Luis Gabriel Moreno: Eagle-Eyed Exemplar
This led the 16-year-old, 5-foot-10 Luis Gabriel Moreno into victory over his opponents. Gabby, as he
is fondly called, has already engraved his name in the history of Philippine sports after conquering the first
Olympic gold for the nation in the Mixed International Event of archery in the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic
Games. With Li Jiaman of China, he was able to give pride to the Filipino nation.
Moreno is considered a phenomenon in the field of sports. At a very young age, he started to show
his great love and passion for archery. At first, when he was still a kid, archery was very easy but when he
grew older, it started to be difficult. But, he never gave up on his goal the goal to be part of the Olympics
and win a medal. And so it was, he became one of the representatives of the country.
From then to now, Gabby focuses on two bulls-eyes: academics and archery. Bow and arrow are his
tools to shoot the desired target in archery, while dedication and passion are his tools in pursuing his culinary
career in academics. But in both fields, he always makes sure that he gives his will and determination to
succeed. Though its tough, he tries his best to be the best in both worlds by balancing his time and energy.
This he does with the support of his family, especially his grandfather, Kuya Germs, who serves as his
backbone to stand before the crowd and defeat all his rivals.
The history he made will remain forever. He will continue to inspire us, especially the youth that if we
dont focus on what we want, we will end up failing. And indeed, we can see in the eagle-like eyes of this
exemplar the doorway to his heart a heart that is full of dedication he will always bring out the his best
through his being eagle-eyed focusing on his targets and goals.
Indeed, by focusing on his targets, he has not only won over his opponents in archery but he has won
the hearts of the Filipino people.

wallops and floats. His strikes are unsinkable which make him a good and undisputed volleyball player of his

unselfishly shares to everyone.

EUSSAA 2014 Rumble

Solsona batters dominate diamond
The diamond is ours!
Thus exclaimed Romelyn Cabacungan of Solsona Batters as the team emerged as the
champion, 9-6, in the softball rubber match with Marcos Catchers during the nerve-wrecking East
Unit Secondary Schools Athletic Association (EUSSAA) Meet unwrapped at Banna Sports Complex,
October 20.
Right from the two crucial innings, bomb-threat Cabacungan rigorously blazed the diamond with her
unexpected homerun. Reygine Ganitano of the Batters, on the other hand, followed suit with her tricky bunt
plus her overspeed running to levitate Solsona into a 2-0 run in the first inning. The Catchers made a
relentless retaliation as they unleashed their top guns with the highly-powered tactics. The Catchers
countered with a barrage of scores, 4-2, second inning.
The red-hot Catchers sparked, set their deleterious weapons and finally stopped their bleeding with
their blinding maneuvers, 4-4, tied up. Wobbly Cabacungan, proving her wits once again, devised a
thunderous homerun coupled with devastating attacks of her crew, 9-4.
The raging Catchers rapidly bewildered Solsona in the fifth inning, when they found the weak spot of
their rivals. But in the end, the dead-end Catchers became erratic and set their repentance after the Batters
found its way to grab the prestigious crown, 9-6.
It was a tough fight, and we thought were not going to make it especially because they are the last
batters. But thanks God, the diamond is again ours! coach Mr. Joemark Colobong commented.

Triangular Meet 2014

Warriors retain supremacy
Dynasty continues!
Fast and ferocious Warriors of Maananteng Campus dominated the crucial war of the sports
icons and pocketed the final ticket to victory in the thrilling Triangular Meet of Solsona National
High School held at the Solsona Public Plaza, September 26-27.
Sweltering their high-octane attacks and fault-proof strategies, the Warriors valorously bombarded their
defenseless rivals in sepak takraw men and women, taekwondo men and women, lawn tennis men and
women, volleyball women, basketball men, table tennis men, soccer, swimming women, arnis women,
which made them clutch 42 instant golds.
Full-packed Movers of Bagbag Campus owned the second place by releasing their sharp spurs and
deadly tactics and by playing like angry fighting cocks coupled with the fatal moves snapping 37 golds in
athlethics, baseball, softball, badminton women, and swimming men.
On the other hand, undefeatable and frustrating assaults being unloaded by the well-oiled Strikers
of Talugtog Campus made them reign in volleyball men, badminton men, basketball women, and arnis
men. As a result, stalwart Strikers hacked 23 golds and finished the brutal fight as the third placer.
We are very happy that we retained the crown. The victory would not have been possible if not for
the combined efforts of the teachers, parents, and most importantly, the students, said Mr. Gregorio
Dumlao, head teacher-in-charge of Maananteng Campus.

In the Penetrating Volleyball War

Solsona Spikers trample Nueva Era Netters, 3-0
BANNA Throwing a sudden burst of attacks, the top dog John Paul Espiritu introduced himself as
he unleashed his compact assault rifles and bullied the wobbly Nueva Era Netters with his optimum
kills putting Solsona Spikers into a stunning victory, 3-0, in the action-packed Volleyball Men
Championship Game launched at Banna Sports Complex, October 17.
From the opening tip, heavy-handed Espiritu immediately gained leverage by exploding six bullet kills
followed by three capitalized wallops plus John Tyler Manejas five armored placings putting their rivals out
of position. The shaky Netters tried to deny the cannon balls of the Spikers with their rock-solid blocks but
the methodical Espiritu found a crack and ended the first and second sets with a strong finish, 25-16 and 25-
11.
Fire-powered Netters broke their silence and set their deadly retaliation pulling their rare maneuvers and
their bolt-action kills, putting the Spikers out of breath, 22-22 deadlock.
The unstoppable Spikers continued their vicious invasion through their well-known fatal spikes and
finishing touches until the Netters finally dropped their guns, 25-22 victory.
The training we had is a no-nonsense. Thats why, we had the discipline. And that made us win.
Thats why we thank God and our coach so much, the overwhelmed Espiritu said.

