DC Cable Sizing Calculator

The size of DC cabling you use with your solar panel array or wind turbine system is very
important. If cable of too thin a diameter is used, this can lead to heating of the wire. At
best, this can seriously impact efficiency through wasted energy and at worst, it can
cause a fire and other damage to your system.

Our DC cable sizing tool will help ensure you select the right cable for your application.
Please choose the voltage of your system, the number of amps and the length of cable
required.

Cable size recommendations (mm2)

Select the voltage of your system:
Number of Amps: A
12 Volt DC Length of cable required:
24 Volt DC m
48 Volt DC
System voltage 48 V
Amps entered: 5A
Length entered: 25 m
The cable cross-section should be at least 2.2875 mm2.*
Maximum Fuse Size Recommendation
Cable Max Fuse /
Size Breaker Size
6mm 25amps
16mm 70amps
25mm 90amps
32mm 110amps
50mm 150amps

* Information above is based on your inputs and is a a guide as to the size cabling
required. You can select from a large range of cabling here, or consult an
GreenerEnergy.ca expert for more detailed information. We also offer cable and wire size
conversion charts below.

It's amazing how crucial correct wire sizing is in a wind turbine or solar power system! If
your cable is too thin, it can severely impact the performance and even be a safety
issue!

Buy discount cable and wiring online or try our DC cable sizing calculator!
Using wire that is of insufficient diameter between your solar panels and solar regulator
can cause excess heat generation. This is not only wasted electricity (also known as line
loss), but is a fire hazard. Undersized cable used between the deep cycle battery and
your appliances can cause symptoms such as lights dimming and unexpected equipment
shutdowns.

It's incredibly important not to skimp on your wiring in your solar energy system. If you
buy undersized or poor quality wiring, you'll likely be replacing it very soon; so cheap
wire can actually cost you more in the long run.

Calculating wiring size

If you're not sure what wire size you need, try our DC cable sizing calculator - based on
your input of how many amps will be running over what distance, the calculator will
provide you with a guide in mm2, which is a cross-sectional measurement and the sizing
we use for cabling available in our online store. Note that this is a very different
measurement to standard millimetre diameter. If you need to convert from that standard
to another standard such as AWG, inch or millimetre diameter, you can use the
conversion chart below.
