Utilization of Instrumental Music in Solving Word Problems in Science 8 3

Context and Rationale

Rationale

Problem solving is an important competency for all learners to imbibe. They are all

required to acquire necessary skills in performing well such academic task in all grade levels across

any academic disciplines. According to D'Zurilla and Goldfried (1971), it is a cognitive affective

behavioral process through which an individual attempts to identify, discover, or invent effective

means of coping with problems encountered in everyday living. Thus, it allows them to develop

their own reasoning skill, mathematical ability and mode organization. Further, Goldstein and

Levin (1987) confirmed that it is a higher-order cognitive process and intellectual function that

requires the modulation and control of more routine or fundamental skills. This implicates, as

Noelle declared, that they need to be a good problem solver in order to compete in todays global

economy. However, most of them find this difficult especially in problem solving in word form.

In particular, Verschaffel, Greer and De Corte (2000) defined word problem in science

education, as a mathematical exercise where significant background information on the problem

is presented as text rather than in mathematical notation. However, the learning process is a burden

for both teacher and students. As it is observed, students attention, participation and performance

are diverted to other things hindering them to catch up with the lesson. And so, it is an imperative

for teacher to think of ways and strategies to encourage the students to participate, to solve and to

master the required skills. Thus, it is inevitable to advance in to more complicated topics with

different learning competencies.

According to Hallam and Rogers (2012) study, that application of instrumental music to

learning has a positive implications for education. On the same manner, according to White (2007),

implementing background music to the grade four classroom has proven effective tool. Hence,
Utilization of Instrumental Music in Solving Word Problems in Science 8 4

OHare (2011) confirmed that this has possible and practical applications in school. Further, Chau

and Riforgiate (2010), said that this really affects childs life.

In undocumented observations, the researcher found that eighty-seven (87) percent of her

students especially the academically challenged, didnt like problem solving in word. Moreover,

in her pretest, conducted at the beginning of the school year 2017, eighty-three (83) percent of her

students failed which marked as an alarming indication that they need to develop on this learning

area. Thus, informal interview revealed that throughout the course of diagnostic test, they find it

difficult to understand due to lack of knowledge and multitasking requirement of the process

refers to comprehension and solving. This reflected on Schooler et al (1995) study that claimed,

problem solving has a clear link between problem solving and perception. And these kind of

problems can be solved with insight, like visual illusions that have different configurations, for

seeing that such an illusion has multiple configurations requires insight, of a kind. This lead the

researcher to apply instrumental music to academic process as an opportunity to strengthen their

perception.

It is believed that music raises performance level and productivity by reducing stress and

tension, masking irritating sounds and contributing to a sense of privacy. Further, listening to the

right tunes can provide mood- altering effects and can create better quality of life for those who

use music to distress (Riotta, 2016). Based on the study conducted by Hallam and Price (2002),

students exposed to background music significantly improved their behavior and performance

during a mathematics task. According to the Maas (2013) study, classical music has a positive

relationship with the quiz scores.

Yao et al attested, that playing music in the background have positive effects on memory

recall, particularly spatial memory recall. Suggestions are made as to how and what kind of music

might be used in different classroom situations to create particular and more effective learning
Utilization of Instrumental Music in Solving Word Problems in Science 8 5

environments. According to Garlin and Owen (2005), background music has been shown to affect

the in-store behavior of consumers; shoppers move at a slower pace through stores when slow

music is played, and spend more money than when the background music is fast.

With this, the researcher is moved to determine the appropriate technique and strategy to

aid the students in particular the academically challenged students utilization of instrumental

music to teaching and learning process. Hence, this study will evaluate the effectiveness of

instrumental music while studying or performing problem solving in word tasks.

Research Questions

The present study will aim to determine the effectiveness of instrumental music in relation

to solving word problem in Science 8 of the academically challenged students. The main problem

is: is instrumental music effective in improving the scholastic performance of the academically

challenged students in solving word problems (acceleration and work) in Science?

Specifically, it will also seek to answer the following questions:

1. How may the respondents be described in terms of:

1.1. age;

1.2. sex;

1.3. section; and

1.4. Second Grading Grade Point Average (GPA) in Science?

2. How may instrumental music be described in terms of genre:

2.1. pop;

2.2. jazz;

2.3. R&B and soul;

2.4. rock; and

2.5. religious music?

Utilization of Instrumental Music in Solving Word Problems in Science 8 6

3. What is the pretest word problem solving result of the group?

4. What is the posttest word problem solving result of the group?

5. Is there any significant difference between the pretest and posttest word problem

solving result?

6. What is the implication of utilization of instrumental music to the academically

challenged students in word problem solving?

Hypothesis

The present study will consider the null hypothesis: there is no significant difference

between the pretest and posttest word problem solving result of the group.