Solsona dominates sepak takraw

BANNA - Pulling off her undying prowess, the air-forced Rowena Agngarayngay touched the bullet
as she unloaded her mechanized bicycle kicks coupled with her tremendous cartwheels to banner
Solsona into a staggering victory, 2-1, against the bullied Banna in the full-packed Sepak Takraw
Women Championship during the East Unit Secondary Schools Athletic Association (EUSSAA) Meet
fired off at Banna Sports Complex, October 17.
Right from the opening salvo, full-forced Agngarayngay hastily landed her streamlined attacks, kill-ing
Bannas disposition in fielding Solsonas assaults and services; thus, Solsona clutched the first touch-down,
15-12.
Momentum swung to the other side, after the pressured Banna strode for the balls delivering their
blooming strategies and momentum killers, owning the set, 15-13.
In the crucial decision set, both crews traded all their might and gut that cast a spell of silence, awe
and cheer to the crowd, 23-23 bottleneck.
Weaving the balls with superb wit and undeniable excellence, power-packed Agngarayngay retaliat-
ed and fired deadly attacks, fatally slugging Banna, 15-10 victory.
Their spirit is unexpected in the last set, commented coach Ms. Irenetina Abes, Their teamwork,
and their faith are their miracles, she added.
Strikers stun Movers
SOLSONA Bombarding a heavy artillery, the all-around ally Janica Francisco of Talugtog Strikers
stepped out of the shadows as she ruthlessly unloaded nuclear attacks and high-caliber defense to
elude her team on the verge of defeat, 40-26, against the dried Bagbag Movers in the hard-hitting
Basketball Women Championship Game during the jam-packed Triangular Meet held at the Solsona
Public Plaza, September 26.
Watched by the record-breaking crowd, Francisco created stupefying shots plus blistering cross-court
passes to carry her team into a dazzling 8-0 run. Movers found a spot setting their sophisticated weaponry
to shift the momentum on their side. But the sniper-eyed Strikers responded making a tally of 20-16 on the
first half.
In the brand new quarter, Mikee Barangay of Strikers opened the game with a hot start by rapidly
launching explosive picks and rolls followed by Mylene Valdezs tactical hook shots putting Movers out of
fuel. But the methodical Movers retaliated and continued their invasion trimming the deficit into a 32-28.
In the final stretch, the glassy-eyed Movers were unable to handle the bolt-action chemistry action of
Strikers after Francisco was in the shooting mode and closed the match giving the lasting impression into
the mind of spectators, 40-26, victory.
I am indeed very happy that finally, our efforts have paid off! exclaimed coach Ms. Chianaron Rafael
of the burning Strikers.
Sports Editorial
Of Prowess and Persistence
The young Filipino archer Luis Gabriel Moreno overwhelmed the country when he, together with Li
Jiaman of China, finally captured the ever-elusive Olympic gold for the Philippines during the Nanjing Youth
Olympics.
It was a great feat that nearly did not materialize. Moreno almost lost the game when he left the
Fangshan Archery Field with his family to have lunch after the morning session. When they arrived in the
venue at around 2:30 in the afternoon, it was almost time for him to shoot. That meant he did not have time
for warm-up, but he proceeded toward his target: to win.
And he did. Despite the hindrance he faced, with his prowess and persistence, he was able to bring
pride to our country.
Many of our Filipino youth have unequalled talents and skills just like Moreno. It is undeniable that
they have the prowess. However, some of these high-skilled Filipino athletes lack persistence. Some allow
themselves to have broken or bent arrows toward their targets. Part of the shaky determination perhaps is
the lack of support from the government. In fact, the Philippines lack sports training centers and equipment
which can be used free for the development of sports skills.
If only the youth will focus well, they can achieve more in sports. And if only the government will
support well, then we shall be able to build more Morenos.

Sports Caravan
Success, determination and faith
Many tales of successful persons are already told, but not all those stories talk about how those
persons win but also how they stand up after stumbling on lifes hindrances. What do these stories tell us
about success or failure? Its a matter of choice.
Success it comes very rare to you. Thus, you need to be watchful and determined. Likewise, in sports,
if you want to capture the glory of the gold, you must consider every game as your final game in your life. This
means exerting extra strength and determination in every game you are in.
Every sport event requires 5s: speed, strength, stamina, skills and spirit, but without determination,
these deadly attributes will just stay idle inside you. In achieving success, determination is very essential,
because it will be the one to power up the undiscovered talents in you.
Some sportsmen have been playing for years, using every drop of determination they could gather.
But as they travel the road of success, many of them have realized that determination isnt enough to achieve
success.
At one point in your life, like any other sportsmen, you may have felt your stamina going down, your
combative stance at the lowest. That is the time when you feel that the gods are conspiring against you. That
exact moment is the time when your fear, slowly growing inside you, is eating up your determination, which
may even contribute to your loss in the game, and loss in your self-esteem. Thus, when you feel like your
hands are static in the middle of the match, the best way to clear those cobwebs is faith. Faith is a powerful
weapon to survive.
Indeed, success can be conquered. And it cannot be determined, nor can be measured, by the
number of gold that an athlete has gained. Actually, its not a matter of how many gold you take. Its on how
you stand up strong when you are knocked down, not only in sports but also in the biggest game called life.
