Levitt was born on August 31, 1913 in Brooklyn


She started photography at the age of 18
Levitt dropped out of school
Started working for a commercial photographer
Her influences for street photography came from Ben Shahn
HER WORK

Street Photographer and filmmaker


She captures photos of everyday life in New York City
Focuses on the community street life
Activities of women, children, and animal
Underprivileged areas
1950s Levitt started taking color photos
Her films were The Quiet One and In the Street
METHODS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

"I had attached to my camera I had a little device that fit on the Leica camera that they called
a winkelsucher, which meant that you could look one way and take the picture the other
The device also meant You could turn your camera sideways."
1939: Levitts photos began to appear in magazines
1943: Her first show was called Photographs of Children
1997: She received ICPs Master of Photography Infinity Award
