Journal title : Awareness, attitude and practice of contraception among

antenatal women in a tertiary care hospital-a cross sectional study

Journal type : Scientific Report

P (POPULATION or PATIENT or PROBLEM)

200 antenatal women attending outpatient department of obstetrics and gynecology
were randomly selected and were interviewed with predesigned questionnaire after
getting an informed verbal consent. The only exclusion criterion was denial of
consent.

I (INTERVENTION or INDICATOR or INDEX TEST or exposure of INTERST)

Every subject in this study which selected randomly from 200 antenatal women
attending outpatient department of obstetric and gynecology were interviewed with
predesign questioner . The questionnaire was based on two sets of variables (socio
economics and demographic conditions and Awareness, knowledge and practice of
family planning methods)

C (COMPARISON)
There is no comparison in this study.

O (OUTCOME of interest)
This study shows that the high contraceptive awareness and educational level did not
reflect on the contraceptive usage level in this study. Hence, aggressive target
oriented information dissemination is required to motivate the women for
contraceptive usage and eradication of myths involving the risks of using
contraception.
Is the results of research VALID ?

The result of this study cannot be said as valid, because there is no randomization in
sampling so it can not be representative of the intended research population. The
inclusion criteria for being a research sample are also not clearly stated. The design in
this study is appropriate, which using cross sectional method that is able to examine
many variables at once, and calculating the prevalence number which is the number
that describe number of cases in a certain period.

Is the results of research IMPORTANT ?

This study provide information that the high awareness of contraception and the level
of education doesnt reflect the level of contraceptive use. The study also shows that
the antepartum period is the most effective period in which women will be more
perceptive to contraception advice.
Statistical analysis of this study didnt correlating between the variables so that, only
the percentage of each variable and no p-value was obtained. And also, there is no
confidence interval value. Because of that, it cant be determined whether the research
results are meaningful or not.

Is the results of research APPLICABLE ?

This study cant be applied to the population because it can not determined whether
the research is meaningful or not. But, the result of this study can be used as a source
of information for further research.

Critical appraisal conclusion

- Level of evidence : IV
- Recommendation :
Randomization should be done at the sampling in order to represent the
desired target population.
We recommend to test the correlation between variables using
statistical applications to determine the value of p-value so it can be
known that the result of study is meaningful or not.
Inclusion criteria should be included.
