbestos cement
sheet sloping roof
Flooring: brick on edge floor over well rammed earth
Finishing: Inside walls and outside walls lime plaster and white washed 3 coats
Doors and Windows: Doors and windows frame sal wood, shutters chir or mango or country wood painted
of 2 coats of ordinary paint over 1 coat of priming

14. Write detailed specification for 4th class building. (8 marks)


Foundation and superstructure: sun dried or low quality brickwork in mud mortar 2nd class brickwork arches
or wooden planks for doors and window s openings
Roofing: tile roof over bamboo or wooden supports
Flooring: earthen floor
Finishing: Inside walls and outside walls water proof mud plastered
Doors and Windows: Doors and windows chir or mango or country wood