Significance of the Study

The study will test the effectiveness of instrumental music in application to learning word

problem solving in Science 8. Furthermore, it will attempt to establish its usage and benefits in

developing the scholastic performance of academically challenged students in Science. Therefore,

results and recommendations will be beneficial for the following groups and individuals:

Students. The present study is a student-centered research. This may enable the students

to develop and to enhance their mathematical ability in terms of solving word problems. Likewise,

they may find another avenue to enjoy learning as they improve their skills specially in word

problem solving.

Science Teachers. The study may encourage Science teachers to look for different avenue

of making their lesson more enjoyable and interesting that may encourage students to engage

themselves to different scientific endeavors. This may open up also new horizon of in better

understanding the 21st century learners who are not fitted to the traditional learning method.

School Administrators. The result of this study may enable the school administrators to

gain knowledge on how to give assistance to their teachers using 21st century strategies and
Utilization of Instrumental Music in Solving Word Problems in Science 8 7

technique that may facilitate and promote learning among students. This may also give them

encouragement in supporting teachers on their new, timely, innovative and creative way of

teaching the students.

Future Researchers. The present study may provide good springboard for future

researchers who may conduct similar topic. Moreover, this may give sufficient data about the

usage and effect of instrumental music in teaching and learning process.

Scope and Limitations

The study will be focused on effectiveness of instrumental music as utilized in

academically challenged students in solving word problems in Science 8 with the topics Work and

Acceleration. To realize its purpose, it will employ a quasi-experimental research using single

group design with pretest and posttest. According to Calderon and Gonzales (2005), this involves

a thing, person, or group subjected or exposed to a certain experimental factor for a certain period

of time. It will be limited to the grade 8 level Narra, of Lamao National High School in the

second quarter of the school year 2017 2018.

The aforementioned locale is a secondary integrated high school that is composed of Junior

and Senior high school. Thus, it caters more than three (3) thousand students living in the barangay

it is situated and to the nearby barangays near to its location. On the other hand, the grade 8 Narra

section is composed of heterogeneous students having the average of eight (80) below. Therefore,

this section is practically composed of the academically challenged students. It comprised of thirty-

eight (38) students having sixteen (16) female and twenty-two (22) male students. Because the

class size is projected to be manageable, the researcher will not use any sampling methodology for

the study. She will preserve the entire population as the sample size of the study.

Instrumental music will be exposed to the group as an interventional material. This kind of

music will be categorized into the following genre: pop, jazz; R&B and soul, rock, and religious
Utilization of Instrumental Music in Solving Word Problems in Science 8 8

music. The researcher will expose the participant on the aforementioned instrumental music for

two (2) weeks every class meetings. It will serve as background music as she discusses the word

problem solving on the topic Acceleration and Work. Moreover, exposure will also include

assessment periods: formative and summative assessment.

As the design indicates, there will be series of testing to identify the effectiveness of the

instrumental music. To know the background or basis for improvement, pretest will be conducted.

The purpose of piloting this test is to identify the background of the respondents on their ability in

solving word problem. After the experimental period expires another test will be conducted,

posttest. This is to measure the development that happened after the experimental period. To avoid

biases or any external factors, there will be another posttest to be conducted after the first posttest

is executed. This is to eliminate the probability of having external factors that affects the

respondents posttest result. .

Lastly, to numerically identify the data, appropriate statistical methods will be used.

Among the statistical tools that will be used are frequency, percentile, mean and T-test. The

standard deviation functions will describe the respondents of the study. For identifying the

effectiveness of the material, sample T-test will be employed. All of the functions will be done

through the use of SPSS statistical package. Animosity of the participant will be secured and any

data related to the research will not affect to any academic classroom performance.

Method

Type of Research

This opus will employ a quantitative research using a quasi- experimental type. Manuel

and Medel (1976) explained that this method of research aims to discover the influence of one or

more factors upon a condition, group, or situation, purpose, of which is to discover what will

be. Furthermore, it will aim to identify the effectiveness of the utilization of instrumental music

across genre to teaching and learning process in the grade 8 - Narra science class.

Principally, the usage of the aforementioned music will be tested in the topic acceleration

and work, having word problem solving. This experimental study will follow the single group

with pretest and posttest design. Further, the study will also consider the descriptive type of

research. According to Calderon and Gonzales (2005), this research reveals problems or abnormal

conditions so that remedial measures may be instituted. And so, description will be done through

describing the profile of the respondents in terms of sex, age and GPA in Science subject for the

second quarter.

Respondents and Sampling Method

This present study will consider the grade 8 Narra class during the school year 2017-2018.

The section is composed of students with below eighty (80) in average. Therefore, it can be

assessed that the following students are academically challenged. Because the class is composed

of the thirty-eight (38) total of students, the researcher will not use any sampling method. The table

I shows the respondents of the study

Table I
Respondents of the Study

Number of Respondents
Class Population Male Female Total

Utilization of Instrumental Music in Solving Word Problems in Science 8 10

The table showed the respondents of the study which is composed of the Narra grade 8

class. The group has thirty-eight students having twenty-two male and sixteen female. It implicates

that the group is dominated by the male respondents. Because the research will not use any

sampling method, it will consider the entire class as the total class size.

