Algebra

the branch of mathematics that deals with general statements

ofrelations, utilizing letters and other symbols to represent spe
cific setsof numbers, values, vectors, etc., in the description of s
uch relations
Constant
not changing or varying; uniform; regular; invariable
Variable
capable of being varied or changed; alterable
Term
a word or group of words designating something, especially in a
particular field, as atom in physics, quietism in theology, adze in
carpentry, or district leader in politics.
Algebraic Expressions
a symbol or a combination of symbols used in algebra,
containing one or more numbers, variables, and arithmetic
operations:
Exponent
a person or thing that expounds, explains, or interprets
Base
the bottom support of anything; that on which a thing stands or
rests:
Numerical Coefficient
A numerical coefficient is defined as a fixed number that is
multiplied to a variable
Literal Coefficient
In mathematics, a coefficient is basically a multiplicative factor
in a term but in algebra, a literal coefficient is a multiplying
factor which contains one or product of more literal numbers in
an algebraic term.
Similar Terms
Geometry. (of figures) having the same shape; having
corresponding sides proportional and corresponding angles
equal: similar triangles. 3. Mathematics. (of two square
matrices) related by means of a similarity transformation.
Dissimilar Terms
The terms which do not have the same literal coefficients
raised to the same powers are called dissimilar or unlike terms.
Polynomials
an expression of more than two algebraic terms, especially the
sum of several terms that contain different powers of the same
variable(s).
Monomials
an algebraic expression consisting of one term
Binomials
a two-part name, especially the Latin name of a species of living
organism (consisting of the genus followed by the specific
epithet).
Trinomials
consisting of three terms of which the first is the name of the
genus, the second that of the species, and the third that of the
subspecies or variety.
Multinomials
another term for polynomial.
Degree of monomial
The degree of a monomial is defined as the sum of all the
exponents of the variables, including the implicit exponents of
1 for the variables which appear without exponent; e.g., in the
example of the previous section, the degree is .
Degree of polynomial
The degree of a polynomial is the highest degree of its
monomials with non-zero coefficients
Numerical Phrase
Numerical Expression Definition. ... When you look at a
problem with numbers, you are most likely looking at
a numerical expression. A numerical expression is a
mathematical sentence involving only numbers and one or
more operation symbols.
Mathematical Phrase
An algebraic expression is a mathematical phrase that can
contain ordinary numbers, variables (like x or y) and operators
(like add, subtract, multiply, and divide). Here are some algebraic
expressions: a + 1. a - b. 3x.
