3.3 The student will study the exploration of the
Americas by
a) Describing the accomplishments of Christopher
Columbus, Juan Ponce de Leon, Jacques Cartier,
and Christopher Newport.
After the students have collaborated on the iPad,
the teacher will then have all of the students return
to their assigned desk. On the teachers iPad, the
teacher will demonstrate how to work the app, My
Newspaper. He/She will explain where to type and
how to operate the application. The teacher will
then allow the students to get back into their
groups. As a group, the students will have the
control to decide whether to appoint a group
member to do all of the typing of the newspaper
article, or to pass one of the iPads around to give
every group member a chance. While one person
has the Newspaper app on his or her iPad, the rest
will have the brainstorming ideas up on theirs.
Most children will choose the second option,
therefore, they will have to split up work and

The students will have spent the last few days
learning about the explorers.
The teacher will start class by having students sit
down at their desk. The teacher will then pass out
an iPad to each student. A random group maker
used on the smart board will then put the students
into groups of 5. The group will get together in
separate parts of the room. Each student, on his or
her iPad, will open the Educreations Interactive
Whiteboard app. On the app, each group will
create their own board only accessible by the
students in the group. Together, the students will
be creating a fictional newspaper article about the
arrival and accomplishments of one of the
explorers previously mentioned. These will be
assigned by the teacher. Before creating the

decide how much each member gets to type.
Together, the group will create their fictional
newspaper article about their assigned explorer
using their ideas from the Educreations
Whiteboard. The group will also have to choose a
picture within the app that represents their article.
When the group is finished talking about and
creating their newspaper, the member with the
iPad will bring it to the teacher. After the teacher
has all of the groups iPads, he/she will have each
group present by connecting each iPad to the
connector for the smart board. The iPad screen will
show up on the smart board, allowing the students
to present and read their newspaper article.

and write, or draw, their ideas. The teacher also
has access to all of the digital rooms and can
correct any problems or answer any questions the
students may have while working in their groups.
This collaboration allows students to work
together, but also maintain responsibility as a
group. At the end, they will all be able to look at
everyones ideas on the iPad.