Proposed Intervention

The study will utilized instrumental music as part of intervening material. The said music

will serve as background music during experimental period. Thus, participants will have an

opportunity to listen during discussion and assessment period throughout the experimental process.

The instrumental genre that will be use are pop, jazz, R&B and soul rock, and religious music.

These will be randomly chosen by the researcher.

Instrument

The instruments to be used are the pretest and posttest word problem solving. Thus, these

are teacher-made tests that are composed of twenty-five (25) items multiple choice. These tests are

designed to be answered in one (1) hour. Questions are personally composed by the researcher to

suite to the needs and capacity of the respondents. The pretest word problem solving contains the

same questions with the posttest. However, to eliminate the possibility of memorizing the

questions, the selections for posttest will be shuffled as well as with the choices. Similarities will

be ensured to reduce other external influences while answering the test.

The instrument will also undergo first with readability test. These are Flesch and Kincaid

grade level and Flesch reading ease level. The first test is concern whether the test suits to the

grade level; however, the latter is concern whether the test parallels with reading capacity of the

projected participants. Soon after, it will be pretested to the Banaba class. After which the result

will undergo to Cronbach Alpha Reliability Coefficient. This is to identify if the test is reliable.
Utilization of Instrumental Music in Solving Word Problems in Science 8 11

Data Collection Procedure

The research procedure will be divided into three (4) phases. These are pre-experimental

phase, experimental phase, and post experimental phase and second post experimental phase. The

first phase is the pre-experimental phase which includes the initial investigation of the topic. This

will be executed to identify the background ability of the students in solving word problem.

Initial investigation will be done to identify the word problem solving in science. This will

be done by looking at the last school years report card and the recent GPA of the projected

participants. She will also ask the pertinent persons about their permanent records for further

perusal. After the participants and groups are identified, there will be a pretest about word problem

solving. The test is a teacher-made test will be validated and will undergo series of testing. This

will be composed of twenty-five (25) items multiple choice; thus, they will be advised to answer

the questions in one (1) hour.

The second phase of the research is the experimental phase. This part of the research will

be composed of exposure of respondents to the intervention. This will be executed through

respondents experience of instrumental music for two (2) weeks during Science class. In this

sense, every meeting during class even during assessment period, participants will hear

instrumental music as background. All genre mentioned will be played as part of the experimental

element. The researcher will take note all development of during this phase. Further, randomized

interview will be done to monitor the respondents progress.

The third phase is the posttest. This will be conducted after two (2) weeks or ten (10) days

of exposure to instrumental music. The content of the posttest is the same with the pretest however

all questions and choices are shuffled to avoid familiarity and to overcome memorization. Same

with the pretest, the test will be composed of twenty-five (25) items multiple choice. The

respondents will be advised to answer the questions in one (1) hour. All gathered data in both
Utilization of Instrumental Music in Solving Word Problems in Science 8 12

pretest and posttest will be taken confidential and will be not a basis for any classroom

performances.

The last phase is second posttest. The test will be conducted to measure whether there is

really learning that occurred. The respondents will be given the same posttest after the

experimental phase. They will be taking the test for one (1) hour also. This test will serve as

reference for the learning acquire while exposed to instrumental music.

Ethical Considerations

All procedure and protocols in conducting the study will be observed. Thus, relevant

documents in relation to the completion of the research will be complied. Firstly, communication

letter to the immediate superior will be sent. This is for the purpose of expressing the intent of

pursuing the study. Secondly, because there are parts of the instruments pretest and posttest,

which are not originally conceptualized by the researcher, letter of informing and asking

permission will be directed through email. Thirdly, for the face and content validation of the

instruments, readability tests Flesch and Kincaid grade level and Flesch reading ease level,

experts in the field of concern will be sought. Fifth, for the data like previous grade and recent

class standing, adviser of the projected participants will be communicated. All of these will be

done through leakages. Lastly, for the data that will be gathered, animosity will be secured.

Data Analysis

The collected data through testing will be analyzed and evaluated through the employment

of appropriate statistical tool. Computations will done through Statistical Package for Social

Sciences (SPSS). It is a statistical program aims to accurately calculate having a lesser human

intervention in any statistical computation. Specifically, mean, frequency and standard deviation

will be used in describing the profile of the respondents in terms of age, sex, section and GPA. To

reduce score differences, formula scoring of multiple choices is applied. Formula scoring is a
Utilization of Instrumental Music in Solving Word Problems in Science 8 13

procedure designed to reduce multiple-choice test score irregularities due to guessing of the

participants.

Furthermore, T-test will be utilized to test the significant difference of the variables. In

particular, sample test will be used to measure the differences for pretest and posttest reading

comprehension result of the group. Statistical analyses of data based from 0.05 level of

significance. According to Quiroz (2015) explained that statistical values with level of significance

less than or equal to 0.05 is considered significant but level of significance greater than 0.05 is

interpreted as not significant. This means failure which is implicitly describes the affirmation of

the null hypothesis.
