Fractions (converting fractions into

Lesson unit/page division and solving division word Student teacher Khadija Mohammed
problems).
MST/MCT Nina Thomas School Al Asalah (Girls)

Class Date
5 E/F 31st October 2017

Overall aim and context of the lesson:

The aim of this lesson was to ensure that students are capable solving division word problems and identifying that
fraction and division are the same. Therefore, all students with different learning levels learnt and applied this
concept because this lesson only focused on how to solve simple division word problems since they didnt spend
enough time learning this topic. Therefore, students easily identified that fractions and divisions are the same
because they learnt that concept in their previous lesson.

Choose two aspects from the competency areas to evaluate and discuss (one paragraph each) according to
following

Firstly, discuss one aspect that YOU feel you did very well. Try to analyze why you think it worked well and
what hints you would share with other teachers about the successful strategy/ resource/activity/management
style etc.

Secondly, elaborate on the aspect identified by YOU that requires attention. Discuss what the problem was,
why it occurred and what action you intend to take to be more successful in the next lesson.

Planning for learning was the most aspect I think that I have succeeded with. This is because, I have
created a fantasy story for the students under the topic Mickeys Birthday Party. This story illustrates how to solve
division word problems. Students were highly engaged and excited about reading and solving the word problems
within the story since it contains a variety of Disney characters. In addition, I added an attractive and creative song
in order to teach students how to convert fractions into division. Students loved the song, as they were asking me
to repeat the song for them again. Thus, Total Physical Response was the teaching strategy applied within the song
in order to ensure that students remember the information by the song and its moves. To elaborate, this song was
the source of the lesson success because I noticed that when students were struggling they were singing the song
and doing its moves in order to retain the information. Finally, my MST informed the other teachers about this
song and how successful it was when the students sang and applied the information in it. Teachers asked me to
sing and do the moves for them in order for them to apply it with their classroom.
In my opinion, I would share with other teachers that adding fun and creative activities within the lesson engages
as well as attract the students. Also, creating songs that links and fits into the main topic would ensure the students
success. This is because, I believe that students learn best by doing and enjoy what they are doing instead of being
taught in a traditional way.
Whereas, Monitoring and assessment is the aspect that requires attention and improvements. This is
because, I noticed that within every lesson I teach I ask questions in order to assess students knowledge. I dont
think that having the same type of assessment would succeed every time because students need to be challenged in
order to improve and move a step higher in their thinking levels.
However, in the second lesson that I taught I changed the assessment by making the students come to the
board and solve some division word problems on the board. Therefore, I made the students model and share loudly
what they are doing and how they are solving the given word problem.
Personal focus for next lesson:

In my future lesson, I will ensure that I verify between my assessments in order to ensure that students are
challenged towards a higher level of thinking.
